Main Topic: Don’t Do That!

Listener Mark brought up things NOT to do with a gun, and we arent talking the ones we talk about constantly such as not violating the safety rules, etc. We are going to discuss some of the less obvious ones.

-Prying the sideplate off a Smith & Wesson (you TAP the side of the grip frame to remove it)

-Loosening the strain screw on a revolver

-Wire Brush on a blued gun

- +p loads in guns not rated for it

-Mixing up the 7.62 cartridges  (.30 Borchardt, .30 Luger, .30 Mauser, and .30 Tok)    See also .38 ACP and .38 Super

-Don’t shoot .38 Special in your .357 and then shoot really high pressure .357’s without cleaning out the carbon rings from the chambers.

-Leaving corrosive powder on your gun,  and just assuming that military surplus ammo is non-corrosive

-Slamming the crane on a revolver

Message: I am a long time listener and supporter of the Firearms Radio Network. I listen to all of the Handgun Radio episodes and recently I was listening to the episode on the P365 SAS. After listening to your show for a long time, I have learned that Weerd is a big fan of the Kahr PM9 as I am myself. I recently purchased the Bullseye Sight for my PM9. After installation and testing of my new sight I found that my mid-50s eyes didn’t pickup the sight as clearly as I had hoped. I eventually had to just replace the aged 3-dot night sights with a new set. Thank you and keep up the good work.

Subject: The "OTHER" handguns

Message: Hello,

I would love to hear some conversations around the "other" handguns that tend to be overlooked and under-appreciated... Derringers and Single-Shot handguns. I own a plethora of handguns of the semi-auto and revolver varieties, but am very interested in looking at things like the Bond Arms derringers and the T/C Contender single-shots.

Do you have experience in these spaces? What are some of the top options? What are some of the less-well-known pieces? Classic brands and models?

Thanks!

Subject: Defensive handgun use while playing guitar in church.

Message: Hi, Ryan.

I really enjoy your podcast. I’ve been listening for years, and always get a lot out of the show.I wanted to respond to Andy’s question from the most recent episode, regarding a defensive gun use in church, specifically while playing guitar. I think I can speak with some experience on the matter. Unlike you, I don’t play in bars, but I have been playing guitar in church for many years, and have been carrying concealed for decades.

Sadly, in our society today, our churches aren’t as safe as they used to be. I would not set foot inside a church without being armed, and wouldn’t consider attending a church where firearms are forbidden. My church has 2 services every Sunday, and I play at both services.First I want to cover how I dress. It’s imperative that I can clear my cover garment and draw the weapon with one hand, because having a guitar strapped to your chest inhibits the support hand from clearing the garment.I carry a 4” S&W M&P 9mm with 15+1 inside the waistband just behind my right hip. I have a 17 round magazine on my left hip.I usually wear slacks or Docker type pants, and an untucked square tail shirt. In cooler weather I might have a tucked shirt and a sweater vest. It looks neat, and I’ve never been made. Only a very few people in the church know that I am carrying. If I ever needed to draw my weapon in church, I seriously doubt I would ever need a high speed draw. First of all, I’m one of a handful of people facing the back of the church where the door is. The entire congregation is sitting with their backs to the door, but I’m facing the back and in a slightly elevated position. If some evil person came in with a rifle or shotgun, or a sword or whatever, I’m probably going to see him as soon as he comes in. And he’s going to be looking at all those people’s backs. Meanwhile I can easily draw my weapon with my right hand, and my draw will be concealed by that big wooden box hanging on my chest. At that point, I can either get my support hand in place above the guitar and start shooting, or just bend forward, drop the guitar and go to work. I hope that helps. Keep up the good work.

Subject: Carrying while musicing.

Message: Hi Guys,

It was a good discussion regarding carrying while performing. I also am a church musician (bass player). I've often considered the special circumstances when carrying with a guitar, or bass on. Also, in my situations, I also have in ear monitors on while performing, which complete blocks all outside sound. So at that point, I'm pretty much out of the loop, unless I can really visually ID a threat. I figure I would toss down the instrument if I thought there was a real threat. There's a higher chance a threat would occur not during the music set.

I prefer to simply carry my XDs 9 (because that's just the single stack I have), strong side IWB. I wear a black undershirt to reduce the contrast between gun and undershirt. I wear jeans, and an untucked button down. I have successfully concealed with dress slacks and button down tucked in shirt IWB, by just laying the shirt over the belt clips, no one the wiser.

Churches are permissive in Pennsylvania, and we have had some attacks on houses of worship to worry about (Tree of Life Synagogue, and another terror threat that was stopped). I think (not sure), that the most likely threat would be like a domestic incident. I don't know, that would be complicated and difficult to deal with.

Anyways, I love the show, and I play a Ernie Ball, MusicMan StingRay5 into a Mesa Subway rig.

Hello. Really enjoy the show. Listen all the time. You asked if any one out there was LAPD. I was in the 2000s. So the not super current but I imagine much is the same. They issued us Glock 22 .40 ( not the best gun). After the academy you could carry any of the other models provided you qualified with them. I quickly bought a Glock 21 .45. We had to buy our own back up gun and shoot a special BUG Qual with it. Mine was a J frame with a hammer but LAPD armory filed the SA seat off to make DAOnly. Still carry it m; carried it last night. Our . 38 special load was the Spear GD 135 Short Barrel load that you carry and the .45 load was the Federal .45 HST that weird uses. Hope that helps.

Good afternoon gentlemen of the Handgun Radio Podcast.

Have you thought about practicing specific defensive situations you may find yourself in on a regular basis, but may be outside of the typical training regimen? For instance, I know Ryan is a fellow musician. Have you thought about employing your firearm while playing your guitar? How would you practice for that? I am a worship leader at our small church and play guitar fairly regularly. I’ve thought about what I would have to do, but don’t have a beater guitar to use as a prop at the range. Interested to hear your thoughts and other scenarios that aren’t typically found in a standard class.

Very respectfully,

Andy

P.S. I just bought my first wheelgun, a 3” SP101 in .357 magnum and I LOVE it. Shooting .38SPL WCs through it is a dream. Where have these rotary handguns been my whole life!?! Any suggestions for holsters/upgrades, etc would be appreciated.

Message: Dear Ryan & Weer’d,

I just want to thank you both very much for Handgun Radio. The show’s easy conversation and gun-nerd topics make for real listening enjoyment. I also enjoy the deep dive discussions with Daniel Watters and other guests, as well as the drink segment. I currently live in Ciudad Juarez, Chihuahua and greatly appreciate the quality gun nerd time.

While Mexico has some great gun control, a citizen can in fact purchase a firearm for home protection. They have one gun store in the country, on a military base in CDMX. It’s not really that bad, though, they can ship your gun to the nearest military base. I have the pdf catalog offering from the Mexican military if you want to check it out.

Listener Spencer:

Hey guys,

I just wanted to follow up on this (ancient) email since I was biting my

tongue the whole time Weerd was going on about carrying moon clips for the

9mm LCR.

As mentioned below, you only need moon clips to extract, and if you use

nickel plated ammo even that isn’t a requirement. The 9mm LCR spaces off the

case mouth, just like a pistol does. If you look down the cylinder you can

see the small ridge it uses in every bore.

Since I wrote this email I've carried it almost every day, since it's what I

drop in my pants when I go to the mailbox or just out for a walk. I keep the

gun loaded with a moon clip, but my reloads are all speed strips. I use the

32 ACP speed-strips, since the smaller diameter holes keep the rimless 9mm

held in tightly.

When I shoot this gun at the range I always start with shooting through the

moon clip, and the 2 speed-strips just to keep in practice, and I've never

had any issues with ejection of the loose rounds. You just tilt the gun back

a bit and rap the butt on your palm and they fall right out. You probably

should keep the gun cleaned to make this easier, but as I mentioned if the

cases are nickel-plated, I'd be surprised if you have any issues.

Also, in reference to the speed loader episode a while back, I do have some

of the S.L. Variant speed loaders that I got from the only US importer I'm

aware of, Bobby Mac's (link below). However they have had the same web page

up promising new stock 'any day now' for years now. I did email him a few

years back and he said there was no waiting list or anything, but couldn’t

say if he was ever getting more in.

It's a real shame you can’t get these in the US anymore, since they are

easily the best speed loaders I've every tried. If you want to try a couple

of them out I would be happy to loan you some for review, so long as they

make it back to me at some point.

Thanks for the podcast,

Spencer

Ryan: Broke my  toilet

Weerd:

Drink: Pearse Lyons Distillery

Main Topic: Unusual Law Enforcement Handguns

(Thanks to listener Mike S. for providing the list)

Our list of “unusual” law enforcement handguns are those that are generally not Glock, Sig Sauer or Smith & Wesson (the largest in market share) in 9 mm, .40 S&W or .45 ACP. However, if either brand is used in a caliber other than those, I think it qualifies as an unusual model.

Thanks to my friend Chris McCarthy of Castle Rock, CO who helped a lot with this list.

This is not primary source information and some of it may be a little stale. Interesting nonetheless.

  • Maine State Police-HK45 with LEM trigger. Prior to that, they carried HK USP

  • NY State Police-Used to have Glock 37 in .45 GAP, have since gone to .45 ACP

  • Tennessee Highway Patrol-Glock 31 in .357 Sig. Also issues Glock 32 and possibly 33.

  • US Coast Guard: Sig P229 DAK in .40. USCG Investigative Service (like NCIS) also uses P239 DAK in .40.

  • NC State Highway Patrol: Sig P226 .357 Sig. However, there is info out there that they formerly carried the Beretta Cougar in .357 Sig.

  • VA State Police: Sig P229R DAK in .357 Sig. Transitioning to P320 in .357 Sig

  • KY State Police: Now have Glock 17. However, used to carry Glock 35, and prior to that, carried S&W 1076 (the “FBI gun”).

  • NJ State Police: Now carries G17. However, Used to carry P229 Elite in 9mm and had P228 for a while. There was a bunch of controversy with the P229 related to likely modifications their armorers were doing and ammo. There was a lawsuit against Sig. Before that, they famously carried the HK P7M13 in 9 mm.

  • FBI-We all know they have carried Glock for a while. However, the Hostage Rescue Team had/has carried Browning Hi Power for a long time. HRT also uses Springfield Operator 1911. They also issued the S&W 1076 in 10 mm after the infamous “Miami shootout”. That was a very usual gun as it’s a S&W with a frame mounted decocker.

  • Florida Highway Patrol: Glock 37 in .45 GAP

  • Hillsborough County, Florida (Tampa) Sheriff’s Office: FN FNS-9 and some 509s, but are transitioning to Glock 45.

  • Chicago PD is dependent on one’s date of hire. Newer members are restricted to striker-fired guns. However, some of the more unusual pistols approved are the Glock 41, Sig P225, P239 (I have a childhood friend who is on CPD who carries one of these-great for ladies with smaller hands), P245 (later called P220 Compact), and Sig Pro series.

  • Texas Rangers’ uniforms are not necessarily “uniform”, but must be in “Western style”. Same often carries over to firearms. Highly decorated 1911s with matching holsters and carry belts are common. Per the Texas Ranger Museum, they may carry any firearm they want so long as they qualify with it.

  • The Royal Canadian Mounted Police carry S&W 5946 that are specially engraved with a department logo. They also carry the 3953.

  • Canadian Military Police carry Sig P225. The entire Canadian military also famously carry Browning Hi Power.

  • Pennsylvania State Police Carry Sig P227 (the double stack .45 ACP). They previously carried Glock 21, and prior to that, Glock 37 in .45 GAP.

  • Delaware State Police carry Sig P229 DAK in .357 Sig.

  • Indiana State Police carry Sig P227

  • Montana Highway Patrol-Sig P229R in .357 Sig

  • Utah Highway Patrol may carry a personal weapon in 9 mm, .40 or .45 ACP, or a Glock 17. The governor’s protection detail carries G18 machine pistol!

  • US Border Patrol carries HK P2000, with USP and P2000SK also authorized.

  • US Secret Service P229 .357 Sig. They JUST announced they are transitioning to Glock 19 Gen 5 for both Special Agents and uniformed personnel.

  • US Customs HK P2000 in .40

  • Florida Wildlife Commission LE Glock 37 in .45 GAP

  • Service de police de la Ville de Montréal (SPVM) (French for Montreal Police Service) until recently used the Walther P99, but now uses the G19.

  • Tacoma, WA Kimber Pro Carry II, Pro Carry II HD, or G21, G22 or G23.

  • Rhode Island State Police carry P226R in .357 Sig (they also have the coolest state trooper uniforms ever)

  • DHS/ICE: P226R DAK, P229R DAK and P239 DAO

  • US Air Marshals P229 in .357 Sig

  • Jamestown PD in ND and the Stutsman County Sheriff’s Office (presumably in ND) all carry 1911’s.

  • New Mexico State Police M&P .357 Sig

  • Clayton, NC PD HK USP in .45 (isn’t that a HK45?), but have since switched to M&P .45

  • Whitman County, WA (near Spokane) Kimber 1911 5” barrel.

  • Charlotte, NC Beretta PX4, unknown caliber

  • Chicago Transit Police Glock 32 (.357 Sig)

  • Richmond, VA Sig Pro (AKA SP2022)

  • LAPD SWAT Kimber Custom TLE II

  • Oklahoma Highway Patrol P226 .357 Sig

  • Broken Arrow, OK SWAT: Wilson Combat 1911 CQB (wins the award for the most expensive pistol!)

  • Costa Mesa, CA PD USP 40

  • Cordova, AK HK P7M10 (.40) (second place for most expensive, but probably 1st in 2019 values), though this data is from 2010

  • Maryland State Police used to carry Beretta PX4 in .40, but I think they carry Glock 22 now.

  • Wilmington, DE was carrying S&W SW99 in .40 (American-made version of Walther P99), but have switched to M&P .40

  • Chesapeake, VA PD HK USP 40 and USP 40 Compact.

  • Wilson, NC P226 in .357 Sig

  • US Dept of Veterans Affairs Police: Beretta 92D Centurion (I think that means DAO), 92FS, and P229R DAK and P239 DAK.

  • Virginia Capitol Police Beretta PX4 .40

  • PA Fish and Boat Commission Beretta 96D DAO (.40)

  • Newport and Lincoln City, OR police depts: Springfield TRP 1911

Must be DA/SA, SA or Striker fired and a minimum of 3.5 barrel length (new recruits are given a $575 voucher for purchase). Data as of 2010.

  • Cochise County, AZ Sheriff: Colt 1911

  • Graham County, AZ, Sheriff: Springfield XD Tactical .45

I have heard it repeatedly that the advances in ammo technology have made the 9x19mm cartridge equal the .40S&W or .45acp for self defense. However, aren't the same advances in ammo technology being applied to the larger cartridges making them more potent then they ever have been before?

Shoulder Holsters

Dear Ryan,

In Ep.236 I was happy to hear some discussion about shoulder holsters

from a listener email. I'd love to hear a whole episode on that kind

of carry--cue Weerd here. I wear coat and tie daily, and I always

wanted a shoulder rig which conceals without printing below a fitted

jacket. I admit I want to be James Bond--I have a Walther PP (not

PPK--like in Dr. No), but every shoulder rig I've tried has been

bulky. How did JB do it? Is there anything on the market like that? I

imagine something with elastic rather than leather shoulder straps,

but I don't know. Love to hear what you guys think.

Love the show by the way--you two complement each other nicely!

best,

-Will
