The first podcast I watch was with Dr. Ede. I then began my journey with nutritional ketosis.  I started nutritional ketosis at the end of November last year.  I felt very well initially, best of all the lack of hunger impressed me. However, the past few months have been struggling. Meaning I am not losing weight, I actually feel that I am gaining fat. And then I watched your podcast with Kieffer, he is great by the way, so much knowledge. Kieffer is a star. I read Carb night . My CN journey began three weeks ago and I am enjoying food I have not eaten for years. I am not sure if  it is working for me. I have been trying to pay attention to my protein intake. Also trying to change exercise routine into weight lifting, but it is hard without mentor. So, Carol, thank you for inspiring me, you seem so jolly , lovely and a good person. Angela Neale:  So far this year I've been working to be fat adapted. I don't pee on pieces of paper (keto sticks) or check my blood ketone levels or anything like that, I've just been concerned with eating nutritious foods and eating pretty low carb/high fat. I've been doing well with that as far as my energy levels are and my performance while working out, and genereal well being throughout the day go. My issue is that I'm maintaining my weight/body fat and I would like to be losing inches and body fat.  Not excited about using low-nutrient/processed foods: Would starchy carbs (real foods that only need to be cooked to processed) work?

AJ had already addressed Angela’s questions in earlier conversation.  She can’t give specific advice without knowing more about Angela but she always suggests that folks do Carb Nite properly before moving on to Carb Backloading or giving up on Carb Nite.

Susan Hall:  I am a listener of the show from the beginning! It is great, both funny and inspiring. What I like most is that it is about real people who struggle with some of the same issues I have. I listen to all the podcasts with the experts, but this one seems so real to me.

I have been on a long journey of trying to lose weight, but most of all, get healthy. I hit rock bottom in August of 2012 and since then have lost just about 70 lbs. I still have a very long road ahead of me, but in that time I have learned so much about how to take care of myself and the proper way to eat. I found the Paleo/Primal way of eating at my lowest moment and haven't looked back. Although I still have setbacks, I feel I have gained the knowledge to fight through them and stay true to what I believe is the correct way to eat for me.

I am also writing you to turn you on to an eye opening documentary that I watched recently. It is called Cereal Killers. I am not very good at giving summaries so here is the website:http://www.cerealkillersmovie.com/cereal-killers-movie. There is also a facebook page for it. I love, love, love this movie. It is not on Netflix or Amazon so you would have to rent it from the website. It is 4.99, but so worth it. I actually bought it so I can show it to my family members when they are open to it. Anyway, check it out if you get the chance.

Sandy Drummond from Facebook and Fitbit Group: Just listened to the latest episode with Kefir. Ahahha more confusion lol You are struggling with that last 10 lbs correct? Have you ever heard of JJ Virgin? She talks about how if you are sensitive to a food your weight could be from the inflammation these foods cause.   It's a tough diet to follow. I fell off the wagon when I was training for a half marathon while on the diet and felt was losing too much ( can't believe those words are coming from my mouth).  You eliminate gluten, eggs, dairy, soy, corn, peanuts and sugar/sweeteners. Think this could be your issue?

James R. Sanders, MFP:  Carol!!! I found your podcast through FRN and finally got caught up! I'm a gun guy, a machinist, a musician, a foody and a beer lover. I'm 29 and my fitness and nutrition is more or less maintenance at this point. I'm 5foot9 and when I was 18 I weighed 120lbs, I was tiny!! It took about 7 years to hit 150lbs and considered myself in great shape. 2 years ago I hit 170lbs and had to change something to prevent the 30 year old landslide. My journey is the opposite of most of your listeners but gaining weight, healthy weight, is a struggle all the same. I love the show, good info and interesting ideas! I'm not sure if I'll keep up with this MFP thing, but we'll see!!!

Donna writes; I’m not 100% crazy about this podcast but I’ll try a couple more before deciding about subscribing. Seems to be a lot of personal opinion and chatter rather than facts and helpful info.

LOL Do you know if it's possible to set MFP to only record your exercise (and not dock you 2000 calories for not entering food?) I know on a podcast you said Zeke (maybe?) was only recording exercise? I only ask because I'm doing this crazy elimination diet and not super interested in logging my food all the time (I'm writing it in my day planner, along with other key items I'm self examining). I really look forward to seeing how the Calorie Myth method of working out goes! Thanks again for all your awesomeness, encouragement and keeping us all accountable in staying with the podcast. TOPIC:  Lisa Jarmon's Story:  

In November of 2009, I found myself at 262 lbs.  Somehow I had allowed myself to get closer to 300 than 200 - sobering! I knew that with a family history of heart disease, I was headed for an early grave.  Starting with Weight Watchers and journeying through a number of plans and methods (some wiser than others), I’ve lost 94 lbs. and would like to lose an additional 20-30.  Since I was urged to set a goal for this year (Carol:), I am working hard at fine tuning it and figuring out what it will really take to get to my goal.

I’d like to share some of what I’ve learned, some of the best resources I’ve found, my biggest frustration about sharing my story, and what I’m most passionate about.

Samantha Sgruggs, RD gave us a great tip for Brussel Sprouts.  “You just gotta cook them right! Some people steam them or boil, which traps that Brassica gas. Saute = best.@Nutri2Fruition

Howdy, Carol! I really only have ONE goal for 2014 and that is to actively pursue kaizen - (Philosophy of improvement or change for the best.)   I just want to make small incremental changes to improve myself, and thus my life. But to be more specific:

1. Be a better dad and husband today than I was yesterday.

2. Tell my wife every day that I love her. (Sadly, I don't do that hardly enough. It's mostly the autopilot stuff - you know, before I leave or after I come home, before we go to bed at night, etc. I want to just surprise her with it every day.)

3. Continue to experiment and find out what works for me and what doesn't as far as diet and exercise go.

4. Focus on HEALTHY, rather than skinny.

5. Do some kind of mud run.

6. Get my family to Houston.

And that's it. Thank y'all so much for what you do. It makes more of a difference than you know.

Tip of the week:  Banana ripening Avocados:   If you buy hard, unripened avocados, try putting them in a bag with a ripe banana.  Check it 12 hours later and your avocado will probably be ripe and ready!

  1. Focus on satiety: During the big meals focus on eating to get full, not stuffed. You don’t need to be counting calories or analyzing the ingredients, just chill out and load your plate up with 80-90% meats and veggies – foods that will satisfy you – then leave a little room to have a treat or two. If your meal satisfies you, you’ll be much less likely to overeat.
  2. Know your trigger foods: acknowledge which foods might trigger a binge episode and eat something else instead.
  3. Plan to indulge, but not to the point of sickness: Plan to indulge and eat your favorite foods, but dedicate yourself to enjoying the process, not fearing what might happen. Plan to eat a cookie or two, savor them, then move on. Planning to indulge eliminates anxiety, reduces guilt, and allows for a balanced to eating and drinking.
  4. Separate your emotions from food: The holidays are stressful. Don’t use food to cope. In your plan, figure out what you’re going to do when something stresses you out. How about a relaxing walk? A spot o’ tea? A Will Ferrell movie? Whatever you do, don’t impulse-grab at a plate of cookies and shove them in your face. Not worth it.
  5. Relax and enjoy yourself: Be merry. Good vibes are contagious.

JAMMOR66:  I follow the podcast all the time. I started with the guys but you have taken it to the next level. I am walking, fight night (game exercising) and watching what I am eating. Hit a plateau between 224 and 229 but I am not giving up. I sing at my church and it feels so much easier down 30 lbs! The complements on my appearance help too! I hunt and try to get out shooting with friends and I am trying to work on them to do a mud walk/run of some type ASAP. Please keep it up and I also can't wait to see/hear Carol Gets a Gun.

Update from Jake:  I'm holding steady at 205...Only up 4 from my final 8 week weigh in. Tried some wheat products ie: pizza and felt TERRIBLE! Focusing on Meat, Veggies and Fruit.... maybe a little Taco Bell.  Drinking some diet pop again... Not buying cases though.  Making positive choices asking for "no bun" when eating out, choosing salads over other menu items. I really think dairy is a big no-no for me.... digestive consequences....

Update from Carol:  High Fat is working for me to suppress my appetite (finally - SOMETHING).  But I have to watch overall caloric intake because I mindlessly munch all day (even when not hungry).  So less activity and 3,000 calorie days put weight on me.  Not High Fat, I think.  I am having a lot of success right now with LOTS of non-starchy veggies and LOTS of Fat and some protein.  As long as I watch what I snack on.  Some of my Ketogenic journey is recorded below.  Your own blood work numbers are pretty cool to see.   .5-3.0 is supposed to be Nutritional Ketosis.  I was having too much protein and this is how my numbers came out when I dialed back the protein, kept healthy fats high and made sure I was getting a ton of non-starcy veggies:

COMMUNITY JUICE FAST started Sept 22nd!    How Juicing can fit into a quest for Ketosis?  We discuss cycling different protocols to keep things fresh.  I like a 5 day juice fast just to reset and start fresh.  For me, it isn’t about the 5 day juice fast.  It is about the time following the fast.  I have new taste buds!  After a fast it is much easier for me to avoid processed foods and make healthier choices.  It just works for me. (Next Community Juice Fast is Sept 22, 2013!  and don't forget to like our Facebook Juice page)

Also!  We are hearing that trying to stay in ketosis for an extended period of time may not be optimal.  For more on that, listen to a recent episode of Ask the Low Carb Experts by Jimmy Moore: Episode 45 - John Kiefer and Dr. Rocky Patel talk about glycogen stores, ketogenic diets..
