Feedback:

Hey Ben,
First off, I’ve been listening to the show for a year or so, but I haven't interacted with you guys before.  I love listening and always look forward to the new episodes dropping. I live in Bremerton Washington, so when I found out you guys were local to me, it really drew me in. I was wondering a few things.  I missed the last time you guys had a listener meet up in Tahuya because I was overseas for work. I was wondering if you guys were going to do another one soon? The other thing, I was wondering how you felt about opening your WABDR trip up to a few listeners.  I was hoping to do WABDR this year, but we had our first baby a few months ago and I am having a hard time convincing my wife to come with me. In the interest of not going alone, maybe a listener trip would be a fun trip. Thanks for providing great content!

What would you suggest to anyone looking to get into wheeling or who just got started?

Roberts question

hey carl i had a listener write in and ask a question maybe you could help answer this its a little beyond my know how Don't hate me but I'm gutting the leaf springs in the front. I did not want to look at the crowded front bumper anymore.

Can I fabricate a curved upper link on a 3 link? I understand it will be heavier and harder to adjust since it will have to stay vertical. I see track bars bent to clear oil pans all the time. I want to fab the upper arm, it will give me 4 inches of more compression. Well worth the time....if it can be done?

Feedback

Hello, Listening to the last episode and you finished the torsion lift on your Ranger. I have a Ranger, but held off on the torsion lift as I read it strains the cv joints on the front axle shafts, and you need an alignment after. So far I've done a body lift and F150 rear springs, with an Explorer 8.8 axle. The 33s clear the rear no problem, but rub under minimal flex up front. What's your experience with the Ranger rubbing as you didn't mention the size of the Suburban wheels. Thank you for your time, Brandon from Spokane

Steve’s Reply:

Hello Brandon. The 1st question. CV shafts and alignment. Any time you change something on the front end that has to do with suspension and steering you should do an alignment. If you lift the front end to high you can indeed put the CV shafts at to great of an angle.  I have not measured mine, but they don't seem to be significantly more than what I started with. I am running 265/75/16's. I believe they are only about a 32" tall tire.  If I turn lock to lock they rub on the inside just a little. Hope that helps Steve.

Announcement: we are looking for contributors to the show another perspective never hurts and that what helps the show roll on.

Tech tip:

With today's computer programs a parts guy does not have the chance to really learn what is interchangeable other than what the computer says.  Even at the the dealer. So if doing a performance swap or upgrade be sure to do some research. Forums and clubs are a great place to gain such information.  Check their tech pages and other document posts for good tidbits of information. Remember to save part numbers for things that may be part of something else.

From Kevin

On this weeks episode you guys asked what we thought of state vs private parks. I’m in the Dfw area in Texas and we have a state park about 45min to an hour from me that while it's a good park with trails and some rock climbing, it's not very well kept to entice people to wanna come back and bring more people. Cost is about $25 per vehicle per day.

The private park we visit is about a 3 hour drive from and is great. The do a membership program that goes back into the park. Adding lodging, bathrooms, showers, and most recently full RV hookups. Again mix of trails and rock crawling. Entrance prices vary on day to day and camping, but are on par with the state park. They also do clean up weekends where you wheel for free but help clear trails and pick up trash around the park.

Announcement!

As we mentioned last week, we’ve got a new sponsor.  You heard Jeep Joe on our show 3 weeks ago and again last week.  He works for a Jeep dealership in Minnesota and convinced his boss to sponsor our podcast with some of their advertising dollars.

Park Chrysler Jeep is the Wrangler destination in Minnesota.  They’re the only AEV dealer within 500 miles. Park not only sells Wranglers, they out fit and accessorize them tailored to your individual needs & wishes. Park’s service department has specialized technicians that would love to build your dream. Their parts department carries more inventory than any other dealer in the mid-west. Their customer experience managers have as much as 20 years of experience up fitting & accessorizing Wranglers. Park also hosts several off road customer events. Jeep isn’t just a passion for them, it’s a way of life. Should you not be close to their location in the Minneapolis suburbs, they can ship you parts or an entire vehicle. Don’t be bashful, give the guys that enjoy Jeeps as much as you do a call. It’s a Jeep thing and they understand. Also, mention that you’re a listener of the Off Road Podcast and get $250 off your next vehicle, whether it’s a Jeep or not.  It’s not a ton but that could be used for some upgrade parts.

Tech tip

Your kitty litter from your spill kit can double as a traction aid on ice and snow.

Main Topic

The 19 hour snow camp trip

  • Left earlier than planned.  Only a 90 minute drive to the 1st road I plan to check out. (9am)

  • Split pants.

  • Didn’t have bungees for tire chains.

  • Hot high centered.

  • Remote controls (I have 2) for winch had dead batteries.

  • Winched forward only to sink in crusty snow.

  • Undid winch line, put wired winch controller into tongue box on trailer, prepared to make a break for it, in reverse.

  • Was able to back out with lots of momentum.  (1 hour lost)

  • When heading to next place on list I found a DOT guy who suggested FS46

  • Found a spot right away at Y in road but the site was trashed.  Broken pop up, Trashed tarp, broken table, general garbage.

  • Moved on to find tree across road.  Cut it out of the way with a chainsaw.

  • Dropped trailer in middle of road to be more efficient in looking for a new spot.

  • Forward momentum is slow so I decide to lower air pressure in the tires.

  • On the 1st tire, the ARB deflator won’t let go of the valve core  My son calls out, “Are we stuck again?”

  • Can’t find needle nose pliers to get it out.  Dig out spare valve core and thread it in with valve core tool.

  • Get moving again.  Road dead ends 2 miles up the road.  Reverse all the way back to trailer and hook up.  (30 minutes lost)

  • Drop trailer in thrashed camp site.  Have to back the trailer in and out several times uphill and around a corner.  Tranny gets hot and goes into limp mode.

  • Clear code (3 times) and let it cool down a bit.  Drop into 4 low.

  • Cross highway to check out another FS road.  Has a nice spot but there is a vehicle already parked there.  Snowshoers maybe?

  • Head back across highway take the other road at the Y.  Find a nice place about 3 miles up the road down another road 1 mile.  Head back for trailer,

  • On way to get trailer I find “better spot”  Driving into spot I get stuck.  High centered on the skid plates stuck.

  • Where did I leave that winch controller???  Shoot my big shovel is in the trailer also.

  • Was able to dig myself out some and use Maxtrax to get out the rest of the way. (20 min lost)

  • Hooked up to trailer and pulled it to camp.

  • Get to camp and start to set up. (3pm)

  • Cook dinner.  Starts to snow.  Somehow get text that a big storm is moving in. (5pm)

  • After dinner pre-load truck in case we have to bolt quickly.

  • Finish movie, 1 last bathroom break, & still snowing hard (9:30pm)

  • Can’t sleep because wrist hurts, son is having night terrors, and large amounts of snow is hitting tent from tree accumulation.

  • Make decision to get outta dodge. (midnight)

  • Leave camp. (1:15am)

  • Thankfully it is mostly down hill.  The ruts in the road are mostly filled with fresh snow.

  • Large branches and small trees are bowing over the road from the heavy weight of the snow.  I accelerate faster to punch through them.

  • Snow is splashing over the hood as if I a fording a river because of the build up from the center of the road.  It is packing into the wipers. Wipers and defrost can’t keep up.

  • Have to stop multiple times to clear the snow from the headlight and roof lights so that they can shine onto the roadway.  Also clear snow from wipers, cowl, and grille.

  • It is almost apocalyptic!

  • Near bottom of hill I shift into 4high in preparation to pull onto highway.  In my head I assumed the highway would have little to know snow and probably plowed.  Nope!

  • I don’t stop at the stop sign at the top of the little rise as I head out onto the highway.  The highway is covered in compact snow and ice.

  • Pull into 1st gas station I find to air up tires under their filling station canopy.

  • While Airing up the local sheriff tells me that they are expecting 8-12 more inches of snow that coming day. (1:45am)

  • Drive home slowly.

  • Get home, park in driveway half hanging over the sidewalk, and text family that I made it home. (4:15am)

I remember reading a review from a guy that tested a whole bunch of pressure gauges and found this one http://www.amazon.com/Accurate-Digital-Pressure-Trucks-Motorcycles/dp/B00HYD65LY to be very affordable and accurate. I bought 3. I believe the digital gauges are remarkably accurate, I believe their website is here http://www.rstec1.com or something. It also has a car escape tool as part of it as well...cool gadget.

Listener feedback

Hello, my name is Eric. I am a 2016 Toyota Tacoma owner. I have the 4x4 Off Road version of this vehicle and I have studied the first, second, and third generation Tacomas.

Being a third gen owner, I noticed that it was stated that second generation, 2004 to 2015, Tacoma came with ATS and then Crawl Control a few years later. All TRD Off Road models came with ATRAC which is active traction control which controls individual brake calipers to keep all wheels spinning at the same speed. The Off Road also has an electric locking differential in the rear. There is NO Crawl Control in any second generation Tacoma. Prior to 2012, you could get a six lug vehicle with a mechanical LSD but it was rare.

The biggest difference as an option to the second generation is the 4.0 liter V6. This is a tested and proven engine over the life of the generation. I was, and always am, disappointed that it was not mentioned that a TRD Sport exists and is very popular. This TRD package is cosmetic and more of an on-road package. Many people group the Sport and Off Road and call them TRDs when they are completely different packages.

The third generation Tacoma, 2016 to present, has Crawl Control, which many owners consider a gimmick. Based in the same control group as Crawl Control, though, is MTS, Multi Terrain Select. MTS is the old ATRAC with 5 settings. This is very useful when driving off road on different surfaces.

Crawl Control was/is also offered on current generations of Land Cruisers. This is where Crawl Control started before it was put into the Tacoma.

It was later mentioned that the 4runner has Crawl Control, as well. This is incorrect as the current 4Runner PRO has 1-setting ATRAC.

When speaking of the first generation, it was stated that a prerunner or TRD model was made with 'taller shocks'. There was not always a Prerunner model made but when it was, it came with 6 lug, 16 inch wheels. All 4 wheel drive models also came with the 6 lug wheels.

I could go on talking about Tacomas for days. I was bummed that the Tacoma section was so short and so inaccurate.

Thanks Eric

None of us at the time of the recording of the episode were very knowledgeable about Toyotas.  Now that we have Cameron on board he will be able to help pick out errors as he has some good history with them.  We can only rely on what our guests to tell us correct info.  We do try to do some research before the show does live to catch mistakes.

Thanks for writing in and calling us out on our mistakes.  We appreciate that people care enough to point them out and our listeners deserve to know the correct information.

Listener Feedback

CJ5 After.jpg

Israel wrote in that he recently found the podcast and was on episode 19 and he was working his way through catching up even though he was looking for our previous hosts i gladly helped him with what advice i could as it reads

I currently live in Parker, C0 (south of Denver). Bought a jeep two years ago and have enjoyed wrenching and making it reliable for weekend trips and “yes” hate to admit it, but sometimes my grocery getter.

Overview on my rig:

1983 CJ jeep

2 inch lift

33 /12.5 /15 inch BFG

AVM hubs

Inline 6 stock-

Pro Comp rear bumper

custom front bumper- two point recover hooks

front axle (dana 30 stock?) and rear axle (amc 20)

Now that I have driven it around town and taken a few small trips to the mountains, I really want to increase my range off road.  Yes, I’ve babied it but I’m sure all can relate to a new build.  Most trips have been on forest roads and muddy gravel roads. I’m not looking to get crazy or hit extreme trails but enough to get me to the next level without abusing my CJ. Yes, it’s a short wheelbase and may not be able to climb big boulders but I want my jeep to get over tree trunks or ditches with little effort.  Eventually, I want a newer jeep, TJ or JK but for now this is what I got.

So, I think I know the answers but I want your guys input.  If you’ve already discussed this, I guess I’ll listen to it shortly once I get caught up.

  1. Should I add selectable lockers in the front or rear?  ( I am only doing one locker because of budget. Wedding planned for 2017)

  2. Is it worth adding lockers to stock axles on my cj5?

  3. Do I spend money on a winch or lockers first?

  4. I also need to replace my clutch, flywheel and throwout bearing.  How hard is it?  I’ve taken my skid off to replace the transmission mount and stabilizer so I know there is some weight to it.  4 Wheel Parts would do it for about 600-800 bucks. The part is about $100-125. I really want to do it myself but if I get stumped on something I want to do it right or is it pretty straight forward? Clutch adjustment and torque specs for all the bolts, etc.  Any advice or a good shop around here would be greatly appreciated.

I responded

1) if you do a locker do the front first because its helps the tires grab and lift you over the obstacle vs pushing you into it

2) lockers never hurt in all honesty

3) personally I would go for a winch first because if lockers can't get you out a winch will may take longer for recovery

4) I would have another person who's done a clutch around in a cj they are fairly easy and can take a day for an experienced duo or longer depending tools like a transmission jack
