Feedback:

Roy wrote: I have a 2010 Toyota Tacoma SR5 that has 29” tires.  Is this okay for the Tahuya run or do I need 31s? I only ask because I’d need a lift and I don’t feel like doing all that extra stuff.  Also will this be more open off roading or close quarters squeezing through trees?

2012 Toyota Tacoma Rally Truck.jpg

Hey guys. I found your podcast about a year ago and have been listening to your past podcasts.  I finally have gotten caught up and have enjoyed every episode.

In episode 187 you were talking about Reecer Creek being paved and surprised about.  One of you questioned if the pavement was laid down before the fires or after. As a former Ellensburg resident (I now live on the east coast) I can say that the road going up the hill there have been paved for 30 years or more. I used to as a young kid take Boy Scout camping trips up Reecer Creek. Later I took my old Datsun 210 hatchback up Reecer Creek and over the pass to Wenatchee. Love the area there and miss it sometimes.

Now that I am on the east coast I am struggling to find good areas to go off-road. Any ideas on how to search areas? I know much of the tools you mention tend to focus on the west coast areas.

Any ideas are appreciated and keep up the good work on the podcast.

Going back to the wise food and added to much water to pack lol. I have definitely been there  before with my mountain house meal chili mac. I've had to correct the water level to my meals to almost 1/2cup less.

Question for the Washington Back Country route did you guys map out the hole route or download from another source.

Thanks Vincent

AS always please feel free to send us comments questions and we will get back to you quicker then the episode drops with your question! We love feedback

Feedback:

Hey Ben,
First off, I’ve been listening to the show for a year or so, but I haven't interacted with you guys before.  I love listening and always look forward to the new episodes dropping. I live in Bremerton Washington, so when I found out you guys were local to me, it really drew me in. I was wondering a few things.  I missed the last time you guys had a listener meet up in Tahuya because I was overseas for work. I was wondering if you guys were going to do another one soon? The other thing, I was wondering how you felt about opening your WABDR trip up to a few listeners.  I was hoping to do WABDR this year, but we had our first baby a few months ago and I am having a hard time convincing my wife to come with me. In the interest of not going alone, maybe a listener trip would be a fun trip. Thanks for providing great content!

31241580_1698478526886223_1918010370077753344_n.jpg

Welcome to the Off Road Podcast. I'm your host, Ben. Today we will be exploring the off road world-- whether you like crawling up rock ledges or enjoy exploring the backroads with your family. Stay with us to find out events in your area, off road news, and topics to interest every guy & girl who craves the outdoors as seen through the windshield. I am here with my co-hosts Steve and Aaron. How’s it going?

Anyone done anything exciting?

  • Ben - Went to Montana and did some exploring. Mostly ran across closed gates. The only open gate had 3 trees down on the opposite side. Did get some minor forest roads but nothing crazy. Snowed a lot. Ran across some wolf tracks. Overheated and discovered whoever last replaced rad fluid left air bubbles. Went back to grandmas and fixed that. Planning a trip with Mac to go over the Iron Horse trail to another spot off of I-90. Possibly scored a huge interview for the podcast stay tuned for that! And got a gopro for my birthday

  • Steve - Decided to go with a chev 5.3 and a 4L60E in the ranger. Going to start it all by taking a frame from work home. And the front half of a cab to start mocking up and building with. I was also in the rainy state for a work conference, guess what, really does rain all the time in Washington.

  • Aaron - Won another Olympus Off Road auction.  2 synthetic rope shackles rated to 40,000lbs each.  These are or the LMTV. Gearing up for a 4 day Nevada camping trip.

Is this the correct address to paypal money too? I just dig the fact your podcast was the first ever in her life she listened too! Let me know and I'll send it over. Thanks!” She went on to say, “My Mama and Papa emigrated from Germany to the States in the 60s to pursue their own business of welding, fabricating, blacksmithing, design. Back then, after your apprenticeship in Germany, you had to work under another company for a few years before you could start your own biz. Papa didn't want that so they moved overseas not knowing anyone or a lick of English. They lived in Chicago until they had their first daughter and then me. They moved to Central WI to build a house and live, and with that move came their truck, an old GMC with a Warn winch on it! Yes, as a kid, I witnessed that "red W" winch help build the house (built European style with all concrete, bricks, and steel trusses). That winch also pulled out dozens of cars from ditches and moved/pulled more trees down than I could ever recall. Little did I know that a few dozen years later Andy would work at Warn. I was able to find an old photo of that dilapidated truck with the winch on it - Andy wrote a blog post about it on Warn's page a few years back.”

Main Topic

Tonight we welcome Kavi, the globe trotting sex machine.

  • Ride

Make/model - Toyota Tacoma 4 door long bed.

Lift - Fox 2.O, Total Chaos upper control arms and custom rear leafs.

Tires - KO2s

Mods - Prinsu racks, Pelfreybilt winch mount and battery tray, CBI sliders, ARB lockers and snorkel. Rokblokz mudflaps. Custom interiors with heated mirrors and leather seats. Rear tire carrier and swing out. BAMF hidden light mount, rigid lighting. And a bunch of other stuff.

Planned mods - Flatbed camper

A - First rig Jeep YJ on 37 MTR’s, FW 44 and 9” rear.

- Current Rig Tacoma

B -What happened at the border crossing with our intro, the part that says “welcome to the firearms network”, blasted on the radio as the Austrian border patrol asked me if I had any weapons. I smiled, they made get out and gave the truck a full cavity check. As they held me against the wall. Thanks guys!

A - Most embarrassing moment, Ever, my big bad supper modded Jeep blew its engine as I was going up lions Back in Moab. I had to get towed by an almost stock Tacoma. This month, I flew my drone right into the only tree on top of a hill, in front of a bunch of motorcyclist.

S - Favorite type offroading, Globetrotting and Adventure Touring. Mixed terrain.

B - Favorite off-road tool. Quick tire deflator and my Max Axe

A - Any cool new off-road tools. Black Elf GPS receiver. (works with any GPS satellite from any country)

B - Any Cool Adventures to share. There I was. To many to talk about, but driving through the Alps or the Pyrenees, is top on my list. There also North Italy or West France…. yeah to many to list. Got snowed in during my visit to the Stelvio Pass. Almost went off a cliff in Spain. Drove through the Maginot line in France. Got to drive and camp next to old castles or forts. Every trip was a bucket list item.

A - Gas vs diesel. Gas, all the way. Diesel is in decline in Europe and around other parts of the world. Most cities won't be allowing diesel cars into city centers, and governments are raising taxes on diesel fuel. In france, the government has gone as far as to start looking for other types of work for people employed in that automotive sector. Some manufacturers will even stop producing diesel cars after 2022. Diesel is not exactly dead, but it's definitely on its way out. Gas station closing early, small towns and rural, areas, everything closes early, sometimes around 5. In the city, almost everything closes around 9. Had to wait overnight for stations to open in Italy and Switzerland.

S - What would you do differently on the truck? The ARE bed topper is Poorly made, it has terrible fit and finish and is my worst mod. Followed closely by the ARB compressor. It kept failing for different reasons. The BFG’s KO2s are the best tire i have ever used. Good at speeds and off road. Thread last a long time. Hate my rear bushings in the leafs, they squeak.

Country's. All of Europe, Morocco, Japan, Korea, US, parts of Canada. Mexico, Costa Rica Ireland.

B- Bucket lists. Drive or Ride through South America for 2 years is next on my overall list. I've finished a few others I already had. My lists had stuff like Kayak loch ness at night, or eat a Belgian waffle in Belgium. I'm a big history nerd, so a lot of items on my list are destinations of historical or cultural significance.

A - Any places you are fond of? Netherlands, Spain, France, Austria, Italy and Switzerland, oh Switzerland.

We went for a 4-day trip that had multiple issues. Left on Thursday to go to an Ohv park about 4 hours away. Found a flat on the Jeep when arrived. Followed by 4 more flats in the first 2 days. Also discovered a dead rear shock.  Blew a bead sliding down a trail after some rain that ended up destroying the tire to get back out of the trail and to camp. It rained most of Saturday turning the park to slop. All in all a great trip.
