Week in Review:

Ryan: -Checked out a local company to me, RPS Tactical. The owner Rob and his associates make some great products including an innovative holster system that uses industrial strength velcro and it holds it very securely.

Weerd: Not a whole lot.  I was doing some yard work, but I was carrying my LCR in my pocket, not in an ankle holster and shorts like TJ.

Daniel:  It looks like Big Horn Armory is about to branch into pistols.  They have filed a patent application for a Southpaw-friendly M1911 that accepts standard M1911 magazines.  The slide stop and magazine release remain in the standard position.  However, the ejector, extractor, and ejection port have been relocated to the opposite sides of the frame and slide.

I also rediscovered a neat webpage concerning the early days of the FBI.  Of particular interest is the section concerning gunsmith Hyman S. Lebman and the converted M1911 machinepistols he made for Baby Face Nelson and John Dillinger.

We have done a few of these episodes before, but not in this much detail. Daniel deserves all the credit for researching and setting up these categories and guns, and we have so many that there will be a Part Four sometime after NRA show!!!

We are going break this up into multiple categories:
a) Guns that were unpopular and didn't sell (Beretta 9000, Beretta 90-Two)

b) Guns that didn't work, or work reliably (Colt All-American 2000, Kimball Arms .30 Carbine)

c) Guns where the basic concept didn't fly (COP Derringer, S&W Model 53)

d) Guns that just never got off the ground for legal reasons (Colt Pocket 9 & Colt Pony)

e) Guns that just never got off the ground for business or technical reasons (Kimber KPD, Mitchell Alpha)

FYI: The two previous episodes concerning this topic can be found here. http://firearmsradio.tv/handgun-radio/?tag=design

  • Checked out this cool single shot .22 LR my neighbor picked up. He said it was a Hawes break action single shot that has a great sight picture, great trigger and grip angle. It would be fun to sit there with a brick of 22 and a bunch of cans and steel plates downrange and just plink all day.

  • I am happy to announce an upcoming project with Bayside Custom Gunworks! We spoke with Chris, the owner of Bayside Custom Gunworks a few episodes back, and we decided to do a project. Chris will be taking a Model 60 that I have and making the “Ultimate Concealed Carry Snubby Revolver”. We will be documenting the whole project on the Handgun Radio Facebook page and Handgun Radio Discussion Group so be sure to go over there and like the pages for more information!!!

-Shot USPSA practice - RMR’d G17 for carry optics.

-Took trauma management class from local swat medic.

-Had girlfriend try various handguns at Anthony Arms in Pittsburgh, she ended up settling on a full size M&P in 9mm.  Despite having bad experiences at the range in the past, range staff was courteous and fellow shooters were as safe as they typically are at a public range.  Finally shot my Kel Tec P32.  It was awesome.

-28th birthday on April 8th.

Weerd-  I was in Florida, and I took my Father in Law shooting at Shoot Straight in Ft. Meyers Florida (https://shoot-straight.com/) Really good facility.   The indoor pistol range was well lit, VERY well ventilated, and they had complimentary eyes and ears (which I was a dummy and forgot mine).

He did really well!  And was right to the point,  ended up only shooting about 15 rounds

For you beer lovers this place is AWESOME!   They have a huge recipe book, and you pick what you want,  then they tell you what you need to do, but you touch everything and make your beer,  then after it ferments you bottle it up and cart it home.   It’s really a good deal, and the beers come out really good….plus you can say you made it yourself...even if that isn’t exactly true.

  • Picked up a nice Triple-K holster and some .451” roundballs for the .44 1851 Pietta Colt Navy at Cabela’s today! Finally I can get some shooting in, unless the temperature continues to stay below zero as it has been all week.
  • Saw some really cool handguns and rifles at the Cabelas gun gallery in Scarbourough, ME during our trip.  I got to handle a beautiful Remington Model 8 (I don’t know why I really like that rifle, but I do.) and also looked at some beautiful Colt and S&W revolvers that they had for sale.  Most were in somewhat obsolete or hard-to-find calibers such as .32 S&W or .38 S&W. There were a few vintage Steyr pistols and some odd looking Olympic target pistols chambered in .22 Short.  It is interesting to see what sorts of grips they put on some of those competition target pistols.
  • I am REALLY excited about the new Remington R-51 semi-automatic 9mm pistol.  I think the gun is really pretty revolutionary as it takes an old design concept that hasn’t been used in a very long time and revamps it for today’s marketplace.  The pistol uses a locking system designed by John Pederson and used by the Remington Model 51 pistol that was produced between 1918 and 1927 and was chambered in .32 ACP or .380 ACP.  The locking system allows for a fixed barrel like in a blowback pistol, but using a large, service size caliber that often just isn’t feasible in a blowback locking system.  I have fired the old Remington Model 51 and it is a very VERY fine handgun, and I cannot wait to see what Remington has done to update the design. Now if I could just convince Colt to make the Model 1903 Pocket Hammerless again……
