Off Road Podcast Episode 211 - Interview with Scott Brady Part 1

Welcome to the Off Road Podcast. Today we will be exploring the off road world-- whether you like crawling up rock ledges or enjoy exploring the backroads with your family. Stay with us to find out events in your area, off road news, and topics to interest every guy & girl who craves the outdoors as seen through the windshield. I am your host Ben here with my co-hosts Jeremy, Aaron, Steve and our guest Scott. How’s everyone doing?

Anyone done anything exciting?

  • Ben - Preparing for snow camping while enjoying snowpocalypse 1 through 3.  Got to use my winch to recover a minivan, an F150 deep in a ditch, and a Scion XB toaster.

  • Jeremy - Should have been preparing for the podcast snow trip, but went wheeling during the snowpocalypse instead.

  • Aaron - Prepping for our podcast snow camping trip.  Pulled apart all of my recovery gear and put it back together.  Dropped out 3 bow shackles for 3 synthetic shackles. Can’t find some of my stuff since moving. Flew a nice drone and shot some footage for the 1st time.

  • Steve - Still working on Winch bumper, almost finished.  Just a bit more welding, a lot of grinding, and then some primer and raptor liner. Need to figure out how to make the best use of my Last US Bag Co. bags.

  • Scott - Spent some time with Nissan in Morocco.

I am your host Ben here with my co-hosts Aaron, Steve, and Jeremy. And our guest Lance and Branden How’s everyone doing?

Anyone done anything exciting?

  • Ben - went to Montana in the van.  Decided I’m buying a mig welder stay tuned for terrible welds. Just got pictures from my buddy that my bumper will be ready for paint

  • Jeremy - Went dirt biking to test out new boots.  Feet are still wet, but not as wet. Put the RTT back on the truck.  Got everything ready for the snow camping trip this weekend. Went up to the olympic mountains to look for snow.

  • Steve - Truck is back with the paint guy getting front fenders finished.  Picked up all the wood to do the bed box/ drawers. Would like to figure out how to use a drawer slide but the longest they make is 24 inches.  Not sure that will work. Found a coupon today for the HF 1.5 ton aluminum jack, so I used a visa gift card I got for xmas and picked it up. $63.59 with tax.  In store without coupon is $79.99. On Christmas day I pulled a guy out of a ditch. His buddies and him were up in the mountains with their all wheel drive Mercedes and Audis driving around in tennis shoes and sweatpants and shirts.  Completely unprepared. So after laughing at them, I chained up and pulled the guy out.

  • Aaron - Drove both my LMTV & Nissan in our lower field to see how “bad” traction is on soggy wet grass. Sighted in my .17hmr.  Bought a pair of uppers for the lowers I recently bought.

  • Lance -

  • Techniques

    • Airing down is a must, if you change elevation you may need to add or remove air to maintain a specific pressure.

    • Maintain momentum

    • When breaking trail, remember:

      • Breaking trail is hard on your vehicle, watch your temps

      • If going with a group take turns breaking trail

    • Don’t spin your tires

      • Digs down and melts snow.  Then it re-freezes and kills traction

  • Special Maintenance issues

    • Battery

    • Heater

    • Check your antifreeze levels with Prestone coolant tester

    • Check transmission fluid and gear oils

    • If you stop do the following:

      • If you get put and leave your vehicle running lower a window so you don't lock your keys inside. (What?)

      • Clear snow from tailpipe

      • Clear snow from your radiator to keep engine running cool

      • Clear snow from wheel wells, control arms and hubs

Anyone done anything exciting?

  • Ben - been busy walking around inviting people to the event

  • Jeremy - Taught my wife the basics of winching.  She has helped me do it before and knows a lot of the techniques and theory, but had never done all the steps by herself, so we winched off of her car (bonus: she figured out where her tow points were.) Purchased a 2007 K-mart Trail Machine 450EXC.  Haven’t decided on a name, but got it registered today, It is street legal. Turn signal kit coming in on Wednesday.

  • Steve - Ruined the hood on my Colorado, ordered a new hood, got the Colorado to into the garage to finally get it finished.  Hunting season is over, my boy and I both filled our deer tags, we were not able to find elk.
