Sandy Drummond from Facebook and Fitbit Group: Just listened to the latest episode with Kefir. Ahahha more confusion lol You are struggling with that last 10 lbs correct? Have you ever heard of JJ Virgin? She talks about how if you are sensitive to a food your weight could be from the inflammation these foods cause.   It's a tough diet to follow. I fell off the wagon when I was training for a half marathon while on the diet and felt was losing too much ( can't believe those words are coming from my mouth).  You eliminate gluten, eggs, dairy, soy, corn, peanuts and sugar/sweeteners. Think this could be your issue?

James R. Sanders, MFP:  Carol!!! I found your podcast through FRN and finally got caught up! I'm a gun guy, a machinist, a musician, a foody and a beer lover. I'm 29 and my fitness and nutrition is more or less maintenance at this point. I'm 5foot9 and when I was 18 I weighed 120lbs, I was tiny!! It took about 7 years to hit 150lbs and considered myself in great shape. 2 years ago I hit 170lbs and had to change something to prevent the 30 year old landslide. My journey is the opposite of most of your listeners but gaining weight, healthy weight, is a struggle all the same. I love the show, good info and interesting ideas! I'm not sure if I'll keep up with this MFP thing, but we'll see!!!

REALLY want to start eating better overall. Not just me, but my family. Wife and two daughters, 13 and 11. Competitive dancers (one that has a super fast metabolism and one that has a very slow metabolism). The toughest part is getting everyone on the same page when their bodies require different amounts...trying to figure out what approach to start with. Having some physical ailments (tendon tears) that keep hanging me up and keeping me from starting to work out again, not to mention the extreme cold and snow that we’ve been having in Chicago that keeps us indoors a lot lately...did I mention that I make excuses for everything...you probably already figured that out! Started hating that I all my friends were skinny. Asked my friend about zee gym he was going to. Convinced me to come try it after hanging out one day. Started going a lot. Listened to the owner(used to be a trainer at another gym). Started eating better. Carol Salva of Fat2Fit HQ:  My story - chubby kid.  Chubby Adult.  But after kids, too much weight that wasn’t going anywhere.  I’ve starved myself, yo-yo dieting, tried quick-fix pills and such.  Finally, committed to losing the weight in 2009.  Over trained and super low calorie restriction got me way down (below a healthy weight) and then I couldn’t maintain it.  That is when I got obsessed.  Thankfully, the obsession has lead me to learn about myself and new ways of making healthy choices that don’t put weight on me.  Struggling with 10lbs of Christmas weight.  No time to exercise much lately.  Hoping “The Carb Nite Solution” will be the answer.

  • GoodDaytoYou Sometimes I make an "obstacle course" before I leave for work. I use big post it's, stick them on the wall or with home equipment. This works well if I'm working late or I know motivation to really work out isn't gonna be there. I make many smaller tasks like "25 sit ups" or "50 squats" and space them between cooking and chores. Seeing them written up on the wall makes me want to do them and take the post it down, but then again I might be a tad OCD.

  • lsutton484 i tell myself "get off your ass memories aren't made on the couch." Oh yeah go camping in the arctic eat around 3500 calories a day and still loose 3 pounds in 2 days. it may not be for everyone but i still have all my toes so i must have done ok.

  • jeffhendershot No secrets. Just knowing that others are observing your commitment (diary, exercise routine, appearance) is enough. Logging is a good motivator. When you desire to eat sweets, at least make it a protein bar! :-)

Started looking for a gun podcast and thought I would give this one a try.  With my surprise, it changed my life.  They interview a lot of inspirational podcasters that taught me the proper way to eat and sleep.  In turn it will cause us to be healthy first, and as a result it will lead us to lose weight and become a healthy weight.  Give it a try!  It was well worth it to me!

Tip of the Week:  Instead of placing a chicken on a roasting rack, cut thick slices of onion, put them in an oiled pan, then place the chicken on top. The onion will absorb the chicken juices. After roasting, let the chicken rest while you make a sauce with the onions by adding a little stock or water to the pan and cooking it for about 3 minutes on high heat. - Mary in Cleveland

  • Make your health and fitness your hobby -Learn
  • Find a “filter” - lots of sources out there and it can be overwhelming
  • Weight Loss is 85-90% what we put in our mouths
  • Eat real food
  • Don’t drink your calories - that includes fruit juice
  • No sugar or artificial sweeteners
  • No Grains
  • Have a partner(s) in the journey
  • Make time to move
  • Sleep

LOL Do you know if it's possible to set MFP to only record your exercise (and not dock you 2000 calories for not entering food?) I know on a podcast you said Zeke (maybe?) was only recording exercise? I only ask because I'm doing this crazy elimination diet and not super interested in logging my food all the time (I'm writing it in my day planner, along with other key items I'm self examining). I really look forward to seeing how the Calorie Myth method of working out goes! Thanks again for all your awesomeness, encouragement and keeping us all accountable in staying with the podcast. TOPIC:  Lisa Jarmon's Story:  

In November of 2009, I found myself at 262 lbs.  Somehow I had allowed myself to get closer to 300 than 200 - sobering! I knew that with a family history of heart disease, I was headed for an early grave.  Starting with Weight Watchers and journeying through a number of plans and methods (some wiser than others), I’ve lost 94 lbs. and would like to lose an additional 20-30.  Since I was urged to set a goal for this year (Carol:), I am working hard at fine tuning it and figuring out what it will really take to get to my goal.

I’d like to share some of what I’ve learned, some of the best resources I’ve found, my biggest frustration about sharing my story, and what I’m most passionate about.

Samantha Sgruggs, RD gave us a great tip for Brussel Sprouts.  “You just gotta cook them right! Some people steam them or boil, which traps that Brassica gas. Saute = best.@Nutri2Fruition

Howdy, Carol! I really only have ONE goal for 2014 and that is to actively pursue kaizen - (Philosophy of improvement or change for the best.)   I just want to make small incremental changes to improve myself, and thus my life. But to be more specific:

1. Be a better dad and husband today than I was yesterday.

2. Tell my wife every day that I love her. (Sadly, I don't do that hardly enough. It's mostly the autopilot stuff - you know, before I leave or after I come home, before we go to bed at night, etc. I want to just surprise her with it every day.)

3. Continue to experiment and find out what works for me and what doesn't as far as diet and exercise go.

4. Focus on HEALTHY, rather than skinny.

5. Do some kind of mud run.

6. Get my family to Houston.

And that's it. Thank y'all so much for what you do. It makes more of a difference than you know.

Carol: Doesn’t seem like enough exercise.  Few pages in the book dedicated to that.  Machines help.

Tip of the week:  Banana ripening Avocados:   If you buy hard, unripened avocados, try putting them in a bag with a ripe banana.  Check it 12 hours later and your avocado will probably be ripe and ready!

Carol commented on Tom's food log and Tom responded: I have a bad habit of snacking at night and do not list it. Hence- my weight loss has stalled. But I know what the problem is and I am waiting for the internal switch to flip so that I can start up again. I've noticed that when I was on track I was extremely motivated to lose and did. I don't know how or why but something clicked and I made it happen.   In my opinion, there is no diet or exercise or magic pill that will help anyone lose weight, stop smoking or anything else unless it truly comes from the inside and there is motivation and only then will you see real results.

I'm friends with Tom on myfitnesspal so this isn't really show feedback.  But I thought his analogy of that "switch" was very insightful.  I asked him if I could share this because I think a lot of us can identify with that.  If the switch is off... we need to find the thing that will switch it back on.  It's okay if it turns off.  Everyone's does.  And it's okay if you don't find the "on" switch right away.  But don't stop trying to figure it out.  We applaud Tom for sticking it out on MFP even when he doesn't have the deep desire for it right now.  Just keep on keepin' on Tom.  You'll come across your switch.  I'm sure of it!  - Carol

Update from Jake:  I'm holding steady at 205...Only up 4 from my final 8 week weigh in. Tried some wheat products ie: pizza and felt TERRIBLE! Focusing on Meat, Veggies and Fruit.... maybe a little Taco Bell.  Drinking some diet pop again... Not buying cases though.  Making positive choices asking for "no bun" when eating out, choosing salads over other menu items. I really think dairy is a big no-no for me.... digestive consequences....

Update from Carol:  High Fat is working for me to suppress my appetite (finally - SOMETHING).  But I have to watch overall caloric intake because I mindlessly munch all day (even when not hungry).  So less activity and 3,000 calorie days put weight on me.  Not High Fat, I think.  I am having a lot of success right now with LOTS of non-starchy veggies and LOTS of Fat and some protein.  As long as I watch what I snack on.  Some of my Ketogenic journey is recorded below.  Your own blood work numbers are pretty cool to see.   .5-3.0 is supposed to be Nutritional Ketosis.  I was having too much protein and this is how my numbers came out when I dialed back the protein, kept healthy fats high and made sure I was getting a ton of non-starcy veggies:

COMMUNITY JUICE FAST started Sept 22nd!    How Juicing can fit into a quest for Ketosis?  We discuss cycling different protocols to keep things fresh.  I like a 5 day juice fast just to reset and start fresh.  For me, it isn’t about the 5 day juice fast.  It is about the time following the fast.  I have new taste buds!  After a fast it is much easier for me to avoid processed foods and make healthier choices.  It just works for me. (Next Community Juice Fast is Sept 22, 2013!  and don't forget to like our Facebook Juice page)

Also!  We are hearing that trying to stay in ketosis for an extended period of time may not be optimal.  For more on that, listen to a recent episode of Ask the Low Carb Experts by Jimmy Moore: Episode 45 - John Kiefer and Dr. Rocky Patel talk about glycogen stores, ketogenic diets.. Carol:  2 ½ weeks now.  Not losing.  Gaining but I think it is my indulgence in some of these things that folks pull back on. ( Nuts, cheese, just too much snacking even when I’m not hungry)  Not giving up just yet.  Tracking should help me.

What works for others doesn't necessarily work for me but I am learning A LOT!!  Yay!

Zack:  Just haven’t been focused on nutrition over the last few weeks but I am very curious about Nutritional Ketosis.  I have been looking at Tough Mudder information and it is terrifying!

This is Jack , we met at the NRA show when I stopped by the Lone Wolf booth.

At that point I had barely begun my journey in trying to lose some weight and get fit.

I thought I'd give you an update on my journey.

To date I have lost 56 pounds from a starting weight of 263 to my current weight of 207!

I give much of the credit to the positive reinforcement I get from listening to Fat2Fit and other Podcasts I have learned about from your show.

I am excited with the results to date, but still have a way to go as my goal is 190 (I think).

I lost the 1st 10 by just doing the "basics" no fast food and began to limit carbs (a little).  The big change came following your interview with Relentless Roger.  During the interview, he mentioned something about making your health one of your hobbies ( I think it was Roger, although there is an outside chance it may have been Dean Dwyer).  This absolutely resonated with me!  As a firearms enthusiast, I have spent countless hours learning about my hobby, yet I have spent almost no time understanding nutrition or wellness!

I began listening to Relentless Roger and the Caveman Doctor Podcast and eventually discovered The Paleo Solution Podcast.  Because I literally had years to catch up on Robb Wolf;s podcast, I had plenty of listening to do (I'm still not caught up).

Ultimately, I got Robb Wolfs book and have become a little militant (according to my family) about the whole clean eating thing.  Not doing the grass fed meat as often as I'd like, but otherwise I'm pretty "hardcore".

The education has been amazing and while I am paranoid of this being a "fad", for now, I am in the zone and continue to invest time and energy to get healthy.

My job requires that I travel extensively (>50% of the time) and while this makes eating right a challenge, it also offers the opportunity for me to listen to the podcasts which reinforces my resolve.

While, I haven't integrated a formal workout regiment, I have been diligent about walking daily (no less than an hour a day at about a 4MPH pace).  I still believe that 95% of the success can be attributed to diet not exercise.  My goal is to begin lifting weights once I get to my goal weight.  Why I know this is probably not optimal, I am trying to avoid the mental impact of gaining weight (even if from muscle) until I am ready.

There are so many tools I have learned about on the show that have helped me along the way.

Good morning y'all.  In the last year, I've lost 30 pounds and gotten in the best shape of my life.

I'm 43, father of two (6 & 10), and a former fat, asthmatic, allergic, lazy kid. My wonderful wife of almost 24 years started exercising about a year and a half ago and she really inspired me. She was not fat by any stretch of the imagination, but she started toning up and got my attention. Her encouragement was huge. So, here's what I did:

  1. started eating better quality food and smaller portions, and avoiding processed foods.
  2. I started Invisalign and CrossFit on the same day. Invisalign was a big help for me because I would nibble, snack and graze all day. Invisalign showed me that snacking was not worth the extra time of flossing and brushing after each and every snack.
  3.  CrossFit was a perfect fit for my life because it is a fast, time-efficient workout. The smaller classes/groups are a plus also. There is always a coach there encouraging, correcting and even pushing me to do more and not hurt myself.
  4. I went more Paleo style nutrition and have eliminated most of the grains from my diet
  5.  I started using FitBit and tracking all of my intake and activity. Wow, that helped keep me honest and relearn what a serving size really is.
  6.  I didn't really use the scale at first. I saw my progress in my pants getting loser
  7.  I practice moderation in all things, including moderation.

Some things I've noticed since I started eating better and avoiding the processed garbage foods: I have more energy! I don't have to use my allergy medicine every day, and now, I rarely need it.

On FitBit, if y'all set up a group, I'll play.

Zack, you seem to be looking at your weight loss through a scope on 9x, try and dial it back to 3x and get back on target! Set small, achievable goals on the way to larger ones. Track your progress and don't just look at the short term, look at the long term.

Carol:  From the book I'm only implementing the cheat day!!!! (my diet is pretty clean with mostly real food, lower carb already)   On the cheat day I had lots of sugary and bready carbs as recommended... Does it work for me?.. more data needed.  Still doing my fairly clean eating on other 6 days.

Zack: Common responses to questions is a smart chapter to include. 30g in 30 min is tough w/o dairy and eggs.

So I was listening to episode 41 in the middle of my 7 mile walk today when you started talking about salad dressings and what you use. I so wanted to call on the spot and let you know what I do. Had to get back and post this right away. I use salsa! If I'm at my favorite Mexican restaurant I get salsa and guacamole! Sorry, I just love it!
