God and Guns Podcast - Episode 001
Introduction of hosts and Statement of Faith
Main topic - Ethics of gun ownership.
Hello and welcome to the very first weekly episode of the God and Guns Podcast. My name’s Mike, your host, (Zack) And I’m Zack, your other host.
Zack and I will be using this podcast to talk about God, guns, and the responsible Christian gun owners interests.
Today we’ll be introducing ourselves so you can know a little bit about us and going over our mission and statement of faith. After that we’ll be discussing the ethics of gun ownership.
Mike - Some of you may recognize me from Gun Guy Radio where I have appeared as a co-host for a number of episodes.
-Grew up in a Christian home. And grew up around guns. I still consider myself a gun noob.
-I attended Toccoa Falls College in northeast Georgia. Biblical Studies degree.
-Happily married and have 2 boys with 1 on the way.
Zack - None of you will recognize me from Gun Guy Radio because this is my first podcast (this is a different Zack). I am a christian, husband, expectant father, and provider. I grew up in a christian home with a hunting gun enthusiast father. I also graduated from TFC but with a degree in Communications.
- Some confessions about me: I don’t like long walks on the beach... short to medium length walks at best.
- As a young man I enjoyed rap music, but as I get older I like country music more and more.
- My two favorite Christmas movies are Die Hard and Ntl Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation.
I those items give you insight into me, but of course I am more than those monikers. I am struggle against my selfish sinful nature and thus to keep my integrity intact I turn to Jesus for strength but like most men I don’t lean on him enough.
Statement of Faith:
We believe there is one God, who is the creator and sustainer of life. We believe that we as humans are naturally sinful and require atonement for our sins, which is where Christ comes in! We believe that Jesus Christ is the son of God and was sent here to die and take the punishment that we deserve and that He was raised up again by His Father in heaven. We also believe that Jesus Christ is the only way to God and that can be achieved only by putting your faith in Him and making Him the Lord of your life.
Ethics of gun ownership:
-Jesus taught that is was ok to save the life of your animal on the Sabbath.
-Rahab lied to save the life of God’s spies in Jericho.
-Protecting yourself and your family
-1 Timothy 5:8- Anyone who does not provide for their relatives, and especially for their own household, has denied the faith and is worse than an unbeliever. (NIV)
-Psalm 91:1-16 (David wrote this but was constantly under threat by Saul. David carried weapons and so did his soldiers)
1 Whoever dwells in the shelter of the Most High
will rest in the shadow of the Almighty.[a]
2 I will say of the Lord, “He is my refuge and my fortress,
my God, in whom I trust.”
3 Surely he will save you
from the fowler’s snare
and from the deadly pestilence.
4 He will cover you with his feathers,
and under his wings you will find refuge;
his faithfulness will be your shield and rampart.
5 You will not fear the terror of night,
nor the arrow that flies by day,
6 nor the pestilence that stalks in the darkness,
nor the plague that destroys at midday.
7 A thousand may fall at your side,
ten thousand at your right hand,
but it will not come near you.
8 You will only observe with your eyes
and see the punishment of the wicked.
9 If you say, “The Lord is my refuge,”
and you make the Most High your dwelling,
10 no harm will overtake you,
no disaster will come near your tent.
11 For he will command his angels concerning you
to guard you in all your ways;
12 they will lift you up in their hands,
so that you will not strike your foot against a stone.
13 You will tread on the lion and the cobra;
you will trample the great lion and the serpent.
14 “Because he[b] loves me,” says the Lord, “I will rescue him;
I will protect him, for he acknowledges my name.
15 He will call on me, and I will answer him;
I will be with him in trouble,
I will deliver him and honor him.
16 With long life I will satisfy him
and show him my salvation.”(NIV)
-Proverbs 17:19- “Whoever loves a quarrel loves sin; whoever builds a high gate invites destruction.”(NIV)
-Psalm 82:4- “Rescue the weak and the needy; deliver them from the hand of the wicked.”(NIV)
-Ezekial 33:6- “But if the watchman sees the sword coming and does not blow the trumpet to warn the people and the sword comes and takes someone’s life, that person’s life will be taken because of their sin, but I will hold the watchman accountable for their blood.”(NIV)
-Exodus 22:2-3- “If a thief is caught breaking in at night and is struck a fatal blow, the defender is not guilty of bloodshed; 3 but if it happens after sunrise, the defender is guilty of bloodshed. “Anyone who steals must certainly make restitution, but if they have nothing, they must be sold to pay for their theft.”(NIV)
8 “They all plotted together to come and fight against Jerusalem and stir up trouble against it. 9 But we prayed to our God and posted a guard day and night to meet this threat.
10 Meanwhile, the people in Judah said, “The strength of the laborers is giving out, and there is so much rubble that we cannot rebuild the wall.”
11 Also our enemies said, “Before they know it or see us, we will be right there among them and will kill them and put an end to the work.”
12 Then the Jews who lived near them came and told us ten times over, “Wherever you turn, they will attack us.”
13 Therefore I stationed some of the people behind the lowest points of the wall at the exposed places, posting them by families, with their swords, spears and bows. 14 After I looked things over, I stood up and said to the nobles, the officials and the rest of the people, “Don’t be afraid of them. Remember the Lord, who is great and awesome, and fight for your families, your sons and your daughters, your wives and your homes.”
15 When our enemies heard that we were aware of their plot and that God had frustrated it, we all returned to the wall, each to our own work.
16 From that day on, half of my men did the work, while the other half were equipped with spears, shields, bows and armor. The officers posted themselves behind all the people of Judah 17 who were building the wall. Those who carried materials did their work with one hand and held a weapon in the other, 18 and each of the builders wore his sword at his side as he worked. But the man who sounded the trumpet stayed with me.
19 Then I said to the nobles, the officials and the rest of the people, “The work is extensive and spread out, and we are widely separated from each other along the wall. 20 Wherever you hear the sound of the trumpet, join us there. Our God will fight for us!”
21 So we continued the work with half the men holding spears, from the first light of dawn till the stars came out. 22 At that time I also said to the people, “Have every man and his helper stay inside Jerusalem at night, so they can serve us as guards by night and as workers by day.” 23 Neither I nor my brothers nor my men nor the guards with me took off our clothes; each had his weapon, even when he went for water.”[a](NIV)
-1 Samuel 13:19-22- (Early gun control)
19 “Not a blacksmith could be found in the whole land of Israel, because the Philistines had said, “Otherwise the Hebrews will make swords or spears!” 20 So all Israel went down to the Philistines to have their plow points, mattocks, axes and sickles[a] sharpened. 21 The price was two-thirds of a shekel[b] for sharpening plow points and mattocks, and a third of a shekel[c] for sharpening forks and axes and for repointing goads.
22 So on the day of the battle not a soldier with Saul and Jonathan had a sword or spear in his hand; only Saul and his son Jonathan had them.”(NIV)
-Psalms 44:6-7 (Technically you can’t even trust your guns to save you. We still have to put our trust in God)
6 “I put no trust in my bow,
my sword does not bring me victory;
7 but you give us victory over our enemies,
you put our adversaries to shame.”(NIV)
-Resorting to violence in the face of a non-violent threat is wrong. (Mocking, Teasing, etc...)
-Our goal is a productive relationship with God. We have a biblical responsibility to serve God before everything else, and that includes guns.
-Objections to using a gun.
-Thou shalt not kill-
-Turn the other cheek-
A friend was in front of me coming out of church one day, and the preacher was standing at the door as he always is to shake hands. He grabbed my friend by the hand and pulled him aside.
The Pastor said to him, "You need to join the Army of the Lord!"
My friend replied, "I'm already in the Army of the Lord, Pastor." The pastor questioned, "How come I don't see you except at Christmas and Easter?"
He whispered back, "I'm in the secret service."
