Pre-Trip service/inspection

  1. Check all fluid levels and qualities, is it time or close to time to service something?
  2. Check for fluid leaks
  3. Check tire condition, fix slow leaks or any other issues
  4. Check brakes
  5. Check belts and hoses
  6. Inspect roll cages and other items under constant stress, suspension attachment points

Post Trip service and inspection

  1. Clean mud, sand, salt, and other debris from vehicle. Coin op car wash
  2. Change oil?
  3. Clean change air filter
  4. Inspect for damage at stress areas.

Don’t forget your trailer

  1. Inspect for cracks, bends and other damage
  2. Pack wheel bearings
  3. Inspect service breaks
  4. Inspect wiring system and lights
  5. Inspect safety chains
  6. Inspect tires for weather cracks/dry rotting  and air pressure

Doing a brake job

  1. Always do both sides
  2. Always turn or replace rotors
  3. Lube the slide pins for disc brakes
  4. Use plenty of brake grease and shims where applicable
  5. When spreading calipers, undo the bleeder screw so you don’t damage ABS pump/system
  6. Bleed the brakes when done
  7. When doing rear brakes do one side at a time so you can see how they go together
  8. The right tool makes all the difference.
  9. Get a Torque wrench and always torque your lug nuts.

Thanks for the Overland episode guys, my daughter and I loved every minute of it. You guys made some excellent points so I will adjust accordingly. The spare tire carrier seems to be a no brainer now.

What I have to start.

The Truck has a Bilstein 5100 2.5 lift and five Cooper 265/70-17 AT3 tires on it right now, The Taco is a 4X4 equipped with Limited slip Diff, TRD Running boards, TRD cab roof rack, TRD skid plates. I own an extensive selection of camping backpacking kit, so the food prep and sleeping supplies have been accounted for. My bud is driving a PRO-4X Xterra, we have no passengers but that might change.

Options I’m not sure of.

Should I go for an ARB Diff locker or for a lightweight option, like the Undercover HWMS?

As far as the camper top, should I get a hard shell or soft shell like Bestop?

Snorkel, pros & cons?

Should I do dual or a larger deep cycle battery?

Should I opt for a plate or ARB style front bumper instead?

I’ve got a few thoughts on the overland episode. While I'm no expert, I do play one on internet forums. But seriously I've had a few occasions to speak to overlanders and it seems the theme is capable and reliable. Balanced mild builds seem to work the best. Inline with camping/backpacking mentality

The trd probably already has a rear electric locker so that's a plus so I'd leave the reliable drivetrain alone. I'd go simple budget boost just get a little more room, possibly go 1 size bigger on the tires. That way you could get a little more performance without regearing or overworking the brakes. Plus it would suck to get the kayaks off a truck on 40's. Next I'd get a winch, but I would get a receiver mount so I could move it front to rear as needed.

After that I would spend the money on upgraded battery, gps, topper and storage solutions for the bed. I'd also get some sort of lockable storage for the important stuff. Tuffy bed drawers would be perfect, a bed roll/sleeping bag could lay right on top with plenty of secure storage below. Like you guys said, a larger fuel tank would be nice along with arb tire plug kit and air source.

I'd also carry a big bore revolver. I know how much you love revolvers Greg but that's how roll. Great show as always!

Well its been a hard secret to keep, with rumors flying for the past few weeks. But the press release came out today so its official: Poison Spyder has been bought by Transamerican, the parent company of 4 Wheel Parts. As we're gearing up for King Of the Hammers, we know this news will be competing with anything we're doing on the race course, so we wanted to let you, our fans, customers, friends and distributors know what's going on and address some of your concerns.

First of all, I (Larry McRae), am not going anywhere. I'm staying on as President of Poison Spyder, the only difference is that Greg Adler's signature will be on my paycheck instead of my own. The same with our staff, everyone is staying put, in fact we'll be adding more. The team that got Poison Spyder to where it is today is what Transamerican was after, and they intend to keep it intact. We'll continue to do our own product development, sales, marketing, and of course traveling the country to events to meet and wheel with you guys. And very importantly, our products will continue to be built in the same Poison Spyder facilities in Banning, California.

So what IS going to change? The biggest thing is we'll now have access to Transamerican's considerable resources to fuel our growth, keep the shelves full and expand our product lines. And through their distribution channels we'll be able to bring Poison Spyder products to a larger market. But for the most part, Poison Spyder will continue to function mostly autonomously. Those of you who like buying direct from Poison Spyder will still be able to do so.

Over the coming week we're going to have our hands full out here at King Of the Hammers, so its not the most convenient time for this news to break. But we welcome your thoughts on this. I have a 2011 Jeep JK Unlimited, and have been looking at lifts for a long time.

I hear that some people piece their lifts together from different manufacturers.

Can I use springs from one, arms from another, track bar from another etc?

Also, have any recommendations. Been looking at the 3.5" rock Krawler X factor lift, but would be interested to hear what you recommend. Would like to run 37's with as little lift as possible.



Really enjoy the podcast. I have been wheeling for about 37 years now, started on Honda 3-wheelers back when I was 11 and have had dirt bikes, sand rails, Baja bugs, jeeps and trucks.

I currently have a 2012 Dodge Ram 3500 (my 4 Dodge Ram) and thought I would share my woeful warrantee experience with you since you both have recently gotten new Chrysler vehicles and are going to do work to them.

I purchased my 2012 Ram in January of 2013 and had the dealer install a 6” lift on it for me, not that I do any hard wheeling with it but being a Mega Cab with a long wheel base I wanted a little more ground clearance and to up the tires to 35’s.

In August of 2013 the transmission started leaking and I took it to my local Dodge dealer (not the one I bought it from) and was advised there was an air bubble in the casting of the case and they were advised by the factory to replace the case which they did, moving all the internals from one case to another.

In June of 2014 the transmission started leaking a little again and back to the local dealer it went. They advised me that the transmission had overheated at some point and it was fine so they returned it to me.

In August of 2014 it started leaking again pretty bad this time so back to the local dealer it went again with only 30,000 miles on it. This time the found another crack and requested the factory replace the whole transmission this time. Well after 1 week at the dealer and sending the factory photos and doing computer trouble shooting on it they think that a vibration in the transmission caused the case to crack but asked for some more photos. Well a week more and they come back with the answer that the truck has been lifted and therefore they are denying any warrantee claim. So the local dealer called me to advise me of the factories decision.

Now the dealer I was going to was not the one who sold me the truck or installed the lift kit, that dealer is 200 miles away. The reason I bought one from a dealer that far away is they were the only ones who had the Ram 3500 dually in stock for me to look at before I bought it.

So now I have taken the truck to the dealer I bought it from and waiting to hear back from them on what will be done to fix my truck. At the time of purchase I asked the salesmen if the installation of the lift kit would void my warrantee and he assured me it would not so I wait patiently for their answer to my problem.

While I understand that installing a lift kit will void some portion of a warrantee such as the suspension system and what not but don’t see how a cracked transmission case would be caused, and even if it could would they not have told me this the first time the case cracked even if to just tell me if it happens again they would not cover it. It seems that now that Fiat is involved with Chrysler things aren’t what they used to be.

Anyway just a heads up on how bad things are getting there.
