MAIN TOPIC:

A brief history of the AR-15

Direct Impingement Patent Issued in 1956

M14 - Adopted in 1957, issued 1959. Select fire but generally issued with an selector lock.  Intended to replace the M1 rifle, M2 carbine, BAR, and M3A1 (grease gun).

M15 - was the automatic rifle version of the M14.  Never went into production.

The Air Force never adopted the M14. The other branches did.

1954 - Armalite Division of the Fairchild Engine and Airplane Corporation was created.  George Sullivan, Pres. Charles Dorchester as plant manager, and Eugene Stoner as chief engineer.

1956 - Stoner began filing design patents for design features that were incorporated into the AR-10 and subsequent AR-15.

1957 - Stoner demonstrated AR-15 rifles at the Infantry School, Ft. Benning, GA. Days after the formal adoption of the M14. Ten rifles chambered in .222 Remington Special. Also at the demo were .224 Winchester lightweight military rifles.
