Off Road Podcast Episode 143 - Just Differentials

Welcome to the Off Road Podcast. I'm your host, Aaron. Today we will be exploring the off road world-- whether you like crawling up rock ledges or enjoy exploring the backroads with your family. Stay with us to find out events in your area, off road news, and topics to interest every guy & girl who craves the outdoors as seen through the windshield. I am here with my co-hosts Steve and Cameron. Ben is out tonight, how are you guys doing tonight?

Anyone done anything exciting?

  • Aaron - Still nothing off road.  Just had a birthday though and got some off road related patches and some $$ that I’ll turn into off road related gear!

  • Steve - Just did some shooting.

  • Cameron- Got back from Jeep Beach Jam in Panama City Beach with the crew. A week on the beach with friends and jeep activities. Came back with a Jeep full of goodies. Beadlocks (sorry Jeep Joe!), battery tray, ARB bag, JCR Bottle opener. Purchased Poison Spyder fender flares this morning.

Hello, Listening to the last episode and you finished the torsion lift on your Ranger. I have a Ranger, but held off on the torsion lift as I read it strains the cv joints on the front axle shafts, and you need an alignment after. So far I've done a body lift and F150 rear springs, with an Explorer 8.8 axle. The 33s clear the rear no problem, but rub under minimal flex up front. What's your experience with the Ranger rubbing as you didn't mention the size of the Suburban wheels. Thank you for your time, Brandon from Spokane

Steve’s Reply:

Hello Brandon. The 1st question. CV shafts and alignment. Any time you change something on the front end that has to do with suspension and steering you should do an alignment. If you lift the front end to high you can indeed put the CV shafts at to great of an angle.  I have not measured mine, but they don't seem to be significantly more than what I started with. I am running 265/75/16's. I believe they are only about a 32" tall tire.  If I turn lock to lock they rub on the inside just a little. Hope that helps Steve.

Tech tip:

With today's computer programs a parts guy does not have the chance to really learn what is interchangeable other than what the computer says.  Even at the the dealer. So if doing a performance swap or upgrade be sure to do some research. Forums and clubs are a great place to gain such information.  Check their tech pages and other document posts for good tidbits of information. Remember to save part numbers for things that may be part of something else.
