Welcome TJ! Tonight, TJ and I are going to discuss his experiences with the laser training devices he has used, along with some other training aids you can use to help improve your shooting!
Main Topic: Laser Training
I’m someone who does not like lasers on handguns. How are training lasers different from lasers you would use for sighting your handgun?
- Money savings
- Ammo savings
- Practice at home
- Visual feedback of accuracy
- No recoil
Laserlyte offers many different products to allow your firearms to be used for laser training. They also offer stand-alone units that simulate a real firearms.
- TriggerTyme with Laser Insert and Trigger Tyme Laser
- Universal Pistol Laser Insert
You can find reviews for a few of the LaserLyte products on the Firearms Insider.
Next Level Training makes a laser training pistol called the SIRT (Shot Indicating Resetting Trigger). It is roughly the same dimensions as a Glock 17, and even fits the same holsters. The SIRT Pistol has two integrated lasers. The first is a shot take-up laser. As soon as any pressure is put on the trigger, it shows that laser. It sits below the bore, so the shooter may not even see it, but it is useful for a trainer to know when the shooter is pressing the trigger too early. The second laser is the Shot Indicating Laser that activates once the trigger breaks. This one is visible to the shooter. The take-up laser is able to be turned off, if you wish to not use that feature. There are two models available: the Performer and the Pro. The Pro is their full weight model that has a metal slide. It very closely simulates the weight of a Glock. The performer is a less expensive option that uses a polymer slide. Due to the polymer, it is significantly lighter.
Both models can be had with either a red or green shot indicating laser. The green is more visible in bright daylight, but adds to the price. Both models also come with a full weight training magazine, so you can practice mag changes.
Next Level Training also offers an AR-15 training unit that replaces your entire bolt. Due to variances in manufacturer's, there is some initial adjustment, but once made, the bolt only takes as long to swap as it would to swap your bolt with any other. The replacement bolt is also set up in a way to make the trigger reset after each shot, eliminating the need to rack the bolt each time. Being that you only swap the bolt, you can practice with your own trigger, optics, and accessories. With the bolt in place, you can not insert a standard charging handle, preventing you from trying to load a live round using your SIRT bolt. The AR bolt is also available in red or green lasers, but does not offer the trigger take-up laser that the pistol does.
- Built in shot timer
There are multiple free softwares that people have developed to use with laser training systems. Being that these are user made on the internet, please download at your own risk. The one I have used tracks each shot that is taken by using a web cam. It also has a feature where you can filter out red or green hits, in case you are using a SIRT with the take-up laser switched on.
