Counting calories is out of fashion.  We aren't supposed to worry about getting too many if we are getting lots of nutrient dense foods.  But what if you're getting a lot of nutrient dense foods and it isn't very many calories at all? Somehow that is a bad thing.  This week we talk about this double standard and the possible negative implications of going below your recommended caloric intake.

Rachel addresses a question from Angela Neale: What does she recommend to clients when coming back from an injury? How soon should they start training again? Should they do any training while they still have pain? Specifically, I hurt my lower back 3 weeks ago doing deadlifts. Did two other workouts later that week. They were body weight and light kettle bells and both HIIT. Couldn't bend over at all for over a week (or even put socks on or tie my own shoes). Now I'm nervous to lift or even do body weight training. Wondering where to start? The only time I feel any pain now is when I sneeze.

Carol News: Crazy happy about my progress with www.jeffrynutrition.com.   ** I said "nutritionist" on the show and I think Jef is more of a "nutrition coach."  Sorry!  I'm doing some Ultra Low Carb but not completely.  We are working to find my upper limits and I CAN have a cheeseburger!!  YAY!  Jef coaching me through al of it.  I'm  off sweeteners of any kind and dropping weight!   Seemed to be water weight initially but still losing. Nice progress so far.  I highly recommend you find a coach!!

Stephen Woody is a 5th Degree Black Belt, Xtreme Weapons champion, and now he can add Fat2Fit-bitter champ to his list of accolades. Mr. Stephen Woody Stephen is not only our April Fitbit champ, he is also a 5th Degree Black Belt in the American Taekwondo Association.  He owns and operates his own studio in Southern California, near Disneyland.  Stephen started Taekwondo in 1993 thanks in part to the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, and his mom finally giving in.  Since then he has gone on to win multiple state and district titles.  Most recently he earned first place in Xtreme and Creative Weapons at the Southwest District Championships.  Stephen tells us that outside of Martial Arts he is a husband and father of an 18 month old who loves to spend time with his son.

The first podcast I watch was with Dr. Ede. I then began my journey with nutritional ketosis.  I started nutritional ketosis at the end of November last year.  I felt very well initially, best of all the lack of hunger impressed me. However, the past few months have been struggling. Meaning I am not losing weight, I actually feel that I am gaining fat. And then I watched your podcast with Kieffer, he is great by the way, so much knowledge. Kieffer is a star. I read Carb night . My CN journey began three weeks ago and I am enjoying food I have not eaten for years. I am not sure if  it is working for me. I have been trying to pay attention to my protein intake. Also trying to change exercise routine into weight lifting, but it is hard without mentor. So, Carol, thank you for inspiring me, you seem so jolly , lovely and a good person. I am a 50 yr old 5 time marathoner who let himself get distracted by work and bad habits and am working on dropping another 20 lbs.  I listen to your shows on my long weekend walks.  I get out early while still dark during the week so i don't use ear buds then.  Enjoying your podcasts. Hi Carol! I just wanted to let you know that I'm doing great on Carb Nite so far. Tomorrow it will officially be a week and I've already lost 6.1 lbs. I cut back on my workouts last week as well. Holy cats! I actually have to go shopping for new work clothes (size 6) as my other clothes are just hanging off me. -Angela Neale

Angela and I have traded more emails about how well CarbNite is going for her.  She is proof that we should continue learning and trying new things.  I applaud her for stepping outside of her comfort zone to try something new that might even sound a little unconventional.  Angela is getting more recovery time and learning more about how foods are affecting her efforts.  GO ANGELA!!  Congrats on your progress! Angela Neale:  So far this year I've been working to be fat adapted. I don't pee on pieces of paper (keto sticks) or check my blood ketone levels or anything like that, I've just been concerned with eating nutritious foods and eating pretty low carb/high fat. I've been doing well with that as far as my energy levels are and my performance while working out, and genereal well being throughout the day go. My issue is that I'm maintaining my weight/body fat and I would like to be losing inches and body fat.  Not excited about using low-nutrient/processed foods: Would starchy carbs (real foods that only need to be cooked to processed) work?

AJ had already addressed Angela’s questions in earlier conversation.  She can’t give specific advice without knowing more about Angela but she always suggests that folks do Carb Nite properly before moving on to Carb Backloading or giving up on Carb Nite.

Sandy Drummond from Facebook and Fitbit Group: Just listened to the latest episode with Kefir. Ahahha more confusion lol You are struggling with that last 10 lbs correct? Have you ever heard of JJ Virgin? She talks about how if you are sensitive to a food your weight could be from the inflammation these foods cause.   It's a tough diet to follow. I fell off the wagon when I was training for a half marathon while on the diet and felt was losing too much ( can't believe those words are coming from my mouth).  You eliminate gluten, eggs, dairy, soy, corn, peanuts and sugar/sweeteners. Think this could be your issue?

James R. Sanders, MFP:  Carol!!! I found your podcast through FRN and finally got caught up! I'm a gun guy, a machinist, a musician, a foody and a beer lover. I'm 29 and my fitness and nutrition is more or less maintenance at this point. I'm 5foot9 and when I was 18 I weighed 120lbs, I was tiny!! It took about 7 years to hit 150lbs and considered myself in great shape. 2 years ago I hit 170lbs and had to change something to prevent the 30 year old landslide. My journey is the opposite of most of your listeners but gaining weight, healthy weight, is a struggle all the same. I love the show, good info and interesting ideas! I'm not sure if I'll keep up with this MFP thing, but we'll see!!!

REALLY want to start eating better overall. Not just me, but my family. Wife and two daughters, 13 and 11. Competitive dancers (one that has a super fast metabolism and one that has a very slow metabolism). The toughest part is getting everyone on the same page when their bodies require different amounts...trying to figure out what approach to start with. Having some physical ailments (tendon tears) that keep hanging me up and keeping me from starting to work out again, not to mention the extreme cold and snow that we’ve been having in Chicago that keeps us indoors a lot lately...did I mention that I make excuses for everything...you probably already figured that out! Devin Blystone of Firearms Insider & Producer of Gun & Gear Podcast: Skinny kid, chubby teen, fat young adult by eating fast food and pizza rolls (especially when I figured out I could have bacon any time I wanted). Started hating that I all my friends were skinny. Asked my friend about zee gym he was going to. Convinced me to come try it after hanging out one day. Started going a lot. Listened to the owner(used to be a trainer at another gym). Started eating better. Carol Salva of Fat2Fit HQ:  My story - chubby kid.  Chubby Adult.  But after kids, too much weight that wasn’t going anywhere.  I’ve starved myself, yo-yo dieting, tried quick-fix pills and such.  Finally, committed to losing the weight in 2009.  Over trained and super low calorie restriction got me way down (below a healthy weight) and then I couldn’t maintain it.  That is when I got obsessed.  Thankfully, the obsession has lead me to learn about myself and new ways of making healthy choices that don’t put weight on me.  Struggling with 10lbs of Christmas weight.  No time to exercise much lately.  Hoping “The Carb Nite Solution” will be the answer.

  • GoodDaytoYou Sometimes I make an "obstacle course" before I leave for work. I use big post it's, stick them on the wall or with home equipment. This works well if I'm working late or I know motivation to really work out isn't gonna be there. I make many smaller tasks like "25 sit ups" or "50 squats" and space them between cooking and chores. Seeing them written up on the wall makes me want to do them and take the post it down, but then again I might be a tad OCD.

  • lsutton484 i tell myself "get off your ass memories aren't made on the couch." Oh yeah go camping in the arctic eat around 3500 calories a day and still loose 3 pounds in 2 days. it may not be for everyone but i still have all my toes so i must have done ok.

  • jeffhendershot No secrets. Just knowing that others are observing your commitment (diary, exercise routine, appearance) is enough. Logging is a good motivator. When you desire to eat sweets, at least make it a protein bar! :-)

Started looking for a gun podcast and thought I would give this one a try.  With my surprise, it changed my life.  They interview a lot of inspirational podcasters that taught me the proper way to eat and sleep.  In turn it will cause us to be healthy first, and as a result it will lead us to lose weight and become a healthy weight.  Give it a try!  It was well worth it to me!
