Fair warning this will be a long email and I don’t expect you to read it all on the air but you guys were really speaking my language this past episode.

First off, love listening to the show in the shop and as I drive a lot during the day for work.  Second, shame on you Aaron for taking your truck to a shop for a dirty MAF sensor! Just busting your chops. You’d think a shop working on a pretty well built rig would realize the owner probably knows better than to pay $500 for a MAF sensor!!!!

I’m a big Ford guy, having had a lifted Bronco II on 32’s, a ’96 Explorer Sport (31x10.50’s BFG A/T, spring swap, custom shackles, torsion twist), a 1997 F150 (265/75r16 Goodyear Duratrac’s, torsion twist again), and now an ’02 Explorer (4” lift, 265/75r16’s Duratrac’s, 3.73’s, limited slip, 4.6L). I feel your pain on those torsion keys for sure. Every time I’ve worked on a Ford, other than just simple regular maintenance, it’s been abundantly clear to me that “wow, no Ford engineer has ever actually worked on a vehicle, EVER!”.

I’m also a bit of a tire nerd. Steve, I assume your Ranger has the 8.8 rear axle which is actually a really good stock axle for a vehicle that size. Does that have 3.55’s or 3.73’s? Some of the FX4 models even had 4.10 gears. Does it have the factory limited slip? If it has 3.73 gears get the Duratrac in the 265/75r16 load range C, they will be perfect, I promise.  Whenever I buy new tires I actually build a spreadsheet with cost, tire weight, load rating, tread depth, etc.

I live in eastern Iowa so unfortunately we don’t get to do a ton of off-roading, my kids are getting a little older and my wife is definitely getting more involved in wanting to take overlanding trips and things like that. We went to the sand dunes in Michigan last year and my family loved it so we are headed back up there with the Explorer again at the end of May and in June sometime. The Explorer does really well on the sand.

I also understood exactly what you guys were talking about the backwards AR15 hammer spring. I recently did a series of videos on my YouTube channel on my custom AR build and my DIY cheap trigger upgrades and I did the exact same thing.

Yeah I like guns too, a lot. I’d encourage you guys to definitely check out my YouTube channel, Hawkeye Skunk Works. I do lots of gun and auto videos, several of the videos have been chronicling my Explorer build lately. I’m on Facebook under Hawkeye Skunk Works too, I have a closed group which if like a tech forum and I have a public page where I just post all the stuff I’ve been up to. I’m also on Twitter and Instagram, you guys actually follow me on Instagram so I’m sure you’ve seen my Explorer on there. I’ve also been filming the mild build I’m going on my wife’s WJ.

Anyway, I could keep going but maybe you guys would want to have me on as a guest host sometime to talk Fords or guns or anything 4x4 related, I like anything with a motor. I’d love to talk your ears off for a couple episodes!  I attached a few photos of the rigs, past and present.
