Week in Review:

Ryan: Broke my  toilet

Weerd:

Drink: Pearse Lyons Distillery

Main Topic: Unusual Law Enforcement Handguns

(Thanks to listener Mike S. for providing the list)

Our list of “unusual” law enforcement handguns are those that are generally not Glock, Sig Sauer or Smith & Wesson (the largest in market share) in 9 mm, .40 S&W or .45 ACP. However, if either brand is used in a caliber other than those, I think it qualifies as an unusual model.

Thanks to my friend Chris McCarthy of Castle Rock, CO who helped a lot with this list.

This is not primary source information and some of it may be a little stale. Interesting nonetheless.

  • Maine State Police-HK45 with LEM trigger. Prior to that, they carried HK USP

  • NY State Police-Used to have Glock 37 in .45 GAP, have since gone to .45 ACP

  • Tennessee Highway Patrol-Glock 31 in .357 Sig. Also issues Glock 32 and possibly 33.

  • US Coast Guard: Sig P229 DAK in .40. USCG Investigative Service (like NCIS) also uses P239 DAK in .40.

  • NC State Highway Patrol: Sig P226 .357 Sig. However, there is info out there that they formerly carried the Beretta Cougar in .357 Sig.

  • VA State Police: Sig P229R DAK in .357 Sig. Transitioning to P320 in .357 Sig

  • KY State Police: Now have Glock 17. However, used to carry Glock 35, and prior to that, carried S&W 1076 (the “FBI gun”).

  • NJ State Police: Now carries G17. However, Used to carry P229 Elite in 9mm and had P228 for a while. There was a bunch of controversy with the P229 related to likely modifications their armorers were doing and ammo. There was a lawsuit against Sig. Before that, they famously carried the HK P7M13 in 9 mm.

  • FBI-We all know they have carried Glock for a while. However, the Hostage Rescue Team had/has carried Browning Hi Power for a long time. HRT also uses Springfield Operator 1911. They also issued the S&W 1076 in 10 mm after the infamous “Miami shootout”. That was a very usual gun as it’s a S&W with a frame mounted decocker.

  • Florida Highway Patrol: Glock 37 in .45 GAP

  • Hillsborough County, Florida (Tampa) Sheriff’s Office: FN FNS-9 and some 509s, but are transitioning to Glock 45.

  • Chicago PD is dependent on one’s date of hire. Newer members are restricted to striker-fired guns. However, some of the more unusual pistols approved are the Glock 41, Sig P225, P239 (I have a childhood friend who is on CPD who carries one of these-great for ladies with smaller hands), P245 (later called P220 Compact), and Sig Pro series.

  • Texas Rangers’ uniforms are not necessarily “uniform”, but must be in “Western style”. Same often carries over to firearms. Highly decorated 1911s with matching holsters and carry belts are common. Per the Texas Ranger Museum, they may carry any firearm they want so long as they qualify with it.

  • The Royal Canadian Mounted Police carry S&W 5946 that are specially engraved with a department logo. They also carry the 3953.

  • Canadian Military Police carry Sig P225. The entire Canadian military also famously carry Browning Hi Power.

  • Pennsylvania State Police Carry Sig P227 (the double stack .45 ACP). They previously carried Glock 21, and prior to that, Glock 37 in .45 GAP.

  • Delaware State Police carry Sig P229 DAK in .357 Sig.

  • Indiana State Police carry Sig P227

  • Montana Highway Patrol-Sig P229R in .357 Sig

  • Utah Highway Patrol may carry a personal weapon in 9 mm, .40 or .45 ACP, or a Glock 17. The governor’s protection detail carries G18 machine pistol!

  • US Border Patrol carries HK P2000, with USP and P2000SK also authorized.

  • US Secret Service P229 .357 Sig. They JUST announced they are transitioning to Glock 19 Gen 5 for both Special Agents and uniformed personnel.

  • US Customs HK P2000 in .40

  • Florida Wildlife Commission LE Glock 37 in .45 GAP

  • Service de police de la Ville de Montréal (SPVM) (French for Montreal Police Service) until recently used the Walther P99, but now uses the G19.

  • Tacoma, WA Kimber Pro Carry II, Pro Carry II HD, or G21, G22 or G23.

  • Rhode Island State Police carry P226R in .357 Sig (they also have the coolest state trooper uniforms ever)

  • DHS/ICE: P226R DAK, P229R DAK and P239 DAO

  • US Air Marshals P229 in .357 Sig

  • Jamestown PD in ND and the Stutsman County Sheriff’s Office (presumably in ND) all carry 1911’s.

  • New Mexico State Police M&P .357 Sig

  • Clayton, NC PD HK USP in .45 (isn’t that a HK45?), but have since switched to M&P .45

  • Whitman County, WA (near Spokane) Kimber 1911 5” barrel.

  • Charlotte, NC Beretta PX4, unknown caliber

  • Chicago Transit Police Glock 32 (.357 Sig)

  • Richmond, VA Sig Pro (AKA SP2022)

  • LAPD SWAT Kimber Custom TLE II

  • Oklahoma Highway Patrol P226 .357 Sig

  • Broken Arrow, OK SWAT: Wilson Combat 1911 CQB (wins the award for the most expensive pistol!)

  • Costa Mesa, CA PD USP 40

  • Cordova, AK HK P7M10 (.40) (second place for most expensive, but probably 1st in 2019 values), though this data is from 2010

  • Maryland State Police used to carry Beretta PX4 in .40, but I think they carry Glock 22 now.

  • Wilmington, DE was carrying S&W SW99 in .40 (American-made version of Walther P99), but have switched to M&P .40

  • Chesapeake, VA PD HK USP 40 and USP 40 Compact.

  • Wilson, NC P226 in .357 Sig

  • US Dept of Veterans Affairs Police: Beretta 92D Centurion (I think that means DAO), 92FS, and P229R DAK and P239 DAK.

  • Virginia Capitol Police Beretta PX4 .40

  • PA Fish and Boat Commission Beretta 96D DAO (.40)

  • Newport and Lincoln City, OR police depts: Springfield TRP 1911

  • Las Vegas Metro PD has a plethora of pistols to choose from: Beretta, Colt, S&W, Kimber, HK, Ruger, Glock, Para Ordnance, Unertl, Sig, Wilson Combat, Springfield or Steyr. Must be DA/SA, SA or Striker fired and a minimum of 3.5 barrel length (new recruits are given a $575 voucher for purchase). Data as of 2010.

  • Cochise County, AZ Sheriff: Colt 1911

  • Graham County, AZ, Sheriff: Springfield XD Tactical .45

I have heard it repeatedly that the advances in ammo technology have made the 9x19mm cartridge equal the .40S&W or .45acp for self defense. However, aren't the same advances in ammo technology being applied to the larger cartridges making them more potent then they ever have been before?

Shoulder Holsters

Dear Ryan,

In Ep.236 I was happy to hear some discussion about shoulder holsters

from a listener email. I'd love to hear a whole episode on that kind

of carry--cue Weerd here. I wear coat and tie daily, and I always

wanted a shoulder rig which conceals without printing below a fitted

jacket. I admit I want to be James Bond--I have a Walther PP (not

PPK--like in Dr. No), but every shoulder rig I've tried has been

bulky. How did JB do it? Is there anything on the market like that? I

imagine something with elastic rather than leather shoulder straps,

but I don't know. Love to hear what you guys think.

Love the show by the way--you two complement each other nicely!

best,

-Will

Subject: poop and carry

Message: Hi folks.

I am right handed and appendix carry to the left of my belt buckle. If the deed must be done in public the procedure is as follows:

Enter stall

About face and secure facility.

Undo buckle and lower belt before the hip.

Refasten the buckle.

Apply slight outward pressure while lowering pants and underwear to just above knee.

Sit down.

Perform.

Wipe.

Reverse procedure.

The firearm remains out of sight and secure as long as there is a slight outward pressure on the belt from your knees.

On a side note: where do you guys keep your wallet and knife? My wallet is in my left front pocket and my fixed blade knife if behind the belt at 6 o'clock, folder and cell phone in right front pocket.

Listener Doug:

I have a hypothesis about your shotgun failing to fire 3" shells.

Perhaps the chambers are a little short, and/or the shells are a little

long, just enough that the shells aren't headspacing on the rim, they

are headspacing on the front of the shell.  That could cushion the blow

of the firing pin, and cause a failure to fire.  If you are willing to

sacrifice a shell for science, cut off an inch or so of a shell, empty

out the contents, and try firing the primed shortened hull.

(Another possibility is that whatever it says on the barrels, your

shotgun is chambered for 2 3/4" shells.)

Listener Tate:

After I did my submission for "Miami vice loadout" I character had a shoulder holster. Now I'm dreaming about shoulder holsters. If I remember right you carry one correct? I'm wanting to get one, I'm thinking that I really want a leather harness but with a kydex holster. Any recommendations on where to look?

Episode for Daniel: Guns of Sears!

’m road-tripping from Richmond-by-God Virginia to NYC this summer for a Yankee’s game. Now, that means I’m traveling through Maryland, Pennsylvania, and of course, into New York State, and I typically like to at least have my subcompact 9mm with me, on the road.

I know none of these states honors my Virginia concealed carry permit (at least I don’t think they do), so how can I legally transport a pistol? If I can’t legally conceal, does that mean it has to be visible? Or, is that worse? Does it have to be unloaded, locked in a container, and in my trunk (which sort of defeats the purpose)?

Or, like transporting 400 cases of Coors from Texarkana to Atlanta, can it simply not be done, while staying on the right side of the local constabulary?

Discuss!

Main Topic: Ammunition with Alex from Ammo.com!

The online sale of ammunition has been happening for a long time now, and there are quite a few suppliers out there. We are joined today by Alex from Ammo.com, one of those suppliers, to tell us a little bit about the industry.

  1. How did you get started with ammo.com?

  2. How saturated is the market and are there places that companies can innovate?

  3. What are some obstacles for the consumer when looking to purchase ammunition online? Some people who have always purchased in-store can be a bit hesitant to purchase ammo online; how do you convince them?

  4. How does ammo.com handle shipping? Ammunition is very heavy. Are shipping costs a challenge?

  5. Caliber selection

  6. Some people choose to buy ammunition a single box at a time, when there could be massive savings by buying it per 1000 round case (or even 500). How do you convince those potential customers that buying in bulk is better for them in the long run?

  7. How do you see the future shaping up for online ammunition sellers?

  8. What can we expect to see from ammo.com in the coming years?

Hey fellas,

https://www.colt.com/detail-page/night-cobra-38spl-32

https://www.kimberamerica.com/k6s-da-sa-3-1

Been a listener for a while now and I have a question. What do you guys think would be best for carry. I’m thinking of buying a revolver for my everyday carry. I think I just prefer one over autos. Just because of the reliability, history and cool factor. But the 3 guns I’m choosing are either the Ruger sp101 3” or 4”, the kimber k6s or the colt cobra.

Here are my theories for these revolvers.

The Ruger (which I’m leaning more to) because it has 357 capability,it has a hammer for longer range shots, longer barrel length options and it can be customized as well as had more aftermarket parts availavle(holsters, wood panels, sights)

The kimber because if it’s trigger hands down,357 capability and is 6shot. I know it’s coming out with a 3” but it may be hard to obtain.

Cobra because 6shot, hammer and trigger.

I will note that I now pocket carry the lcr. I just now want something a little bigger that is more potent and I can carry on my hip rather than pocket.

Let me know what you guys think.

                    Spencer

P.S. Have to add the king cobra 3” 357 now too

Doug:

A little late, I know, but here goes:

Handgun: 1900 Swiss Luger (that's almost cheating, but not quite), in

.30 Luger.  I actually own a low three digit serial Swiss 1900 Luger,

and it is a great gun-- accurate, powerful (~400 FPE) and quick to

reload.  One could make a pretty good case that in 1900, it was the best

pistol in the world.  If the FMJ bullet hits bone, the target is going

down, so I would aim for the pelvis.  My 1900 self would also experiment

with filing down the nose of the bullets a tad for make-shift

softpoints.  As a backup, a Webley Mk1 in .455 with owls-head grips.

Rifle: 1896 Swedish Mauser.  I own one of those too, and when my eyes

were younger, my 5 round groups averaged just a hair over an inch at 100

yards.

Shotgun: if money was no object, I would pick a Holland & Holland

Paradox in 12 gauge-- it's a first-rate shotgun *and* a very good

rifle.  I'd load one barrel with buck, and one with a solid, and any

enemy within ~200 yards would be in serious trouble.

Knife: Arkansas toothpick on the belt, and a Sgian-Dubh tucked into the

boot.

Clothes?  I think I'd go for the Bat Masterson look.  Including a good

stout cane, which would be very handy, especially in towns that didn't

permit firearms to be openly carried.

BTW, CCI still loads .22 WRF, and I think Winchester does a run every

few years.

Regards,

Doug

Listener Email: From Spencer “ your last discussion about pocket carry for the LCR made me realize you must not have seen the excellent ‘boot grips’ Ruger sells for them for $30 on their site. They aren’t quite as comfortable as the regular grips, but they are still Hogue's with the shock-absorbing gel strip in them, and are very comfortable.

I use these on my LCR in 9mm, which recoils about the same as the 357 setup I used to carry. You do lose a place for your pinky finger with these grips, but the gun is still very controllable and it fits in places the bulkier standard grip makes difficult.

BTW, I know that 357 sounds cooler, but 9mm in a snubby is a much more efficient way to get the same (or better) results. Take a look at Ballistics By The Inch sometime if you want to be seriously depressed about how bad 357 in snubbies sucks.

Since my regular carry gun (FNS-9 Compact) is in 9mm, and the LCR sometimes does backup duty, the compatibility made a lot of sense for me. Since it indexes off of the case mouth, you don’t need moon clips to shoot, and with nickel-plated defense ammo, you don’t really need them for ejection either, at least not for the first few cylinders.”

Week in Review:

Weerd:

Ryan: -Ripcord Speedloader

-Lucky Gunner Lounge Pocket Pistol Project

-Speedloaders

Listener T:

Canik TP9SF now Massachusetts legal. Thoughts and opinions? Sootch did a review and MAC put it through the gauntlet. And Noir did a first rounds video. Thank you.

Listener L on the Taurus Spectrum:

Thanks Weerd for reading my email on the last show.

Here's my little video on that Spectrum. Not a review per se. Now over 320

rounds with no FTE's and FTF's. Guys, I understand the fears on quality

control on Tauruses. That's pretty much related to guns made in Brazil,

meeting high demands of the market. I've suffered that too trying to get

accessories and parts. I had to wait 3 months once for a magazine for my

24/7 pro. That is ridiculous. All of that because the mag would come from

Brazil. The Spectrum is an all "made in america gun". I have a S&W

Bodyguard 380, a Ruger LCP II, a Kahr CW 380. The only I really don't care

much is the S&W. The grip kinda hurt the web of my hand. Love the Kahr and

the LCP II. But I noticed my follow up  shots with the Spectrum a little

more faster, because it doesn't snap. I mean, it's just a push. You might

find the trigger a little on the heavy side, but after 100 rounds it did

get better, or I just got used to it. The Trigger on the LCP II kinda

scares me. The pre 95% cocked hammer is an accident waiting to happen. The

first LCP was pretty much a half way cocked hammer version (keltec

inspired). So, no need to be afraid of the Spectrum. Mr. Enabler (Weerd)

you got me into a PM45 and is almost getting me into a LCR in 357. Please

be kind with me, because I have two reasons to make a move. I have my

birthday this month and Christmas coming in next.

Love your show guys.

Drink Segment:    I’m having a Corpse Reviver number 2

This drink calls for Gin, Triple Sec,  Lillet Blanc and Lemon juice all in equal proportions,  and an absinthe wash.

But mine I made it with gin, Grand Marnier, Lillet Blanc, and Pernod.

Gran marnier is very similar to Triple Sec, and pretty darn close to Cointreau,  as well as Curacao. So if you see a cocktail with any one of those you can do a simple substitution for what you have in your cabinet.  There might be some subtle differences, but you’ll be close enough to know if you like the drink or not.

Absinthe is an Anise Liquor,  and that flavor is SO strong that really all the anise liquors and Liqureurs taste pretty much the same,  so when you don’t want to buy that expensive bottle of Absithe, you could use Penod, Ouzo, or Sambuca.

There are a few others,  that might be a bit more risky,  like Jagermeister or Campari for other Amaro style liqueurs,  but that must be done with caution, tho these drinks all have a similer bitter-sweet quality that while those substitutions might not re-create the cocktail,  it might behave similar enough to get a different, but delicious drink.
