Feedback

Hello, Listening to the last episode and you finished the torsion lift on your Ranger. I have a Ranger, but held off on the torsion lift as I read it strains the cv joints on the front axle shafts, and you need an alignment after. So far I've done a body lift and F150 rear springs, with an Explorer 8.8 axle. The 33s clear the rear no problem, but rub under minimal flex up front. What's your experience with the Ranger rubbing as you didn't mention the size of the Suburban wheels. Thank you for your time, Brandon from Spokane

Steve’s Reply:

Hello Brandon. The 1st question. CV shafts and alignment. Any time you change something on the front end that has to do with suspension and steering you should do an alignment. If you lift the front end to high you can indeed put the CV shafts at to great of an angle.  I have not measured mine, but they don't seem to be significantly more than what I started with. I am running 265/75/16's. I believe they are only about a 32" tall tire.  If I turn lock to lock they rub on the inside just a little. Hope that helps Steve.

Tech tip:

With today's computer programs a parts guy does not have the chance to really learn what is interchangeable other than what the computer says.  Even at the the dealer. So if doing a performance swap or upgrade be sure to do some research. Forums and clubs are a great place to gain such information.  Check their tech pages and other document posts for good tidbits of information. Remember to save part numbers for things that may be part of something else.

Just bought the AMC Eagle with a 258 v6 in it It is a 4 speed and is 4WD. Wanting to lift it and get MORE power out of it. It's just going to be a woods and trail truck. So a good leaf spring swap would be good too. Just looking to make alt woods buggy out of it I don't really care on cost right now so hit me with your best shot. This is a great show and like listening while driving down the road.  David C.

Check Engine Code MIL, ABS light, and other warning lights.  They are a symptom of what is wrong, they are not always what is wrong.  You have to find out what is causing the light, not just replace the sensor that turned on the light.

Fair warning this will be a long email and I don’t expect you to read it all on the air but you guys were really speaking my language this past episode.

First off, love listening to the show in the shop and as I drive a lot during the day for work.  Second, shame on you Aaron for taking your truck to a shop for a dirty MAF sensor! Just busting your chops. You’d think a shop working on a pretty well built rig would realize the owner probably knows better than to pay $500 for a MAF sensor!!!!

I’m a big Ford guy, having had a lifted Bronco II on 32’s, a ’96 Explorer Sport (31x10.50’s BFG A/T, spring swap, custom shackles, torsion twist), a 1997 F150 (265/75r16 Goodyear Duratrac’s, torsion twist again), and now an ’02 Explorer (4” lift, 265/75r16’s Duratrac’s, 3.73’s, limited slip, 4.6L). I feel your pain on those torsion keys for sure. Every time I’ve worked on a Ford, other than just simple regular maintenance, it’s been abundantly clear to me that “wow, no Ford engineer has ever actually worked on a vehicle, EVER!”.

I’m also a bit of a tire nerd. Steve, I assume your Ranger has the 8.8 rear axle which is actually a really good stock axle for a vehicle that size. Does that have 3.55’s or 3.73’s? Some of the FX4 models even had 4.10 gears. Does it have the factory limited slip? If it has 3.73 gears get the Duratrac in the 265/75r16 load range C, they will be perfect, I promise.  Whenever I buy new tires I actually build a spreadsheet with cost, tire weight, load rating, tread depth, etc.

I live in eastern Iowa so unfortunately we don’t get to do a ton of off-roading, my kids are getting a little older and my wife is definitely getting more involved in wanting to take overlanding trips and things like that. We went to the sand dunes in Michigan last year and my family loved it so we are headed back up there with the Explorer again at the end of May and in June sometime. The Explorer does really well on the sand.

I also understood exactly what you guys were talking about the backwards AR15 hammer spring. I recently did a series of videos on my YouTube channel on my custom AR build and my DIY cheap trigger upgrades and I did the exact same thing.

Yeah I like guns too, a lot. I’d encourage you guys to definitely check out my YouTube channel, Hawkeye Skunk Works. I do lots of gun and auto videos, several of the videos have been chronicling my Explorer build lately. I’m on Facebook under Hawkeye Skunk Works too, I have a closed group which if like a tech forum and I have a public page where I just post all the stuff I’ve been up to. I’m also on Twitter and Instagram, you guys actually follow me on Instagram so I’m sure you’ve seen my Explorer on there. I’ve also been filming the mild build I’m going on my wife’s WJ.

Anyway, I could keep going but maybe you guys would want to have me on as a guest host sometime to talk Fords or guns or anything 4x4 related, I like anything with a motor. I’d love to talk your ears off for a couple episodes!  I attached a few photos of the rigs, past and present.

Off Road Podcast Episode 139 - Warn Interview

Welcome to the Off Road Podcast. I'm your host, Ben. Today we will be exploring the off road world-- whether you like crawling up rock ledges or enjoy exploring the backroads with your family. Stay with us to find out events in your area, off road news, and topics to interest every guy & girl who craves the outdoors as seen through the windshield. I am here with my co-hosts Aaron, Steve, & Cameron. How are you guys doing tonight?

Anyone done anything exciting?

  • Aaron - #thestinkbug bash bar and skid plate are done.  All that’s left before the Gambler is wiring the lights!  Installed new winch line.  Replaced my Fairlead.  Cruise control works great! Went shooting with Ryan Cross of The Gun and Gear Review Podcast, he sunk my battleship. :(

  • Ben - Got a gun trust started and ordered a full size frame for my 1911 along with started working on a knife project. Waiting on weather to stay calm down long enough  to work on Jeep.

  • Steve - Finished the lift on my ranger. Stole the tires from my Suburban for the Ranger. And went shooting.

  • Cameron - Since we last talked: had the MSJ spring run at Hawk Pride in Tuscumbia AL, over 120 rigs in attendance. Rashed the stock rear driveshaft on the JK and put some fresh scratches on the gas tank skid- ordered Rough Country shaft and gas tank skid. I'm surprised at the quality of the USA made shaft. Also picked up a rock light kit new in the box from a club member and it exceeded expectations. And just arrived hours before recording, the new MS6 light switch kit. Want to take a moment and give a special shoutout to a fallen off road enthusiast and Midsouth Jeeps club president Andrew Land. He passed last Wednesday from heart complications and will be missed. Over 200 local Jeeps and off road rigs gathered in funeral procession and several convoys from the surrounding area.

  • Andy - JP mag dirt and drive followed up by EJS and been keeping up with Jeep Beach Daytona followed by heading off to Overland Expo West right after that.

Feedback

Hi guys, My name is Joseph Haley and I live down here in Oregon. I currently have a 1968 short bed Jeep Gladiator with the Buick 350 and four speed I got for free from a field, I also have a 1983 Jeep Wagoneer with the AMC 258 straight six with only 323,000 miles on the original engine. I also have a 2007 Jeep Grand Cherokee that has the v8, electronic limited slips front and rear, full skid plating and a lower low range in the transfer case. I just started listening and have a few feedback notes. I have a friend with a 2007 Toyota FJ Cruiser (oh well I guess we all can't drive Jeeps haha) and he does use it as his family vehicles, having gone to California and Washington a few times with his two kids and wife, great truck, they do look horrible in yellow though! On the International episode (which I very much enjoyed) the second design for the scout 80 is rumored to have been drawn on a napkin. I have also heard that the reason they rust so much is because the sheet metal supplier they purchased from sold metal that was stored indoors at a premium which International could not afford. I am working on the backlog of shows and have enjoyed them very much. I will send a picture of my Wagoneer in an adjoining email. Thanks guys, look forward to more episodes (an episode on military trucks would be awesome btw).

Feedback

Hey guys, I found the podcast two weeks ago, and have been listening in reverse, starting at 134 and working back to number 1. I really love what you guys are doing and this podcast has defiantly opened my eyes to a few thing I had never heard of (like spill kits). I myself am just getting into the off road world, I've grown up hunting and four-wheeling from one side of Utah to the other, but have never off roaded for the sake of off roading until a recent trip to the sand dunes. I am really trying to branch out and get into the off road world. I have been working on a 84 cj7, sitting on 33s with a 95 xj inline 6 swapped in (my soon to be fiancés rig) and my 2000 F-150 that is currently totally stock (the jeep seemed like a more capable rig so it got built first)

My question to you guys is: is it safe to raise the front end of my truck by turning up the screws on the torsion bars, then putting in a bastard pack in the rear to level the truck?

My plan is to start with new tires 33s or 35s (and gearing if necessary), then move to a suspension lift to hopefully find some wheel travel, then lockers, then everything else. but until I find the money to put in the lift, (I still have 3 more years in college) i need clearance to put bigger tires on and I'm hoping to achieve this by just turning up the torsion bar screws. is that a safe, viable option for a daily driver?

Thank you so much for putting on the podcast I really have enjoyed it.
-Morgan

Todd dropped us a link on an incredibly rare Scout.  Only 3 made but only 2 survived. The 1980 Hurst Shawnee Scout. He also got himself a new tow rope, a Bubba Rope.

Robert gave us an update on his Willys rig.  It now has a radiator. In his spare time he also built a front bumper for a Colorado.

From Kevin

On this weeks episode you guys asked what we thought of state vs private parks. I’m in the Dfw area in Texas and we have a state park about 45min to an hour from me that while it's a good park with trails and some rock climbing, it's not very well kept to entice people to wanna come back and bring more people. Cost is about $25 per vehicle per day.

The private park we visit is about a 3 hour drive from and is great. The do a membership program that goes back into the park. Adding lodging, bathrooms, showers, and most recently full RV hookups. Again mix of trails and rock crawling. Entrance prices vary on day to day and camping, but are on par with the state park. They also do clean up weekends where you wheel for free but help clear trails and pick up trash around the park.

Announcement!

As we mentioned last week, we’ve got a new sponsor.  You heard Jeep Joe on our show 3 weeks ago and again last week.  He works for a Jeep dealership in Minnesota and convinced his boss to sponsor our podcast with some of their advertising dollars.

Park Chrysler Jeep is the Wrangler destination in Minnesota.  They’re the only AEV dealer within 500 miles. Park not only sells Wranglers, they out fit and accessorize them tailored to your individual needs & wishes. Park’s service department has specialized technicians that would love to build your dream. Their parts department carries more inventory than any other dealer in the mid-west. Their customer experience managers have as much as 20 years of experience up fitting & accessorizing Wranglers. Park also hosts several off road customer events. Jeep isn’t just a passion for them, it’s a way of life. Should you not be close to their location in the Minneapolis suburbs, they can ship you parts or an entire vehicle. Don’t be bashful, give the guys that enjoy Jeeps as much as you do a call. It’s a Jeep thing and they understand. Also, mention that you’re a listener of the Off Road Podcast and get $250 off your next vehicle, whether it’s a Jeep or not.  It’s not a ton but that could be used for some upgrade parts.

Main Topic

The 19 hour snow camp trip

  • Left earlier than planned.  Only a 90 minute drive to the 1st road I plan to check out. (9am)

  • Split pants.

  • Didn’t have bungees for tire chains.

  • Hot high centered.

  • Remote controls (I have 2) for winch had dead batteries.

  • Winched forward only to sink in crusty snow.

  • Undid winch line, put wired winch controller into tongue box on trailer, prepared to make a break for it, in reverse.

  • Was able to back out with lots of momentum.  (1 hour lost)

  • When heading to next place on list I found a DOT guy who suggested FS46

  • Found a spot right away at Y in road but the site was trashed.  Broken pop up, Trashed tarp, broken table, general garbage.

  • Moved on to find tree across road.  Cut it out of the way with a chainsaw.

  • Dropped trailer in middle of road to be more efficient in looking for a new spot.

  • Forward momentum is slow so I decide to lower air pressure in the tires.

  • On the 1st tire, the ARB deflator won’t let go of the valve core  My son calls out, “Are we stuck again?”

  • Can’t find needle nose pliers to get it out.  Dig out spare valve core and thread it in with valve core tool.

  • Get moving again.  Road dead ends 2 miles up the road.  Reverse all the way back to trailer and hook up.  (30 minutes lost)

  • Drop trailer in thrashed camp site.  Have to back the trailer in and out several times uphill and around a corner.  Tranny gets hot and goes into limp mode.

  • Clear code (3 times) and let it cool down a bit.  Drop into 4 low.

  • Cross highway to check out another FS road.  Has a nice spot but there is a vehicle already parked there.  Snowshoers maybe?

  • Head back across highway take the other road at the Y.  Find a nice place about 3 miles up the road down another road 1 mile.  Head back for trailer,

  • On way to get trailer I find “better spot”  Driving into spot I get stuck.  High centered on the skid plates stuck.

  • Where did I leave that winch controller???  Shoot my big shovel is in the trailer also.

  • Was able to dig myself out some and use Maxtrax to get out the rest of the way. (20 min lost)

  • Hooked up to trailer and pulled it to camp.

  • Get to camp and start to set up. (3pm)

  • Cook dinner.  Starts to snow.  Somehow get text that a big storm is moving in. (5pm)

  • After dinner pre-load truck in case we have to bolt quickly.

  • Finish movie, 1 last bathroom break, & still snowing hard (9:30pm)

  • Can’t sleep because wrist hurts, son is having night terrors, and large amounts of snow is hitting tent from tree accumulation.

  • Make decision to get outta dodge. (midnight)

  • Leave camp. (1:15am)

  • Thankfully it is mostly down hill.  The ruts in the road are mostly filled with fresh snow.

  • Large branches and small trees are bowing over the road from the heavy weight of the snow.  I accelerate faster to punch through them.

  • Snow is splashing over the hood as if I a fording a river because of the build up from the center of the road.  It is packing into the wipers. Wipers and defrost can’t keep up.

  • Have to stop multiple times to clear the snow from the headlight and roof lights so that they can shine onto the roadway.  Also clear snow from wipers, cowl, and grille.

  • It is almost apocalyptic!

  • Near bottom of hill I shift into 4high in preparation to pull onto highway.  In my head I assumed the highway would have little to know snow and probably plowed.  Nope!

  • I don’t stop at the stop sign at the top of the little rise as I head out onto the highway.  The highway is covered in compact snow and ice.

  • Pull into 1st gas station I find to air up tires under their filling station canopy.

  • While Airing up the local sheriff tells me that they are expecting 8-12 more inches of snow that coming day. (1:45am)

  • Drive home slowly.

  • Get home, park in driveway half hanging over the sidewalk, and text family that I made it home. (4:15am)

Listener feedback and announcement

Ronald B wrote in:

I remember reading a review from a guy that tested a whole bunch of pressure gauges and found this one http://www.amazon.com/Accurate-Digital-Pressure-Trucks-Motorcycles/dp/B00HYD65LY to be very affordable and accurate. I bought 3. I believe the digital gauges are remarkably accurate, I believe their website is here http://www.rstec1.com or something. It also has a car escape tool as part of it as well...cool gadget.
