Hi  I just started listening to your podcast and love it. I'm going to buy a jeep and want to do some trail riding but I don't have the time or garage to build a jeep do to being in the military. I just wanted know what you think about the rocky ridge jeep packages they put on the new jeeps I'm looking to buy one of those. Here's a link to one  http://www.sherry4x4.com/vehicle/2015-jeep-wrangler-unlimited-rubicon-rocky-ridge-k-2-27451t/#  If you could just let me what you think if it's worth it or not and if the suspension or parts they put on it  are good. Thanks for the help.

Patriot Patch Company

Main Topic: are your gears turning overs gears

Does your head feel like exploding because you went and lifted your rig and put larger tires on and now you feel like your rig doesn't get around like it used to or when you go to the hills you're over in the bike lane thinking about getting out and pushing your rig up the hill because  it would be faster. once you figure out that the taller tires changed your ratios you start research that you need to change your gears but then your head starts to hurt  again because you have no idea what gears to change too. well with a little bit of the universal language “math” you can figure out what ratio will work best for you if not better.

Basics of a differential

  1. gear ratios what are they and how do they work
  1. definition: the ratio of the rotational speeds of the first and final gears in a trainof gears or of any two meshing gears.
  1. How does a differential work
  1. http://auto.howstuffworks.com/differential.htm ,https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yYAw79386WI
  2. factory gear ratios are set to optimize your vehicle for factory size tires and factory power. the gearing in your factory differential allows optimum use of your engine's power whether that be used to go down the freeway and get optimum fuel milage or to tow a big load up hills and down the road without stressing your transmission and engine depending on what your vehicle was built for.
  3. high gear ratio example 3:08 low gear ratio example 4:56
  4. lower numbers equal higher ratios and higher numbers equal lower gears
  1. What affects gear ratios
  1. tire size: if you go up in tire size it means there's a larger ratio from gears to ground and smaller tires means you get a smaller ratio to the ground. when you go up in size it gives you higher gear ratios which is better for higher speeds but you lose power in the bottom end.
  2. changing a transmission or transfer case: shorter shifting transmissions will affect how fast your engine maxes out to the power from the engine. lower transfer cases do the same
  3. engine power: more power can mean you need less gear less power means you need more gears.
  1. gear math

I have an 06 Tacoma with 31” tires and a little body lift. Is that built enough to join a club and do some light crawling while I learn or should I wait until I have the money to build it more? I know you guys were on an old episode that club members don’t like people coming in with rigs that aren’t built enough.

I would say you’re truck is  built enough to join a club, you just have to realize that you are not going to be able to go on every run. Just make sure you don’t invite yourself on runs that are beyond your capabilities and your rigs capabilities.

Recently went out to the Oceano dunes with some friends. Looking for some advice regarding off-roading in the sand here are some of my questions I have:

  1. Recommended rigs and set up.
  2. Tire combinations and air pressures
  3. Towing in the sand
  4. Recovery options / tricks to get out of sand
  5. General actives at the dunes / off-road equipment at the dunes.
  6. Possible safety concerns

Thanks any info is appreciated!

Sand Knowledge

  1. recovery skills
  1. know how to use your recovery equipment tow ropes tow hooks winch etc.
  2. make sure you have proper recovery tools.
  1. proper tow points front and rear of vehicle attached to frame
  2. proper tow strap nothing with hooks and rated for at least twice your  vehicle weight.
  3. winch movable from front to rear is best and mounted properly.
  4. land anchor if using winch. also a snatch block
  5. momentum is your friend when towing someone out .
  6. Sand driving
  1. air pressure is king lower is better in the sand, don't go so low that you pull your tire off the bead or run beadlocks.
  2. know how to use your vehicle and its off road systems ie four wheel drive or lockers.
  1. know how your four wheel drive engages and weather it's gonna be better in low range or high.
  1. some low ranges are too low and don't allow enough tire speed.
  2. Tires and tire pressures
  3. wide knobby tires work great mud tires like swampers turned                  backwards can act like sand paddle
  4. sand paddles work great but cannot be used on the street also you need power to turn them
  5. safety concerns
  1. all vehicles in dunes should be flying a flag
  2. watch for other riders while coming over the peak of a dune no blind jumping
  3. if having to jack a vehicle up in the sand remember that sand is soft and moves really easily vehicle can crush you.
  4. when winching or towing stay far away out of the radius of lines. watch for snapping lines.
  5. always be on the lookout for other drivers or riders lots of inexperienced riders and drivers out there.

Listener feedback

Steve aka Truck Norris: It would be really cool if you did a show on 2-wheelin!  I was actually hoping you'd do that when I wrote in!

My SUV is my DD, so I really can't (don't want to) go too knobby on the tires.  Too soft, too loud and too much $$ -lol.

I've heard BFG makes some pretty good street/mud tires.

I like the idea a fan extra set of rims, but my wife is already nagging me that the garage is too full and needs to be cleaned out...

I didn't even know you could move a winch from front to back!!  Makes good sense, though!  I was thinking the same thing: cable over synthetic.  It gets brutally hot here in the summer, and the sun does a number on lots of things!!

The last time I went wheeling was my 1st time. I was (and still am) a rookie, but I want to do more (that's why I listen to your show!!!).  I had a '76 CJ7.  It was in Maine in the spring. There was still some ice/snow in the woods. I hit an icy spot on a little slope. I was pinned against a tree. I couldn't go forward or backward. All I had with me was a hammer. I had to get out and break all the ice just to move. I've learned a lot since that time: winch, tires, don't go alone.  lol

Firearms Radio Network t-Shirt pre-order Main Topic: 2WD Wheeling

Basic Types of 2WD wheeling:

  • Trail Rigs
  • Prerunners

Limitations of a 2wd Rig:

  • Obvious, NO 4WD
  1. how this will affect you on trails vs open desert
  • Typically weaker knuckles and hubs

Figure Out Your Vehicle Goals:

  • What types of wheeling are local to you? What practice interests you most
  • What Is your budget?

2WD Trail Rig 5 points to address on a limited budget/DD

  • Tires: A/Ts are nice… M/Ts are better
  • Diff: L/S , Lockers and Spool
  1. L/S: Great street manners, reliable, predicatble, good for mild trails
  2. Lockers: Poor Mans(2wd guys) 4x4, Can be unpredictable on the street, Can cause faster tire wear, Hard on 3rd member on the street. Good for mild -> Intermediate trails
  1. Mechanical Lockers, Air Lockers, E-Lockers
  1. Spools: Solid axle, fast tire wear, full power on both wheels 24/7, poor street manners, most predicatble on the dirt
  • Front Spindles: Spindle Gussets, Fabricated Spindles
  1. Often a weak point on 2wd rigs but can be remedied many ways depending on budget
  • Ground Clearance
  1. lift it once and lift it right
  2. lift kit options- Spacers/blocks, lift coils, OEM replacement shocks/Coilovers
  3. being able to maintain momentum helps a lot on certain obsticles, you will want the clearance to do so
  1. can also include fabricated bumpers for better approach angle (also applies to 4wd rigs)
  • Recovery Gear/safety
  1. better to have it and not need it than need it and not have it…youll more than likely need it
  2. Maxtrax, 2x4’s things to help you get traction
  3. Tow rope, shovels, highlift jacks, winches for when traction is not an option
  4. Roll Bars/Cages
