HGR 057 - A Discussion with Massad Ayoob

HGR 057 - A Discussion with Massad Ayoob Hello and welcome to Handgun Radio! I’m your host Ryan Michad from the wilds of Central Maine, and this is your home for all the news, information and discussion in the handgunning world.

This week, I had the great pleasure of speaking with Massad Ayoob about his career & experiences as a Law Enforcement Officer & industry professional, along with his training and writing endeavors.

Brought to you by the Firearms Radio Network

Week in Review:

Ryan: Not much going on this week, but I do want to let you all know how the LCP experiment is going. As you all know from last week’s show, I switched from carrying my trusty S&W Model 60 in .38 Special in a Galco pocket holster, to a Ruger LCP in .380 ACP in a DeSantis Nemesis pocket holster. So far, I have been very impressed with the LCP. It does give up some shootability to the slightly larger and heavier revolver, but it’s thin profile and light weight do not weigh down the lightweight summer pants/shorts that are commonly worn in humid hot environments. The summer this year in Maine has been unusually humid and sticky, and the Galco pocket holster was becoming uncomfortable to have in my pocket. The LCP is causing none of these issues. I will update you all next week as to how its going moving forward, but this looks to be a great summer carry piece! Make sure you keep an eye out on the Firearms Insider for the review of the holster!

That about wraps up the Week in Review, so we are going to head into our main topic, a discussion with Massad Ayoob!

Main Topic: A Discussion with Massad Ayoob

1.) As a young man you started carrying a firearm at an early age. Can you tell the listeners what that was like to be entrusted with such a responsibility so early on?

2.) What prompted you to get into the firearms industry, both as an enthusiast as well as a competitive shooter and trainer?

3.) Moving to the Law Enforcement side of things, how did your presence in the firearms industry alter the gear you chose or the things you carried while on-duty?

4.) Looking at modern LEO training, what would you say is the BEST development of the modern training world? What would you say is the WORST (or have you seen something that hinders proper training?)

5.) You started writing early on in your career, can you tell the listeners how your writings have evolved over the years? Has the advent of the internet and other media forced you to alter the way you approach your writing?

6.) I am a HUGE fan of the “Greatest Handguns of the World I & II” books, can you shed a little light on what drove you to write those books?

7.) I love the “Ayoob Files” collection but the book version of it is somewhat scarce. Are there any plans to offer an updated and expanded reissue of that great collection?

8.) On the ProArms podcast, the defensive shooting interviews (along with the roundtable discussions) offer a great deal of information for the defensive hand gunner. What do you think is the most important thing that an armed citizen can take away from those discussions?

9.) If you could make the modern handgun manufacturers make one change, be it in the manufacture process or on the gun itself, what would it be?

Obscure Gun We Want:

Ryan: This week, I am really in the mood to see H&K come back out with their fantastic P9S Target. This was a 9mm Para pistol produced from 1965 to 1978 that utilized the roller-locking delay system and could have the trigger pull adjusted down to nearly 2.5 pounds! A really interesting and not all too common firearm.
