love the show great string of topics. it makes the shift pass allot faster however i would like to hear more listener rides i love hearing what everyone else is running. stock modified or crazy. there is diversity in the off road world and i like to hear about it. i know some people in the Suzuki world essential to the sport and have done great things in forums and facebook pages i think that interviews with people like this would be interesting. there's my feedback keep up the good work (ps) putting a quarter in a jar every time i hear the word jeep on the air, up over a 1000$ now lol jk but not wrangler jk.

Pre-Trip service/inspection

  1. Check all fluid levels and qualities, is it time or close to time to service something?
  2. Check for fluid leaks
  3. Check tire condition, fix slow leaks or any other issues
  4. Check brakes
  5. Check belts and hoses
  6. Inspect roll cages and other items under constant stress, suspension attachment points

Post Trip service and inspection

  1. Clean mud, sand, salt, and other debris from vehicle. Coin op car wash
  2. Change oil?
  3. Clean change air filter
  4. Inspect for damage at stress areas.

Don’t forget your trailer

  1. Inspect for cracks, bends and other damage
  2. Pack wheel bearings
  3. Inspect service breaks
  4. Inspect wiring system and lights
  5. Inspect safety chains
  6. Inspect tires for weather cracks/dry rotting  and air pressure

Doing a brake job

  1. Always do both sides
  2. Always turn or replace rotors
  3. Lube the slide pins for disc brakes
  4. Use plenty of brake grease and shims where applicable
  5. When spreading calipers, undo the bleeder screw so you don’t damage ABS pump/system
  6. Bleed the brakes when done
  7. When doing rear brakes do one side at a time so you can see how they go together
  8. The right tool makes all the difference.
  9. Get a Torque wrench and always torque your lug nuts.

Hey guys! Love the podcast! Yours is the first off-road podcast/4x4 podcast I found (and I had been looking for literally years) that was accessible to a newb like me. Listening to episode 32 and I was thinking of some things you might be able to use as giveaways that aren't expensive and could be pretty universal: grab handles (admittedly kinda specific to Jeeps), shifter knobs, cellphone/GPS holders (suction cup type that attach to windshield), D-rings, tow hooks, hitches, Amazon gift cards, decals/stickers/graphics, gas cards, phone cases, gas cans, tire covers (can you tell I drive a TJ? Lol), any cleaning product like top conditioner/cleaner or leather cleaner or wax, memberships to 4x4 parks, etc. etc. This might seem like silly stuff, but I promise your listeners are listening for content, not free gear, so any giveaways at all would be icing on the proverbial cake. Four wheeler just did a "10 worst off road widgets" I'd love to hear your thoughts. Also, what are you going to talk about once the jeep is lifted?

Hey Jeff and Greg love the show keep up the good work don't think there are any other off road podcast as detailed as you (I know of one other podcast but not as good) here is my 88 Yoda kinda wish I had tools and need to do heavy offroading I've got a 85 with a straight axle sitting ready to be sold need a lot of work.

BTW both trucks have 31" x10.5"x15 (think thats right) tires I like the dick cepeks but they are bold so swapped them out for my $800 less Schwab A/T radials they have 50,000 miles on them with 70-80% tread left

Hi Guys!!

I love the show and have enjoyed it from the beginning!  Every time I hear Jeff talking about building a new rig, I never hear about the vehicle that I think might be perfect, the K-5 Blazer!  Parts are cheap, since most of the parts are also on the trucks as well.  The interior is nice and big (I'm 6'2" and have room to move the seat back more) but the outside dimensions are not that much larger than a Pathfinder.  And the best part, Chevy 350!! Again, parts are cheap, and abundant!  I know you guys aren't into motor work, so I'd recommend the early carbureted models, before the smog pumps (in my state, that's 1975 and earlier), or the early 90's where they went to the throttle body injection (TBI).  I have a 1992 with that motor, however it is IFS.  I would guess that you'd probably straight axle the front, and I wouldn't be surprised that some of the early model front suspension parts could be swapped/fabbed to fit on a '92-'94 model.

I'd love to hear what both of your thoughts are on a K-5!

Thank you for reading my email about my 87 4runner. I decided on getting some new bilstein 4300 shocks, and keeping the stock height. I also settled on getting a new used motor, I picked up a newer 22re with 120000 miles. Plan on changing the head gasket, head bolts, water pump, oil pump, flywheel, and clutch. I am still on the fence between 33 and 31 what do you guys recommend? I will be driving on the road allot going from state to state but my main goal is to be off road. After listing to your more of your shoes I decided to spend more of the money on winch and recovery equipment. Thanks again

I am a proud owner of a 2001 4.7 WJ and have owned several WJ's and ZJ's over the last few years. I have never really toyed with suspension unless it was standard maintenance (Track bar and such). I am weighing the options of lifting my current rig and am now finding out the issues of having a unibody vehicle. I am not wanting an insane lift but just something to give a bit more clearance. I live in the Appalachian Mountains and so most of the time I'm either driving in snow or driving some trails to go hiking. What kits would you recommend for this platform?

Hi Guys,

I really enjoy the show.

Hearing you joke about using aluminum parts so you could repair by welding beer cans made me really crack up. It reminded me of a welding story of my own.. I was going to weld steering dampeners on some motorcycles for some CRA racers. We did this at the one guys girlfriends house. I was in the garage clearing lines and wires away from the weld area, and grinding off the paint while the one guy was finding some steel we could use for the frame brackets. He brought in the pieces, I formed them and welded them on the  bikes. When finished I walked outside and there was a 4 year old kid looking at his tricycle that was cut into pieces in the yard. I guess some people have messed up priorities.

Thanks for the birthday shoutout. It was an exciting surprise to me. Happy belated birthday to you Jeff. I found the podcast on your episode 31 about King of the hammers. I have since gone back and listened to all of your episodes. I have enjoyed them all and will look forward to new shows each week. The 1966 chevy pick up that my wife referenced last week is 4 wheel drive. I bought it when I was 16 and have loved it ever since. It has seen a lot of off road miles over the years. I completely tore it down to a rolling chassis last summer and am in the middle of restoring it right now. This will be my focus for the next year or so, seeing as I already have about 90 % of the stuff I need to finish it. I bought my current wheeler (89 jeep cherokee on 35's and a long arm suspension) because it was cheap and already built. I could pay cash and be done with it, because I knew I wanted to start my truck. HaHa.(that was 2.5 years ago) I then had to install a locker in the front and build a custom heim jointed cross over steering for it.  My wife finally said "What about the truck?" (she's a real good woman, isn't she?) So any way, I'm working on my truck, but have already started gathering parts for a point and shoot juggy. I have taken some night classes at my local applied technology college and earned some low level mig welding certs. I have a 300 amp mig welder, but very little experience in custom fabrication. I know you have said your dad did all your welding when you were young, but any experience or pointers that you have learned over the years would be greatly appreciated. Any good how to books you have come across? Could you dedicate a whole episode to this aspect of off roading? Thank you for your time and effort with the show.

First off I love the podcast and the info is great, I just listened to the weight podcast and heard about double hi lifting a rig and I thought to write about this. I was wheeling and got stuck then used my hi lift as a come along and the handle snapped back and broke my fore arm. But i splinted my arm and finished the trip. Would it be possible to do a show on trail safety so this doesn't happen to someone else? Keep up the great work guys

ok today i started your podcast i normally enjoy it but i realized that my wife does more 4x4 adventuring with her bone stock jeep patriot  latitude.  Yes she did manage to get it stuck and needed to be rescued.

i bought a 87 4runner  and it is pretty good on the body but the motor has 300,000+ miles on it. i want to use it as a cross country rig, im going to drive across country and go through mild trails in mountains and desert and live out of it camping style in summer 2017. i am going to explore the west in this truck for 3 months straight so i need it reliable. i currently put two coats of AL'S heat and noise reducer and have one coat of monstaliner in the interior. i also plan on monstalinering the outside. it has IFS and i would like more travel and i dont know which direction to go. im not sure if i should put a lift on it ive read that the lift doesnt really benefit me asi can fit 31" tires with the stock suspesion. it does need new suspension im pretty sure it is original from 87. i was looking at doing the OME 2" kit, but after some research m not sure if a lift kit is needed. i know i want a locker and was thinking about getting a elocker from a newer 4runner. i do need to rebuild the motor but i have never tackled a project like this before. is there anything else that i need or should look into?

i just found out about your show and i love it. it keeps me up at work haha

Hello Greg and Jeff!

So I'm actually emailing in regards to my husband. Let me explain-- so my husband (his name is Calvin) LOVES the Offroad podcast. He discovered you about a month ago and listens to you CONSTANTLY! He says you have about 40 episodes and he has already listened to probably about half of them! But he LOVES the show-- he's a huge jeeping/truck guy and he basically has conversations with you as you do your podcast. He will respond to questions you ask each other, etc. It's pretty fun to watch :)

Like I said, he's a pretty big jeeping guy. When we first got married 5 1/2 years ago he had a TJ (1998?) and it was the Sport edition, and he did a bunch of stuff to it (a lot of mumbo jumbo that I don't understand!) but we were actually in Moab in 2011 and we rolled it on the highway going to our next trail (we live in Northern Utah, so we go to Moab quite a bit....) anyway, he now has a Jeep Cherokee, and I'm not sure of the year.... I wanna say 1989? Anyway, he has done a bunch of stuff to the "rear end" and the axles I believe.... He also has a 1966 Chevy truck that he is restoring at the moment. Sorry I sound terrible with this kind of talk! Anyway, the point of this email is to see if you would be willing to tell him HAPPY BIRTHDAY on the show? just a quick shout-out would literally make his WHOLE day. His birthday is 3/7,(he turns 28 years old) so this Saturday. Obviously it doesn't have to be on his birthday but I plan on not telling him and then one day he will be listening and will be SO caught off guard and so excited! thank you so much!

I have a stock 2005 Jeep Grand Cherokee (WK) In my spare time I like to take the jeep muddin and I always get small rocks wedged in my brake calipers and it makes the worst sounds when I get back on the pavement. Wrangler keeping solid axles

The Jeep Wrangler, descendant of the legendary Army Jeeps and Willys/Kaiser/AMC CJ series, will keep its solid axles after all.

The next-generation Wrangler, due in 2017, will get some updates to its suspension to improve ride and fuel economy. However, the basic design that allows the axles to maintain traction at all four wheels while traversing the most difficult terrain will remain.

Wrangler’s “smaller” body

The body design choices are:

  • Body on frame. A separate body structure is built on a full-length frame; the visible body panels are “unstressed,” not needed for rigidity. This is how current Wranglers and full-size Ram pickups are made.
  • Full monocoque. A single structure relies completely on stressed body panels with no subframes at all.
  • Roll cage. A separate structure provides a stress path through round tubes passing through (and independent of) the body structure, and tied to the main frame—either separate or subframes. One example is Norm Layton’s custom-made “Jeep” used for off-road endurance racing, pictured below.
  • Spaceframe. A series of extrusions (metal formed by forcing it through a die) that form a full load-carrying stressed structure; it’s usually a basic box shape, with flanges (ridges to add strength or hold different things together) added.

One has to do aluminum bodies before one can move on to aluminum space frames, which is likely the optimum future for the Jeep Wrangler.

As for the body appearance, it will likely be made narrower to present a smaller “face” to the wind, and be more aerodynamic. They can do this by closing gaps and shortening the track to pull the wheels back into the wheelhouses; it would actually be cheaper to switch to an independent front suspension to do this, than to narrow the axles.

Found this pretty nice cj. Looking for a daily driver that I can do some light wheeling in. They want 6800 for this one. Very little rust nice body new tires. Is that a pretty good price? Not sure on the tranny I just know it's the stock one. Thoughts? Should I be looking for something newer?

I am brand new to off roading, mostly fire roads and mud.  I just purchased a Full size 1988 K5 blazer and was wanting to know what mods would you suggest for a new off roader on a budget.  350 Motor Auto transmission (400r?) No lift, as of yet.  Hoping to get some good advice from guys who have been there.

Thanks for the Overland episode guys, my daughter and I loved every minute of it. You guys made some excellent points so I will adjust accordingly. The spare tire carrier seems to be a no brainer now.

What I have to start.

The Truck has a Bilstein 5100 2.5 lift and five Cooper 265/70-17 AT3 tires on it right now, The Taco is a 4X4 equipped with Limited slip Diff, TRD Running boards, TRD cab roof rack, TRD skid plates. I own an extensive selection of camping backpacking kit, so the food prep and sleeping supplies have been accounted for. My bud is driving a PRO-4X Xterra, we have no passengers but that might change.

Options I’m not sure of.

Should I go for an ARB Diff locker or for a lightweight option, like the Undercover HWMS?

As far as the camper top, should I get a hard shell or soft shell like Bestop?

Snorkel, pros & cons?

Should I do dual or a larger deep cycle battery?

Should I opt for a plate or ARB style front bumper instead?

I’ve got a few thoughts on the overland episode. While I'm no expert, I do play one on internet forums. But seriously I've had a few occasions to speak to overlanders and it seems the theme is capable and reliable. Balanced mild builds seem to work the best. Inline with camping/backpacking mentality

The trd probably already has a rear electric locker so that's a plus so I'd leave the reliable drivetrain alone. I'd go simple budget boost just get a little more room, possibly go 1 size bigger on the tires. That way you could get a little more performance without regearing or overworking the brakes. Plus it would suck to get the kayaks off a truck on 40's. Next I'd get a winch, but I would get a receiver mount so I could move it front to rear as needed.

After that I would spend the money on upgraded battery, gps, topper and storage solutions for the bed. I'd also get some sort of lockable storage for the important stuff. Tuffy bed drawers would be perfect, a bed roll/sleeping bag could lay right on top with plenty of secure storage below. Like you guys said, a larger fuel tank would be nice along with arb tire plug kit and air source.

I'd also carry a big bore revolver. I know how much you love revolvers Greg but that's how roll. Great show as always!

Well its been a hard secret to keep, with rumors flying for the past few weeks. But the press release came out today so its official: Poison Spyder has been bought by Transamerican, the parent company of 4 Wheel Parts. As we're gearing up for King Of the Hammers, we know this news will be competing with anything we're doing on the race course, so we wanted to let you, our fans, customers, friends and distributors know what's going on and address some of your concerns.

First of all, I (Larry McRae), am not going anywhere. I'm staying on as President of Poison Spyder, the only difference is that Greg Adler's signature will be on my paycheck instead of my own. The same with our staff, everyone is staying put, in fact we'll be adding more. The team that got Poison Spyder to where it is today is what Transamerican was after, and they intend to keep it intact. We'll continue to do our own product development, sales, marketing, and of course traveling the country to events to meet and wheel with you guys. And very importantly, our products will continue to be built in the same Poison Spyder facilities in Banning, California.

So what IS going to change? The biggest thing is we'll now have access to Transamerican's considerable resources to fuel our growth, keep the shelves full and expand our product lines. And through their distribution channels we'll be able to bring Poison Spyder products to a larger market. But for the most part, Poison Spyder will continue to function mostly autonomously. Those of you who like buying direct from Poison Spyder will still be able to do so.

Over the coming week we're going to have our hands full out here at King Of the Hammers, so its not the most convenient time for this news to break. But we welcome your thoughts on this. I think your head knows what you should do, put the FAM and the future first. How else do you think I ended up with a cr-v and not Grand Cherokee, or 4runner.  I you have mentioned this struggle on two episodes now.  I think you can host this show like a boss without this dream JK.  Also, a trailer queen sounds like a better option. More capable and less cost.  Believe me I know it sucks not being able to show it off daily driving but it just might be a smarter solution.  As for selling the JK that's gonna be tough but it might be the only option if you want a hard core wheeler on a budget.

Where is the love for the overland vehicles, A buddy of mine and I are planning a 30 day trip from Tennessee to Alaska and back. We are taking the long way around, We are driving West till we hit water then driving north till we hit water again. The way back will be through the Rocky Mountains pass. Here's the kicker, we are carrying 17 foot kayaks and bikes on our rigs. For the most part we will be sleeping and living out of the vehicles. Here is the question for you. I bought a 2015 Tacoma TRD Sport DCLB for this trip. I have a $5K build budget. Things to consider, It's not a rock crawler, It has to be able to transport camera and video equipment the Kayak and bike and still allow me to sleep in it. Oh, the vehicle has a bumper to bumper lifetime warranty on all mechanical parts and 8 year on electronics. How would you outfit this vehicle? Love the show, keep up the good work. Forgot to mention, Vehicle is stock but has a Bilstein 5100 2.5. Factory TRD roof racks skid plates and running boards. Dave..

Overlanding is self-reliant overland travel to remote destinations where the journey is the principal goal. Greg I'm a fan of Alaska off road warriors.Don't cave to the hosers who have an elitist attitude,superior rigs,and claim to be off road masters able to conquer any obstacle with ease.

Granted these guys on the show are a little hoakie and red neck but they are also just regular joes that I see and associate with out on the trails every year.  Their rigs are simple and inexpensive but capable of a lot of off road fun .You Don't need 40s,dynatrac axles with ARBs front and rear and amazing gears to go out on the trail be safe and have fun.o yea and spend 10,20 30 thousand in the process.  The show may be flawed in some regards but it's real off road adventure,the Alaska scenery is stunning and to those on the show I'll bet it will be the adventure of a life time.  Hey just my take,love the podcast keep it  going.

To take you up on the additional help from my Toyota question in episode 27 I'm sending additional details on the truck

(This is the Toyota from Episodes 15 and 19 too)

'84 stock Toyota SR5, 4x4, 22R, 5 speed.  I will keep the engine and transmission on it.  I want to run something on the order of 35-37-" Tires.  I would like a good amount of lift, but nothing ridiculous.  This will be a road legal rig, but not a daily driver.  (Just enough to where I don't have to haul it if I don't want to, but I don't need all the creature comforts that you have in a daily driver.)  Regearing seems like the way to go, I think I'll go with 5.29 unless you think something else is better.  I may also drop an EFI unit on it too to gain a few horses.

Plans for the rig: some 4x4ing, hunting, fishing and Search and Rescue.  Additionally I have no CARB requirements here in WY.

So Greg, I have to say I still love the show, but every time you pimp the Alaska Off-road  Warriors I lose a little respect for you. That show is so cheesy and the white trash characters are so annoying. As you mentioned on show 26, the brothers are tweekers.  Butch in war wagon  is a drama queen, and completely ridiculous. Super Jeep is some kind of Frankenstein junk rig. I really think the show is making off-roaders look bad and the cast is just too obnoxious to watch.

I realize Off-roading needs any coverage we can get, but that show is just over the top dumb.

Just my 2 cents.  Other than that keep up the great show.

Hey Guys,

I was hoping that you could swing back around and answer the second half of my question from Episode 19 on my 84 Toyota.

"B) What is a good way to go to beef up the front axle and suspension on front and back? (including lift to allow for the big tires)?  I obviously need to lift it some, but I don’t want to get into a situation where it wants to tip over easily.   And then specific recommendations for making the front axle bulletproof would be appreciated."

Hi Greg and Jeff,

You asked our opinion about upgrading your jeep's axles and tires. In episode 25 you mentioned that there is a kit to make your rear axle full float and your front full float with part time 4wd. I think this is a better idea than spending a lot of dollars on new axles. I would update your axles with the full float kit and run 37's.  You are only losing about 1 1/2 inches of ground clearance for a lot less money. Spend the money on skid plates, Rock sliders and a good winch.
