The Interview

Let's talk about you

How did you get started off-roading?
What was your first rig?
What type of wheeling do you like to do?
Most embarrassing moment on the trail?
Tell us about super jeep!

How did you go about preparing for the show?

did anything change before it started?

What was being on TV like?

What was your most used tool on on the trail

How bad did they play off the drama compared to whatever drama there was.

If you could do it again would you?

Are there any forums or facebook groups you frequent?

You recently had a popular video did your turkey taste a little bit like diff fluid?

What would you suggest to anyone looking to get into wheeling or who just got started?

Roberts question

hey carl i had a listener write in and ask a question maybe you could help answer this its a little beyond my know how Don't hate me but I'm gutting the leaf springs in the front. I did not want to look at the crowded front bumper anymore.

Can I fabricate a curved upper link on a 3 link? I understand it will be heavier and harder to adjust since it will have to stay vertical. I see track bars bent to clear oil pans all the time. I want to fab the upper arm, it will give me 4 inches of more compression. Well worth the time....if it can be done?

Your company

How did jantz engineering come about?
Do you have employees? How many?
Do you specialize in anything
What are some of the kits you sell
What's your company's mission statement and what do they provide for the 4x4 community?Where are you on social media and do you have a website

What's next for super jeep

Listener Feedback

CJ5 After.jpg

Israel wrote in that he recently found the podcast and was on episode 19 and he was working his way through catching up even though he was looking for our previous hosts i gladly helped him with what advice i could as it reads

I currently live in Parker, C0 (south of Denver). Bought a jeep two years ago and have enjoyed wrenching and making it reliable for weekend trips and “yes” hate to admit it, but sometimes my grocery getter.

Overview on my rig:

1983 CJ jeep

2 inch lift

33 /12.5 /15 inch BFG

AVM hubs

Inline 6 stock-

Pro Comp rear bumper

custom front bumper- two point recover hooks

front axle (dana 30 stock?) and rear axle (amc 20)

Now that I have driven it around town and taken a few small trips to the mountains, I really want to increase my range off road.  Yes, I’ve babied it but I’m sure all can relate to a new build.  Most trips have been on forest roads and muddy gravel roads. I’m not looking to get crazy or hit extreme trails but enough to get me to the next level without abusing my CJ. Yes, it’s a short wheelbase and may not be able to climb big boulders but I want my jeep to get over tree trunks or ditches with little effort.  Eventually, I want a newer jeep, TJ or JK but for now this is what I got.

So, I think I know the answers but I want your guys input.  If you’ve already discussed this, I guess I’ll listen to it shortly once I get caught up.

  1. Should I add selectable lockers in the front or rear?  ( I am only doing one locker because of budget. Wedding planned for 2017)

  2. Is it worth adding lockers to stock axles on my cj5?

  3. Do I spend money on a winch or lockers first?

  4. I also need to replace my clutch, flywheel and throwout bearing.  How hard is it?  I’ve taken my skid off to replace the transmission mount and stabilizer so I know there is some weight to it.  4 Wheel Parts would do it for about 600-800 bucks. The part is about $100-125. I really want to do it myself but if I get stumped on something I want to do it right or is it pretty straight forward? Clutch adjustment and torque specs for all the bolts, etc.  Any advice or a good shop around here would be greatly appreciated.

I responded

1) if you do a locker do the front first because its helps the tires grab and lift you over the obstacle vs pushing you into it

2) lockers never hurt in all honesty

3) personally I would go for a winch first because if lockers can't get you out a winch will may take longer for recovery

4) I would have another person who's done a clutch around in a cj they are fairly easy and can take a day for an experienced duo or longer depending tools like a transmission jack

Hi  I just started listening to your podcast and love it. I'm going to buy a jeep and want to do some trail riding but I don't have the time or garage to build a jeep do to being in the military. I just wanted know what you think about the rocky ridge jeep packages they put on the new jeeps I'm looking to buy one of those. Here's a link to one  http://www.sherry4x4.com/vehicle/2015-jeep-wrangler-unlimited-rubicon-rocky-ridge-k-2-27451t/#  If you could just let me what you think if it's worth it or not and if the suspension or parts they put on it  are good. Thanks for the help.

Main Topic: are your gears turning overs gears

Does your head feel like exploding because you went and lifted your rig and put larger tires on and now you feel like your rig doesn't get around like it used to or when you go to the hills you're over in the bike lane thinking about getting out and pushing your rig up the hill because  it would be faster. once you figure out that the taller tires changed your ratios you start research that you need to change your gears but then your head starts to hurt  again because you have no idea what gears to change too. well with a little bit of the universal language “math” you can figure out what ratio will work best for you if not better.

Basics of a differential

  1. gear ratios what are they and how do they work
  1. definition: the ratio of the rotational speeds of the first and final gears in a trainof gears or of any two meshing gears.
  1. How does a differential work
  1. http://auto.howstuffworks.com/differential.htm ,https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yYAw79386WI
  2. factory gear ratios are set to optimize your vehicle for factory size tires and factory power. the gearing in your factory differential allows optimum use of your engine's power whether that be used to go down the freeway and get optimum fuel milage or to tow a big load up hills and down the road without stressing your transmission and engine depending on what your vehicle was built for.
  3. high gear ratio example 3:08 low gear ratio example 4:56
  4. lower numbers equal higher ratios and higher numbers equal lower gears
  1. What affects gear ratios
  1. tire size: if you go up in tire size it means there's a larger ratio from gears to ground and smaller tires means you get a smaller ratio to the ground. when you go up in size it gives you higher gear ratios which is better for higher speeds but you lose power in the bottom end.
  2. changing a transmission or transfer case: shorter shifting transmissions will affect how fast your engine maxes out to the power from the engine. lower transfer cases do the same
  3. engine power: more power can mean you need less gear less power means you need more gears.
  1. gear math

I have an 06 Tacoma with 31” tires and a little body lift. Is that built enough to join a club and do some light crawling while I learn or should I wait until I have the money to build it more? I know you guys were on an old episode that club members don’t like people coming in with rigs that aren’t built enough.

I would say you’re truck is  built enough to join a club, you just have to realize that you are not going to be able to go on every run. Just make sure you don’t invite yourself on runs that are beyond your capabilities and your rigs capabilities.

  4. land anchor if using winch. also a snatch block
  5. momentum is your friend when towing someone out .
  6. Sand driving
  1. air pressure is king lower is better in the sand, don't go so low that you pull your tire off the bead or run beadlocks.
  2. know how to use your vehicle and its off road systems ie four wheel drive or lockers.
  1. know how your four wheel drive engages and weather it's gonna be better in low range or high.
  1. some low ranges are too low and don't allow enough tire speed.
  2. Tires and tire pressures
  3. wide knobby tires work great mud tires like swampers turned                  backwards can act like sand paddle
  4. sand paddles work great but cannot be used on the street also you need power to turn them
  5. safety concerns
  1. all vehicles in dunes should be flying a flag
  2. watch for other riders while coming over the peak of a dune no blind jumping
  3. if having to jack a vehicle up in the sand remember that sand is soft and moves really easily vehicle can crush you.
  4. when winching or towing stay far away out of the radius of lines. watch for snapping lines.
  5. always be on the lookout for other drivers or riders lots of inexperienced riders and drivers out there.
