Main Topic camping in the sand

what to camp in.

  1. tents.
  1. tents are cheap and easy to come by
  2. tents are lightweight and easy to pack
  3. tents don’t do so well in the wind
  4. tents are not very secure if your leaving gear at camp
  5. Truck beds or storage area
  6. there are lots of options for truck beds like air mattresses/truck tents
  7. camper shells are more secure option and fiberglas ones are good in the wind
  8. suv hatches are good but limited space for you and gear.
  9. if you're using your truck for sleeping you have to pack it up to travel to town
  10. Trailers
  11. Trailers have lots of space and bathrooms
  12. trailers can have cargo areas for wheeling rigs
  13. Trailers have comfortable beds
  14. Trailers are allot more secure for leaving gear if you have to leave camp

Things you need if you're camping with the equipment named above

  1. tent
  1. stakes to hold tnet down the ones in the bag won't hold it down
  2. wind barrier dig a berm or stake up tarps on prevailing wind side
  3. air mattress or cot sand is not as soft as you think to sleep on
  4. truck/suv
  5. air mattress
  6. things to clean up with wet naps things of that sort same as tent
  7. trailers
  8. wind barrier / trailers become venturies
  9. jack stands made for sand.

C water and supplies.

camping in the sand can be allot of fun but can also be allot of work depending on the weather and conditions.

towing in the sand is tricky but can be done lower air pressure on truck and trailer for better traction. tires on trailers that are aired up turn into anchors.

closing statements

be smart be courteous and be alert and as always have fun.

I think your head knows what you should do, put the FAM and the future first. How else do you think I ended up with a cr-v and not Grand Cherokee, or 4runner.  I you have mentioned this struggle on two episodes now.  I think you can host this show like a boss without this dream JK.  Also, a trailer queen sounds like a better option. More capable and less cost.  Believe me I know it sucks not being able to show it off daily driving but it just might be a smarter solution.  As for selling the JK that's gonna be tough but it might be the only option if you want a hard core wheeler on a budget.

Take care I understand this dilemma well.

Andrew the gun toting, CR-V wheeling, frugal, engineer

Hey Greg and Jeff -

Your podcast is awesome.  Thanks for the great work.

Ohio terrain tends to be a lot more muddy than rocky.  And it's more hilly than mountainous. Can you recommend a "top ten" list of recommended mods for rigs that are tackling this terrain?

Patrick

ps Can you give DAS Offroading a shout out on the show?  (DAS stands for Deep and Sticky.)

Main Topic: Overlanding?

Where is the love for the overland vehicles, A buddy of mine and I are planning a 30 day trip from Tennessee to Alaska and back. We are taking the long way around, We are driving West till we hit water then driving north till we hit water again. The way back will be through the Rocky Mountains pass. Here's the kicker, we are carrying 17 foot kayaks and bikes on our rigs. For the most part we will be sleeping and living out of the vehicles. Here is the question for you. I bought a 2015 Tacoma TRD Sport DCLB for this trip. I have a $5K build budget. Things to consider, It's not a rock crawler, It has to be able to transport camera and video equipment the Kayak and bike and still allow me to sleep in it. Oh, the vehicle has a bumper to bumper lifetime warranty on all mechanical parts and 8 year on electronics. How would you outfit this vehicle? Love the show, keep up the good work. Forgot to mention, Vehicle is stock but has a Bilstein 5100 2.5. Factory TRD roof racks skid plates and running boards. Dave..

Overlanding is self-reliant overland travel to remote destinations where the journey is the principal goal. Typically, but not exclusively, it is accomplished with mechanized off-road capable transport (from bicycles to trucks) where the principal form of lodging is camping, often lasting for extended lengths of time (months to years) and spanning international boundaries.
