Hey Nick,

Recently got into listening to your podcast and have to say I love it. Your diverse crew of experts is great and I am very impressed by their use of common sense and logic to discuss all topics of training, political, laws, etc. It is a refreshing voice in a subject that often swings towards the extremes of either side. I have been going through your back catalog on iTunes and YouTube and it is both educational and thoroughly entertaining.

I have been finishing my MBA & living in Paris for the last 4 months, lost several people from my school in the attacks, and will be returning to the States in late December. I have been trying to educate myself on firearms ownership and the laws and regulations of my locality as well as on the current issues, the news media has not been kind as i'm sure you are aware of. Podcasts and Youtube have been a great asset but the forums I read have seemed to be less reliable/ consistent in content, many devolving into screaming about laws and opinions rather than staying on topic.

To give you a bit of background, I live in Westchester County, NY and currently work in NYC in the financial industry. I've been shooting since I was 12 in the Boy Scouts, never have owned a gun, & my girlfriend is also interested in shooting too. This past year I got into hunting; archery because of the restrictive laws around my county. As you may know, next to NYC, Westchester is one of the hardest places in the state to get a pistol permit, saying nothing to getting a conceal carry permit. Throw in the SAFE Act & other major restrictions to ownership and usage it is a legal minefield and I am terrified to even start the process.

I know that I will be inheriting 1 lever action rifle & 2 shotguns from my grandfather in the near future, they are older hunting guns, and I am interested in owning a handgun and getting into the firearms training community. Would you do an episode focused on living and carrying in highly restrictive counties/ cities? I know Jeff is in/ around Philly and operates in my metro area from time to time, so I'm sure he has some great insight on the topic.

Thanks again and please continue to make these great shows.

Removing Emotions From Guns/Gear

Email From Listeners:

I suffer from chronic pain and I'm under the care of a pain management specialist.  I was in a major crushing accident 6 years ago where I broke my lower spine in 5 vertebrae, my neck in 2 vertebrae, and my hip.  After 6 surgeries, lots of titanium and screws, too many procedures to count, and years of physical therapy, there is not much else that can be done.  I will be on pain medication for the rest of my life unless some new procedure is developed.

I'm on a couple of different narcotic pain meds, the strongest of which (100 mcg/hr Fentanyl pain patches) is ten times stronger than Morphine.  The other narcotic medication is for break through pain, but I try my best not to take it because of the damage it causes to the liver.

Being a concealed carrying citizen, I realize that I am responsible for every bullet that exits my barrel.  But if I was involved in a justified self-defense shooting, could a prosecutor use my pain medication against me?  I have been on these meds for almost 7 years, so I have no side effects such as dizziness, drowsiness, blurred vision, cognitive impairment, etc.  As a matter of fact, I am a very active competitive shooter, I drive a vehicle daily, and I fly airplanes.  My pain management doctor knows that I carry a firearm and that I'm a pilot but has never cautioned me about doing these things on meds.  I am confident in my mental and physical abilities when carrying, but I know how criminal prosecutors can be.

I took a class from Massad Ayoob last year and asked about the fact that a blow to the face or head could lead to another cervical spine fracture quite easily.  He told me that since I am more likely to suffer serious bodily harm or death from a punch to the jaw then I have the right to use deadly force before your average person based on "disparity of force".  I didn't think to ask him about the pain medication at the time, so I'm glad the other Practically Tactical listener brought it up.

Thanks for the great podcast and relative information.  Stay vigilant.

  • Actual Def. adj. (of a person or their actions) showing skillful planning; planning at an end beyond the immediate action. Calculated Strategic

When you look at the industry, what is tactical?

People’s answers:

  • Ryan  Keeping your head about you and mainly just not being a fucking DERPER
  • Arturo Of or relating to a maneuver or plan of action to expediently gain a desired end or advantage. It's an adjective, not a noun or verb.
  • Ancel execution of a well thought out plan of action..
  • Tore  When used to describe a piece of gear, it indicates the type of use it is designed for; battle, combat, fighting etc.
  • Mike Filling a specialized (non-standard) role. That is all.
  • Mark  of or relating to an action taken in pursuit of a military objective
  • Jeff Tactical is tactics used to solve a problem.  Tactical is marketing.
  • Julia IMO Tactical has to do more with what you can do with what equipment you have. What works in your given situation. Its different for everyone. I cant use one grip on my gun because of where I live?

How can people be better at being tactical?

AA Reports - Send Them To Me!

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Main Segment

1. Assuming the info in the cch class is sufficient, and not seeking further training. (People get their permit, holster a gun, or throw it in their glove compartment, and "feel" safer and more confident.)

2.Not spending the money on proper "gear" for their carry gun.

(i.e. Buying the crappy holster because it's cheaper. Not wearing a belt, or clothing that supports their carry gun. Carrying their carry gun in their pocket without any type of pocket holster.)

3.Choosing a carry gun based on size and ease of concealment only.

(People don't have time for the inconvenience of choosing the proper gun, and dressing around the proper gun for them.)

4.Expecting a gun store salesman to guide them to the "perfect" carry gun.

(people that don't take time, or don't know to do their homework, are satisfied with listening to someone who "sounds" like he knows what he's talking about.)

  1. Carry in a position that makes it extremely hard to get the gun out during a hands on altercation.

6.Married to their gear. Un willing to change and see that there may be a better option available

7.Adjusting their cc gun while in public.

(Some new carriers tend to be rather nervous when carrying, and constantly check to make sure the firearm is still concealed.)

8.Training with their full size gun on the range, and never training with the keltec .380 they keep in their pocket every day.

9.Not researching reciprocity laws of travel destinations. Including states they may travel through to get there. (The news has had stories of cc holders going on vacation, and getting cited or arrested for a seemingly "legal" carry gun. I have a personal friend that crossed the Canadian border, forgot he had his firearm, and spent three days in jail bc of it.)

10.Never training on how to GET TO THE GUN.

(Even people that go to the range often, and are confident with their accuracy, and manipulation, rarely practice getting their firearm unconcealed. Accuracy only counts if you can get the gun out in time.)

11.Not considering what happens after using their firearm.

12.Do not vet their CPL class instructor. All instructors are not created equal. Even if it is the "same" class being taught

13.Do not take further training outside of guns. Ie less lethal. When all you have is a hammer every problem looks like a nail.

14.Not testing their defensive ammo at varying distance.

15.Not having the right mindset that would fix 1-11, and more.

So for our first game of the night we’re going to play, RAPID FIRE. The rules of this segment are simple: I will ask you a series of questions and you answer yes or no..there are no explanations allowed...simply a yes or no. Here we go, are you ready?

Rob:

  • Is 9mm better than .40S&W and 45 ACP?
  • Is the Springfield Line of handguns better than the Glock line?
  • Is the AR15 better than the AK47/74?
  • Is firearm precision more important than speed?
  • Is a rifle better for home defense than a handgun?

Double Tap:

It is time for...Double Tap...Kinda.. So instead of having a question that is answered with a YES or NO, you will answer these questions with the first answer that pops in your head. You are still not allowed to explain...just the first answer that comes to mind…Ready?

  • What is your favorite handgun?
  • What is your favorite rifle?
  • What is your favorite handgun?
  • What is your favorite caliber?
  • Name a trainer that you look up to?
  • If you had to pick one, would it be an SBR or a Suppressed Rifle?
  • If you could build an AR in any caliber other than 5.56, what caliber would it be?
  • What is your most wanted handgun to shoot that you haven’t yet?
  • What is your most wanted rifle to shoot that you haven’t yet?
