First off I love the podcast and the info is great, I just listened to the weight podcast and heard about double hi lifting a rig and I thought to write about this. I was wheeling and got stuck then used my hi lift as a come along and the handle snapped back and broke my fore arm. But i splinted my arm and finished the trip. Would it be possible to do a show on trail safety so this doesn't happen to someone else? Keep up the great work guys

ok today i started your podcast i normally enjoy it but i realized that my wife does more 4x4 adventuring with her bone stock jeep patriot  latitude.  Yes she did manage to get it stuck and needed to be rescued.

i bought a 87 4runner  and it is pretty good on the body but the motor has 300,000+ miles on it. i want to use it as a cross country rig, im going to drive across country and go through mild trails in mountains and desert and live out of it camping style in summer 2017. i am going to explore the west in this truck for 3 months straight so i need it reliable. i currently put two coats of AL'S heat and noise reducer and have one coat of monstaliner in the interior. i also plan on monstalinering the outside. it has IFS and i would like more travel and i dont know which direction to go. im not sure if i should put a lift on it ive read that the lift doesnt really benefit me asi can fit 31" tires with the stock suspesion. it does need new suspension im pretty sure it is original from 87. i was looking at doing the OME 2" kit, but after some research m not sure if a lift kit is needed. i know i want a locker and was thinking about getting a elocker from a newer 4runner. i do need to rebuild the motor but i have never tackled a project like this before. is there anything else that i need or should look into?

i just found out about your show and i love it. it keeps me up at work haha

Hello Greg and Jeff!

So I'm actually emailing in regards to my husband. Let me explain-- so my husband (his name is Calvin) LOVES the Offroad podcast. He discovered you about a month ago and listens to you CONSTANTLY! He says you have about 40 episodes and he has already listened to probably about half of them! But he LOVES the show-- he's a huge jeeping/truck guy and he basically has conversations with you as you do your podcast. He will respond to questions you ask each other, etc. It's pretty fun to watch :)

Like I said, he's a pretty big jeeping guy. When we first got married 5 1/2 years ago he had a TJ (1998?) and it was the Sport edition, and he did a bunch of stuff to it (a lot of mumbo jumbo that I don't understand!) but we were actually in Moab in 2011 and we rolled it on the highway going to our next trail (we live in Northern Utah, so we go to Moab quite a bit....) anyway, he now has a Jeep Cherokee, and I'm not sure of the year.... I wanna say 1989? Anyway, he has done a bunch of stuff to the "rear end" and the axles I believe.... He also has a 1966 Chevy truck that he is restoring at the moment. Sorry I sound terrible with this kind of talk! Anyway, the point of this email is to see if you would be willing to tell him HAPPY BIRTHDAY on the show? just a quick shout-out would literally make his WHOLE day. His birthday is 3/7,(he turns 28 years old) so this Saturday. Obviously it doesn't have to be on his birthday but I plan on not telling him and then one day he will be listening and will be SO caught off guard and so excited! thank you so much!

ps- he also loves your show because "riding the Rubicon" is on his bucket list :)

GGR 154 – EarthRoamer Off Road Adventures

I am brand new to off roading, mostly fire roads and mud.  I just purchased a Full size 1988 K5 blazer and was wanting to know what mods would you suggest for a new off roader on a budget.  350 Motor Auto transmission (400r?) No lift, as of yet.  Hoping to get some good advice from guys who have been there.

Thanks for the Overland episode guys, my daughter and I loved every minute of it. You guys made some excellent points so I will adjust accordingly. The spare tire carrier seems to be a no brainer now.

What I have to start.

The Truck has a Bilstein 5100 2.5 lift and five Cooper 265/70-17 AT3 tires on it right now, The Taco is a 4X4 equipped with Limited slip Diff, TRD Running boards, TRD cab roof rack, TRD skid plates. I own an extensive selection of camping backpacking kit, so the food prep and sleeping supplies have been accounted for. My bud is driving a PRO-4X Xterra, we have no passengers but that might change.

Options I’m not sure of.

Should I go for an ARB Diff locker or for a lightweight option, like the Undercover HWMS?

As far as the camper top, should I get a hard shell or soft shell like Bestop?

Snorkel, pros & cons?

Should I do dual or a larger deep cycle battery?

Should I opt for a plate or ARB style front bumper instead?

I’ve got a few thoughts on the overland episode. While I'm no expert, I do play one on internet forums. But seriously I've had a few occasions to speak to overlanders and it seems the theme is capable and reliable. Balanced mild builds seem to work the best. Inline with camping/backpacking mentality

The trd probably already has a rear electric locker so that's a plus so I'd leave the reliable drivetrain alone. I'd go simple budget boost just get a little more room, possibly go 1 size bigger on the tires. That way you could get a little more performance without regearing or overworking the brakes. Plus it would suck to get the kayaks off a truck on 40's. Next I'd get a winch, but I would get a receiver mount so I could move it front to rear as needed.

After that I would spend the money on upgraded battery, gps, topper and storage solutions for the bed. I'd also get some sort of lockable storage for the important stuff. Tuffy bed drawers would be perfect, a bed roll/sleeping bag could lay right on top with plenty of secure storage below. Like you guys said, a larger fuel tank would be nice along with arb tire plug kit and air source.

I'd also carry a big bore revolver. I know how much you love revolvers Greg but that's how roll. Great show as always!

Well its been a hard secret to keep, with rumors flying for the past few weeks. But the press release came out today so its official: Poison Spyder has been bought by Transamerican, the parent company of 4 Wheel Parts. As we're gearing up for King Of the Hammers, we know this news will be competing with anything we're doing on the race course, so we wanted to let you, our fans, customers, friends and distributors know what's going on and address some of your concerns.

First of all, I (Larry McRae), am not going anywhere. I'm staying on as President of Poison Spyder, the only difference is that Greg Adler's signature will be on my paycheck instead of my own. The same with our staff, everyone is staying put, in fact we'll be adding more. The team that got Poison Spyder to where it is today is what Transamerican was after, and they intend to keep it intact. We'll continue to do our own product development, sales, marketing, and of course traveling the country to events to meet and wheel with you guys. And very importantly, our products will continue to be built in the same Poison Spyder facilities in Banning, California.

So what IS going to change? The biggest thing is we'll now have access to Transamerican's considerable resources to fuel our growth, keep the shelves full and expand our product lines. And through their distribution channels we'll be able to bring Poison Spyder products to a larger market. But for the most part, Poison Spyder will continue to function mostly autonomously. Those of you who like buying direct from Poison Spyder will still be able to do so.

Over the coming week we're going to have our hands full out here at King Of the Hammers, so its not the most convenient time for this news to break. But we welcome your thoughts on this. So glad Jeff is back, much better when you both are there.

So Greg, I have to say I still love the show, but every time you pimp the Alaska Off-road  Warriors I lose a little respect for you. That show is so cheesy and the white trash characters are so annoying. As you mentioned on show 26, the brothers are tweekers.  Butch in war wagon  is a drama queen, and completely ridiculous. Super Jeep is some kind of Frankenstein junk rig. I really think the show is making off-roaders look bad and the cast is just too obnoxious to watch.

I realize Off-roading needs any coverage we can get, but that show is just over the top dumb.

Just my 2 cents.  Other than that keep up the great show.

Hey Guys,

I was hoping that you could swing back around and answer the second half of my question from Episode 19 on my 84 Toyota.

"B) What is a good way to go to beef up the front axle and suspension on front and back? (including lift to allow for the big tires)?  I obviously need to lift it some, but I don’t want to get into a situation where it wants to tip over easily.   And then specific recommendations for making the front axle bulletproof would be appreciated."

Why do I want a 14 bolt?

Being a full float axle, it of course has full floating (FF) wheel hubs and axle shafts.

The axle shaft does not support the weight of the vehicle, but merely transmits torque.  Because of the above - FF axle shafts are not subject to bending loads like semi float (SF) axles are and can therefore be made of harder materials making them capable of carrying greater torque loads.  If you should ever break a rear FF axle shaft, you will not loose the wheel too.If you need to change a FF rear axle, it is extremely easy and simple to do.The hubs run big, strong, common, reasonably cheap wheel bearings, races, and seals (14b Dana 60 and 70 bearings, front and rear, are all the same).

The wheel bearings are not pressed onto anything, if need be they can be removed and replaced with nothing more than a screwdriver and big hammer.

Gear strength - 10.5" ring gear, 1.750" 30 spline pinion, huge 2 piece carrier made of 8620 Heat treated alloy steel, extra pinion bearing support Shaft strength - 1.5' 30 spline full floating shafts.  Housing strength - massive cast iron center section, 3.25: x 0.5" tubes.  Comes in two widths - 63" and 67" wms-wms, easily converted from one to the other (shafts are common) Removable pinion support, unbolts from the rest of housing, makes for easier gear setup.  Diff housing has built-in threaded carrier pre-load adjusters, makes for easier gear setup.  Because the carrier is so large and strong, a "full" detroit locker fits in the stock housing, and is therefore easy to install without gear setup changes, and is much cheaper than other 1 ton FF lockers.  Pinion yokes commonly available for 1350 series u-joints.  Commonly came stock with 4.10 and 4.56 gears and Detroit Lockers.  Cheap and easy to find, buy, and build.  Easy to convert to disc brakes.  Easy to "shave" for 2" inch gain in clearance.  Pinion length shorter than other 1 ton ff rear axles (D60, D70), for improved driveshaft length and angles.  Large ID spindles.

Common spindle nut threads with Dana 60 front axle, meaning only one style of spindle nut and socket need be used/carried.

Where do I find the 14 bolt?

The 14 bolt is found in a huge number of GM 4x4 pickup trucks and vans, 3/4 and 1 ton, from the 70's right through until at least 2000.

How do I identify a 14 bolt?

It is most easily distinguished by its huge, uniquely shaped diff cover that is, of course, held on with 14 bolts.

It is also fairly easily distinguished from other 1 ton full-float rear axles by the removable pinion support.
