F2FHQ 114 - Tim Grabow Lost 100lbs by Keeping it Simple

IMG_0979-150x150.jpg

Move Over JT! Fat2Fit HQ inspired another Gun Guy to transform himself into a healthier, happier Gun Guy!  Tim Grabow has been a listener of the Firearms Radio Network for a long while and finally gave our show a try. (Sound familiar?)  He soon embarked on an all out health journey and credits JT with helping him find his way into an NSNG (no sugar, no grains) way of eating.  Listen to Tim tell us how he set out to learn all he could and how that ended up resulting in a 100 lb weight loss.  Tim has a very healthy attitude about how to manage cravings, holidays and loved ones when you are making lifestyle changes.  What a great person to have in our F2F community! Welcome to the Fat2fithHQ podcast.  I'm your guest, Tim Grabow and along with me are Carol and JT of the Firearms Radio Network.  In this podcast, we are chronicalling our journeys from Fat 2 Fit.  We talk about pursuing a healthier lifestyle, not only in diet but in all areas of life.

FROM THE COMMUNITY:Petia via email My name is Petia and I have been following your work on fat2fitq.com since end of last year. I found your your podcast searching for low carb diets, I think. The first podcast I watch was with Dr. Ede. I then began my journey with nutritional ketosis.  I started nutritional ketosis at the end of November last year.  I felt very well initially, best of all the lack of hunger impressed me. However, the past few months have been struggling. Meaning I am not losing weight, I actually feel that I am gaining fat. And then I watched your podcast with Kieffer, he is great by the way, so much knowledge. Kieffer is a star. I read Carb night . My CN journey began three weeks ago and I am enjoying food I have not eaten for years. I am not sure if  it is working for me. I have been trying to pay attention to my protein intake. Also trying to change exercise routine into weight lifting, but it is hard without mentor. So, Carol, thank you for inspiring me, you seem so jolly , lovely and a good person. Thank you for reading this message. And keep letting us know about your progress. Have a great day! With much appreciation Petia

Thanks for writing back and forth with me Petia.  I think you're doing a fantastic job on your journey.  You just keep trying things and like Roger says in this podcast: just breathe.  We forget all the things we are doing right.  I have enjoyed our emails and hope we can continue to motivate each other.  Keep us posted on your journey!  - Carol

Brad Wolfram: I picked up you podcast from FRN and have listen to a few shows. Most recently your recap of Paleo in Austin (where I live), RC Patel and AJ. I am a 50 yr old 5 time marathoner who let himself get distracted by work and bad habits and am working on dropping another 20 lbs.  I listen to your shows on my long weekend walks.  I get out early while still dark during the week so i don't use ear buds then.  Enjoying your podcasts. I also join your FitBit gang!  Keep it up the high energy.  Kind regards, Brad

My reply via email:  Brad: Austin is a great town!  We should've done a F2FHQ meetup over the PaleoFX weekend.  Love Austin!  I'm in Galveston this weekend.  Daylight is breaking through so I'm about to head out for my podcast walk.  It's a kick to think someone is out there listening to me doing the same thing sometimes.  :)  Hey, congrats on your marathons!!  Impressive!  I did a 1/2 once & it about killed me.  Those Tough Mudders have a ton if stopping, sitting & eating along the way.  Not as hard to me.  Hey!  I bet we will do another one- you should join us!! Check out this video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JzAKGpr_qJ4&sns=em

It's cool that you're out walking & knocking down that 20lbs. Keep it up!  we all get distracted by work.  Great that you're making time for yourself.  Thanks for listening Brad & thanks for the kind words.  Keep stepping!!  - Carol

Angela Neale and her CarbNite journey!

Hi Carol! I just wanted to let you know that I'm doing great on Carb Nite so far. Tomorrow it will officially be a week and I've already lost 6.1 lbs. I cut back on my workouts last week as well. Holy cats! I actually have to go shopping for new work clothes (size 6) as my other clothes are just hanging off me. -Angela Neale

Angela and I have traded more emails about how well CarbNite is going for her.  She is proof that we should continue learning and trying new things.  I applaud her for stepping outside of her comfort zone to try something new that might even sound a little unconventional.  Angela is getting more recovery time and learning more about how foods are affecting her efforts.  GO ANGELA!!  Congrats on your progress! F2FHQ 089 - Andrea "AJ" Jengle on Success for Women with Carb Nite and Carb Backloading

Many of us could use help applying cutting edge science to our everyday lives to meet our goals. Well, we are in luck!  Stress hacker and online personal trainer, Andrea "AJ" Jengle, is here with a female lens on Carb Nite and Carb Backloading.  But her advice applies to men as well.  She can speak from her own experience and as a trainer of women where she is having a lot of success with both protocols.   Listen in to hear how we can focus on our health so that things can really start to fall into place. Welcome to the Fat2Fit HQ podcast.  I’m your host, Carol Salva of the Firearms Radio Network.   In this podcast we are chronicling our journeys from Fat to Fit.  We talk about pursuing a healthier lifestyle not only in diet, but in all areas of life.

Also follow Andrea as she is a regular guest with John Kiefer  and Dr. Rocky Patel on www.body.io

.

Andrea Jengle (AJ) is a personal trainer and owner of HER Fitness Solutions. HER Fitness Solutions offers personal, specialized online training for women.   AJ created Her Fitness Solutions to guide women to a goal of looking and feeling great and being able to achieve that in the healthiest way possible.  AJ has successfully incorporated John Kiefer's protocols, Carb Back-loading and The Carb Nite Solution, into her clients programs.  She has also utilized CBL and CNS to achieve her own fitness goals and get the physique she's always wanted.

For regular folks wanting to shed fat, (not performance athletes) do you think it’s insulin levels or ketosis that makes the difference?

How you work with women now?

What about people who think you’re genetically gifted?

Feedback from community:

Angela Neale:  So far this year I've been working to be fat adapted. I don't pee on pieces of paper (keto sticks) or check my blood ketone levels or anything like that, I've just been concerned with eating nutritious foods and eating pretty low carb/high fat. I've been doing well with that as far as my energy levels are and my performance while working out, and genereal well being throughout the day go. My issue is that I'm maintaining my weight/body fat and I would like to be losing inches and body fat.  Not excited about using low-nutrient/processed foods: Would starchy carbs (real foods that only need to be cooked to processed) work?

AJ had already addressed Angela’s questions in earlier conversation.  She can’t give specific advice without knowing more about Angela but she always suggests that folks do Carb Nite properly before moving on to Carb Backloading or giving up on Carb Nite.

F2FHQ 082 - Gun Guys on Getting Healthy

FRN favorites, Hank Hockey and Devin Blystone, join Carol to give some great perspective on what life is like in our real worlds.  Listen in, you might identify with a single guy, a dad of two or a mom of three.  Surely something said in this roundtable will inspire you to join us on a journey to a healthier life!

Welcome to the Fat2FitHQ podcast. I’m your host, Carol Salva and along with me are Hank Hockey and Devin Blystone of the Firearms Radio Network .   In this podcast we are chronicling our journeys from Fat to Fit.  We talk about pursuing a healthier lifestyle not only in diet, but in all areas of life.

Topic:  Hank Hockey and Devin Blystone, from the FRN Network

Hank Hockey Director of Sales at FRN and former CoHost of Gun Guy Radio: Skinny kid with high metabolism. Couldn’t gain weight to save my life...then 30 hit! REALLY want to start eating better overall. Not just me, but my family. Wife and two daughters, 13 and 11. Competitive dancers (one that has a super fast metabolism and one that has a very slow metabolism). The toughest part is getting everyone on the same page when their bodies require different amounts...trying to figure out what approach to start with. Having some physical ailments (tendon tears) that keep hanging me up and keeping me from starting to work out again, not to mention the extreme cold and snow that we’ve been having in Chicago that keeps us indoors a lot lately...did I mention that I make excuses for everything...you probably already figured that out! Hahahaha  http://www.myfitnesspal.com/GunguyHank

Devin Blystone of Firearms Insider & Producer of Gun & Gear Podcast: Skinny kid, chubby teen, fat young adult by eating fast food and pizza rolls (especially when I figured out I could have bacon any time I wanted). Started hating that I all my friends were skinny. Asked my friend about zee gym he was going to. Convinced me to come try it after hanging out one day. Started going a lot. Listened to the owner(used to be a trainer at another gym). Started eating better. Plateaued around 230, just started track what I eat this past week. 285 when I started and now 225.75.  http://www.myfitnesspal.com/DevinBly

Carol Salva of Fat2Fit HQ:  My story - chubby kid.  Chubby Adult.  But after kids, too much weight that wasn’t going anywhere.  I’ve starved myself, yo-yo dieting, tried quick-fix pills and such.  Finally, committed to losing the weight in 2009.  Over trained and super low calorie restriction got me way down (below a healthy weight) and then I couldn’t maintain it.  That is when I got obsessed.  Thankfully, the obsession has lead me to learn about myself and new ways of making healthy choices that don’t put weight on me.  Struggling with 10lbs of Christmas weight.  No time to exercise much lately.  Hoping “The Carb Nite Solution” will be the answer.

This works well if I'm working late or I know motivation to really work out isn't gonna be there. I make many smaller tasks like "25 sit ups" or "50 squats" and space them between cooking and chores. Seeing them written up on the wall makes me want to do them and take the post it down, but then again I might be a tad OCD.

Bigmoneyscott:  Inspiring me to lose 60 lbs so far!

Started looking for a gun podcast and thought I would give this one a try.  With my surprise, it changed my life.  They interview a lot of inspirational podcasters that taught me the proper way to eat and sleep.  In turn it will cause us to be healthy first, and as a result it will lead us to lose weight and become a healthy weight.  Give it a try!  It was well worth it to me!

Dear Bigmoneyscott:  WOW!!  What a great story you have.  Your feedback is sure to inspire other folks.  We are really touched that our show has had a positive effect on your life.  Sixty pounds is impressive for anyone.  You’re the one doing the work, so be sure to congratulate yourself.  Thank you so much for the review.  And keep up the great work! - Carol

Jack Templin is a long time FRN listener.  Join us to hear how one podcast (Fat2Fit HQ - yay!)  lead to another, which lead to another, which lead to a 75 lb weight loss in one year.

Welcome to the Fat2FitHQ podcast. We are your co-hosts, I am Jack Templin and along with me is Carol Salva, of the Firearms Radio Network.  In this podcast we are chronicling our journeys from Fat to Fit.  We talk about pursuing a healthier lifestyle not only in diet, but in all areas of life.

Tip of the Week:  Instead of placing a chicken on a roasting rack, cut thick slices of onion, put them in an oiled pan, then place the chicken on top. The onion will absorb the chicken juices. After roasting, let the chicken rest while you make a sauce with the onions by adding a little stock or water to the pan and cooking it for about 3 minutes on high heat. - Mary in Cleveland

He is a retired USMC and is very good at customer care. I emailed him with a comment and he replied within a day. Lots of information on fashion tips and conceal carry ideas as a side.

Again keep up the good work and tell Zack I miss him because he was real for us guys in the work force. I know he didn't work a three shift rotation but still very relatable for us guys.

What did she do to lose so much weight and keep it off??  Well...everything.  Join us this week as Lisa Jarmon tells us about different protocols that she has tried and how successful each was.   Lisa has some great words of wisdom and her favorite free resources to share with us.

Welcome to the Fat2FitHQ podcast. I’m Carol Salva of the Firearms Radio Network and along with me is Lisa Jarmon of Middletown, Ohio.   In this podcast we are chronicling our journeys from Fat to Fit.  We talk about pursuing a healthier lifestyle not only in diet, but in all areas of life.

TOPIC:  Lisa Jarmon's Story:

In November of 2009, I found myself at 262 lbs.  Somehow I had allowed myself to get closer to 300 than 200 - sobering! I knew that with a family history of heart disease, I was headed for an early grave.  Starting with Weight Watchers and journeying through a number of plans and methods (some wiser than others), I’ve lost 94 lbs. and would like to lose an additional 20-30.  Since I was urged to set a goal for this year (Carol:), I am working hard at fine tuning it and figuring out what it will really take to get to my goal.

I’d like to share some of what I’ve learned, some of the best resources I’ve found, my biggest frustration about sharing my story, and what I’m most passionate about.

Tip of the Week:

Samantha Sgruggs, RD gave us a great tip for Brussel Sprouts.  “You just gotta cook them right! Some people steam them or boil, which traps that Brassica gas. Saute = best.@Nutri2Fruition

Sandra from Vancouver BC on F2FHQ website: “...Working on Tough Mudder for a while, now I’ve done a ½ and strength training.  Has young guy team (yay) and needs some lady friends….I hope Zack and Jake realize their early shows together are a great listen for newbie dieters. It's great to hear people have the same struggles with deciphering all the diet info out there and to learn we all go through cycles of good days and bad days.  (See Sandra’s complete feedback at www.fat2fithq.com/069)

Keep it up! A faithful listener.

Sandra...Heeeeey… how about Tough Mudder Whistler?? … check our this video that shows how my buddy Caroline overcame her fears and conquered her first Tough Mudder last October: http://youtu.be/gQ-DhvWBYOI

Thank you again for writing, Sandra. Good luck getting some girls on that Tough Mudder team.  Thanks for you support over on the Facebook page and for this feedback. I appreciate your kind words.  Please stay in touch!!

Carol

From Jay aka Geardad

Howdy, Carol! I really only have ONE goal for 2014 and that is to actively pursue kaizen - (Philosophy of improvement or change for the best.)   I just want to make small incremental changes to improve myself, and thus my life. But to be more specific:

1. Be a better dad and husband today than I was yesterday.

2. Tell my wife every day that I love her. (Sadly, I don't do that hardly enough. It's mostly the autopilot stuff - you know, before I leave or after I come home, before we go to bed at night, etc. I want to just surprise her with it every day.)

3. Continue to experiment and find out what works for me and what doesn't as far as diet and exercise go.

4. Focus on HEALTHY, rather than skinny.

5. Do some kind of mud run.

6. Get my family to Houston.

And that's it. Thank y'all so much for what you do. It makes more of a difference than you know.

Jay, aka GEARDad, from the People's Republik of Kalifornistan

Jay:  THANK YOU so much for creating the Fat2Fit HQ Instagram account!  We will all have fun following it.  I love your goal for 2014.  You just keep improving.  We should all have that as our basic goal.  Keep up the great work Jay!  - Carol

Exercise

Carol: Doesn’t seem like enough exercise.  Few pages in the book dedicated to that.  Machines help.

Tip of the week:  Banana ripening Avocados:   If you buy hard, unripened avocados, try putting them in a bag with a ripe banana.  Check it 12 hours later and your avocado will probably be ripe and ready!

Angela - Long story short: I've let the weight creep up way too much since August (got married), and need to fit back into my clothes. Exercise and good nutrition have gone out the window so I'm getting myself ready to succeed in the new year. This is step one!  You can only listen to so many fat2fit episodes while eating fritos! It's time to stop the madness :)

Going public with our 2014 Healthy Goals.

Carol:  I want to drop a jeans size and keep it off.  (Truth be told I want to drop 2 jeans sizes)  And I want to see 120lbs again for more than a milisecond.

Shari: I want to get to a size 6 - comfortable and not squeezed in. I also want to compete in at least 2 major fitness events (Tough Mudder - Yikes!) and The Beach-to-Bay Relay.

Caroline: My specific goal is to BUILD. I have a good foundation but I need to build upon it and see some significant changes.

2014 GOALS FROM THE LISTENERS:  (HOORAY FOR ALL OF YOU!!!)

Chad Danielson from The Competative Shooting Podcast: He wants to build endurance because you know it has a direct correlation to your competitive shooting (ie: getting farther through a string of shots before breathing and physical drain become an issue.)

Gina from Myfitnesspal:   My goal is to lose another 25 pounds. I lost 25 this year but need another 25 to make my goal weight. Looking forward to a productive & successful 2014.

TOM NORKUS: I recently got engaged and want to be below 250 for the wedding in Fall 2014.

STACEY KNICKERBOCKER:  I want to lose just 5 1/2 more pounds to get back to a goal weight I know I can maintain… and then maintain it!

RAE: I want to eat healthful foods, feel great and if I can get back to a size 8 that’s a bonus for me!

RUNNINGMOMMA (MFP & Fitbit): I only have one set goal for 2014 and that is to complete my own personal marathon.

AARON: My goal for 2014 is to maintain my goal weight while building muscle and losing another inch or two around my waist.

JAMEY: My main goal for 2014 that’s fitness/health related is to reduce my running mileage while focusing on getting faster at my 5k and 10k distance. I’m also trying to do more weights. And most importantly, I’m going to try to focus on self acceptance and quit feeling like I have to lose 5 more lbs always. I think that goes under mental health.

LARRY SUTTON: 33 pounds to go when i get there is when i am nervous maintaining!  (see feedback below)

BRIAN: My goal for 2014 is simple. I just want my friends to look at me and say “dude is dedicated” instead of saying “fatty failed yet again”. That is all.

All of you guys are awesome!  I am so proud to be setting goals with you and so excited that we are going to do this together!  You're each so inspiring.  Please keep up the great work and we will surely have a successful 2014! - Carol

FEEDBACK:

Andrew Delvard: I have this condition called Lupus. It's very inflammatory and quite serious but since changing my diet to a low carb paleo style I have seen a radical shift.  I have been almost 100% stable and well it's given me hope and a new lease of life. Almost a new beginning. So I'm quite fundamental about all this lol and I'm always looking for ways to fine tune and enhance things. I've really investigated the juicing thing and it at least gives me options & well...interest. I am so grateful to the community and fat2fit for the life enhancing chances it's given me.  The anti inflammatory response is definite in my experience.   `I thought it was appropriate I tell you this as feedback is good and it's contributed and supported me in difficult times so thank you :)

Andrew: We are so appreciative that you would share your story.  What an important reminder that nutrition is fundamental in the quality of our lives.  And can be a critical component when you are managing a condition like yours.  Thank you for offering this feedback and for your promise to give us more information and details in the future.  Stay Healthy! - Carol

Larry Sutton:  My wife and i were young and she worked at that fast food resterant that everyone critisises for making us all fat. she would just grab dinner before she came home. she was a manager there so her food was free and mine was half price so we thought we were saving money. we probably were but we ended up way behind in the end. she left there and went to work another place. a miscarriage inspired us to decide to get healthy. she lost 70lbs and had our son. i lost 100lbs and was in great shape which i maintained until i hurt my shoulder a couple years ago. slowly the weight came back on until she found she gained 50 back and i gained almost 80. This time we no longer have endless hours to spend in the gym and we need to eat things as a family that a 3 year old picky eater has decides are acceptable to him and we feel that are healthy choices. The weight is coming off and i am within 33 pounds of my goal now but find that mfp and the people and forum community have helped me pass a holiday hump. I started listening to your show a couple months ago after hearing everyone on frn talking about you and your show. I think Zack is waiting for you to get tough and just kick him in the ass.  I don't have a Fitbit and am unsure whether i even want 1 i think too much tracking would be bad for me as i am competitive. I am using the Runkeeper app on my iphone after completing the couch to 5k a few weeks ago.  Good luck and keep the good shows coming.

Larry: You know I'm a HUGE fan of yours and so grateful that you share your ups and downs in your weight loss journey!  I'm super excited that you are at a point where you are living a healthy life with your family.  I love being friends with you on myfitnesspal and being regularly inspired by our posts and progress.  Kudos to you and your wife for focusing on your health and that of your family.  Keep up the awesomeness!!  - Carol
