The Interview

Let's talk about you

How did you get started off-roading?
What was your first rig?
What type of wheeling do you like to do?
Most embarrassing moment on the trail?
Tell us about super jeep!

How did you go about preparing for the show?

did anything change before it started?

What was being on TV like?

What was your most used tool on on the trail

How bad did they play off the drama compared to whatever drama there was.

If you could do it again would you?

Are there any forums or facebook groups you frequent?

You recently had a popular video did your turkey taste a little bit like diff fluid?

What would you suggest to anyone looking to get into wheeling or who just got started?

Roberts question

hey carl i had a listener write in and ask a question maybe you could help answer this its a little beyond my know how Don't hate me but I'm gutting the leaf springs in the front. I did not want to look at the crowded front bumper anymore.

Can I fabricate a curved upper link on a 3 link? I understand it will be heavier and harder to adjust since it will have to stay vertical. I see track bars bent to clear oil pans all the time. I want to fab the upper arm, it will give me 4 inches of more compression. Well worth the time....if it can be done?

Your company

How did jantz engineering come about?
Do you have employees? How many?
Do you specialize in anything
What are some of the kits you sell
What's your company's mission statement and what do they provide for the 4x4 community?Where are you on social media and do you have a website

What's next for super jeep

Sand Knowledge

  1. recovery skills
  1. know how to use your recovery equipment tow ropes tow hooks winch etc.
  2. make sure you have proper recovery tools.
  1. proper tow points front and rear of vehicle attached to frame
  2. proper tow strap nothing with hooks and rated for at least twice your  vehicle weight.
  3. winch movable from front to rear is best and mounted properly.
  4. land anchor if using winch. also a snatch block
  5. momentum is your friend when towing someone out .
  6. Sand driving
  1. air pressure is king lower is better in the sand, don't go so low that you pull your tire off the bead or run beadlocks.
  2. know how to use your vehicle and its off road systems ie four wheel drive or lockers.
  1. know how your four wheel drive engages and weather it's gonna be better in low range or high.
  1. some low ranges are too low and don't allow enough tire speed.
  2. Tires and tire pressures
  3. wide knobby tires work great mud tires like swampers turned                  backwards can act like sand paddle
  4. sand paddles work great but cannot be used on the street also you need power to turn them
  5. safety concerns
  1. all vehicles in dunes should be flying a flag
  2. watch for other riders while coming over the peak of a dune no blind jumping
  3. if having to jack a vehicle up in the sand remember that sand is soft and moves really easily vehicle can crush you.
  4. when winching or towing stay far away out of the radius of lines. watch for snapping lines.
  5. always be on the lookout for other drivers or riders lots of inexperienced riders and drivers out there.

Hey guys,

Came across your show a couple days ago and have since subscribed.  Well done you all.

I came into your overlanding discussions and was curious have you all ever talked about the off road trailer market? Overlanding is a huge market and worth the discussions.

Looking forward to future episodes.

Happy Wheeling

GGR 154 – EarthRoamer Off Road Adventures

I am brand new to off roading, mostly fire roads and mud.  I just purchased a Full size 1988 K5 blazer and was wanting to know what mods would you suggest for a new off roader on a budget.  350 Motor Auto transmission (400r?) No lift, as of yet.  Hoping to get some good advice from guys who have been there.

Thanks in Advance. -Dean

Greetings Guys

So glad Jeff is back, much better when you both are there.

So Greg, I have to say I still love the show, but every time you pimp the Alaska Off-road  Warriors I lose a little respect for you. That show is so cheesy and the white trash characters are so annoying. As you mentioned on show 26, the brothers are tweekers.  Butch in war wagon  is a drama queen, and completely ridiculous. Super Jeep is some kind of Frankenstein junk rig. I really think the show is making off-roaders look bad and the cast is just too obnoxious to watch.

I realize Off-roading needs any coverage we can get, but that show is just over the top dumb.

Just my 2 cents.  Other than that keep up the great show.

Clint

ORP 021 - Tires, Bias Ply or Radials?

Welcome to the Off Road Podcast!!  I am your host Greg Bakken and joining me is my co host Jeff Bakken...This is the podcast for all things offroad.  Whether you're looking for Sunday jaunts on some fire roads or hard core rock crawling, we will cover it all. Episode 21!!!

Hey guys

Got a question for Greg "deep pockets" Bakken. I went to my local dealership the other day and was a bit sticker shocked. It also made me wonder why you bought a Rubi since you hoped to replace everything by 10k? The price difference between an x and the rubi would pay for 60 up front. Hell if you got a 2wd you could almost get both axles and an atlas.

Not judging, unless you got power windows then I'm judging a little. When I got my 04 Rubi I knew it was going to be a light wheeler and daily driver and the 4.10's would work well with the planned 33's. So I was just curious why you went that way.

Thanks for the show, I know its a pain to get them out with full time jobs but we really appreciate the effort. Later, Matt

Main Topic: Tires, Bias Ply or Radial?

It's able to do all this because of the way it's constructed. You see, a tire isn't just a rubber balloon - it has a carcass made of plies (or layers) that give it shape, strength, and stability (otherwise when filled with air it would just expand in a wobbly and useless round fashion like a balloon tire in a kids picture). It has a steel bead to clamp it to the rim with sufficient friction to transmit acceleration and braking from the rim to the trail and vice versa. It has tread blocks to grip the road and trail, tread voids to shed mud, snow and water, and it can have cap-plies or steel belts under the tread to stabilize the tread and reduce punctures. The plies themselves are made of chords of fibrous material (polyester, fiberglass, nylon, rayon, steel mesh, kevlar, etc.) woven together and coated with rubber. It is the plies in a tire that give the tire shape and strength and prevent it from expanding like a balloon, thus allowing the build up of load supporting pressure.

ORP 008 - Listener Feedback, Tires, Broncos and More!!

Welcome to the Off Road Podcast!!  I am your host Greg Bakken and joining me is my co host, trailer queen Jeff Bakken...This is the podcast for all things offroad.  Whether you're looking for Sunday jaunts on some fire roads or hard core rock crawling, we will cover it all. What's up Jeff?

Listener Feedback:

Hey guys,

I wanted to start off by saying I love the podcast so far. I have a 2003 TJ. I'm fairly new to off-roading. I have been going on some runs with a great group in New Hampshire called Exploring NH. In fact this past weekend I participated in a stock/newbie run with my wife and daughter that was a lot of fun.

One question I had was about wheel width. How do you know how wide of a tire you can put on a wheel. I know the rims that I have on my TJ are the Canyon rims which are 15 x 8. The tires I have now are BFG's A/Ts and they are 30 x 9.5 x 15. Soon I will be putting on a lift kit and I am thinking about going to 33's or 32's. How do I know if I can go to 10.5" or 12.5" wide tires?

The other thing I wanted to comment on was some remarks about radios. I think the guy in the email you read was talking about FRS (Family Radio Service) radios. Those are the radios you usually see that come in a 2 pack and are kind of like walkie-talkies. They are short range and anyone with any brand FRS radio can communicate with someone on the same channel. No license is required. They don't have all the static and interference issues that CB radios have. They operate on UHF (Ultra High Frequency, 462 and 467 MHz) and have 14 channels. You can pick them up for fairly cheap. Citizen's Band (CB) radio operates at 27 MHz and has 40 channels. Power limits are a little higher than FRS so they have better range. They are the most common. Ham radio or amateur radio is the other more popular radios in use. They do require a license. There are three levels of licenses now and knowing Morse code is no longer a requirement. The higher the license level, the more frequency bands you are permitted to transmit on. You do have to have a call sign. Mine for example is KB1PYC. The most popular band is 2 meter. Besides computers and base stations, handheld and mobile units are available for usually 100 to 200 dollars. Cheaper Chinese radios are readily available on Amazon for much cheaper. The different bands have different power limits and range limits. There are 2 meter repeaters all over the country. Many of these repeaters are linked to the internet so you can communicate all over the world through the internet connection. Repeaters can be private or public use. The test for the license is very easy to study for. There are numerous study guides and websites that list all the questions in the question pool. So nothing will be a surprise. Some clubs will also conduct classes. One of you asked if RF meant repeater frequency. It's actually radio frequency which is anything between 3 kHz to 300 GHz. All of these systems operate in the RF band which is broken up into the different bands mentioned above.

Sorry this is so long. There is so much information for the 3 main radios used. Plus there are others like GMRS (general mobile radio service). Hopefully this is a good primer for you. Thanks again for doing the podcast. As a newbie I really appreciate all the tips and information.

Sincerely,

Jason

Hey guys, Love the podcast! I listen every week! Y’all give lots of great info! I have a 2005 F150 six inch Pro Comp lift with 37” tires and 456 gears and a 79 CJ5 304 with four inch lift and 35” tires. Keep up the great Job! I listen every week!

Hey Guys,

Digging the show. Jeff is great! Greg's ok too, when he can speak correctly...

How about doing an episode about full size rigs. I think these are very common and viable rigs in the Midwest and south.

Found this one locally on Craig's list. Do you think it's a viable option?

Actually, it might make a decent tow rig. That's another episode idea too. Budget tow rigs. I see 3/4 and 1 tons from the 80s and 90s that are great bargains. Under $5,000, low miles, good shape... Might not have all the creature comforts or pretty paint. But are a real bang for your buck and keep you out of a car payment. Yuck.

Keep up the great work!

Let me clarify some things up, the bronco is running a C-6 tranny and I have a Gear Vendors overdrive unit that I will be installing; also I live in Oklahoma. I would like to be able to do an intermediate to advanced trail (3-4 diamond rating) when offroad. Now with some more questions; I have considered a Cummins 4-bt, but it only has 104 HP stock. And that sounds like it wouldn't be adequate. I have Ford 429 that I could build, but I wasn't sure if that was the route I wanted to take. Now for the tire comment, I also have a 1976 Ford Bronco rock crawler. I have the same running gear setup in that bronco as in my 1979 except I'm running 40's on that bronco and I do well offroad with that why would the 37's be pushing it for my 1979?

Thanks again guys the show rocks keep it going.

-Garron
