Tonight’s guests is: Duane Liptak Veteran US Marine F-A-18 Pilot, Aviator to MARSOC, EVP of MAGPUL industries inc and NRA board member

Civilian Carry Radio 081 - Duane Liptak USMC Vet & EVP of MAGPUL.jpg

BIO: Duane Liptak, Jr. was born and raised in Rural Pennsylvania, in a shooting and hunting family, and began his love of firearms and shooting at age 4 with a .22 rifle that he had received on his very first birthday from his paternal grandfather. By age 12, Duane was learning gunsmithing and reloading from his father, hunting avidly, and had dreams of becoming a US Marine. At 17, he was a sponsored USPSA shooter and had his first part-time job as a gunsmith and instructor at a local range. Pursuing a University Scholar’s B.S. degree in Administration of Justice at Penn State University, Duane interned with the University Park Police Department and did participant-as-observer research with State College, PA, Police Department as research for his thesis on policing strategies.

After college, Duane enlisted as an infantryman in the Marine Corps and was stationed in 29 Palms, CA. A short time later, the opportunity to transition to the officer side arose, and it was off to Quantico to become a Lieutenant. From Quantico, Duane went to Pensacola, FL, Meridian, MS, and VA Beach, VA on his path to becoming an F/A-18 Pilot. His first squadron deployed to Iraq in 2005, where he flew over 100 combat missions, earning six air medal strike-flight awards. After Iraq, Duane screened for a FAC tour with the newly forming Marine Special Operations Command (MARSOC). There at the start of the 2d Marine Special Operations Bn, Duane is a plank owner, or original member of the organization. MARSOC brought two ground combat deployments to Afghanistan. Duane was awarded the Bronze Star with “V” device for heroism in a multi-day battle during his second tour there. After MARSOC, it was back to aviation and a deployment to Iwakuni, Japan, and many other nations in Asia. After that deployment and while working up for another, Duane’s aircraft suffered a dual engine fire, forcing an ejection over the Atlantic. Due to injuries sustained in the ejection, he was separated from the USMC, and it was time for a new chapter.

The firearms industry was always an aspiration, and it was time to try and make that happen. Duane’s first job out of the Marine Corps was at Brownells, in Montezuma, Iowa as Director of Government Programs and head of the Training Group. As well as a start in the industry, Duane formed many enduring friendships there with the Brownell family and the other great folks in the company. From there it was off to Colorado with Magpul. Originally hired as Director of Magpul Dynamics (now Magpul Core) to run the training arm and applied product research, Duane quickly rose within the organization with roles in product management, marketing, military sales, and legislative affairs.

After several years as Director of Product Management and Marketing, working directly with the Founder and CEO, Richard Fitzpatrick, Duane took the post of Executive Vice President of Magpul Industries when Richard retired, assuming authority over all product strategy and branding matters, as well as the continued leadership of the respective departments that execute those functions.

A self-described “collector of hobbies”, apart from firearm and hunting related pursuits, the list of passions has included exploration-level cave diving, a somewhat successful stint as a guitarist, martial arts, fitness, blacksmithing, motorcycle-building, cooking (there’s a curveball for you), and other diverse pursuits. Duane has also been active in numerous competitive shootings disciplines over the years, including USPSA, clay sports, muzzleloading events, service rifle, cowboy action, precision rifle, and 3-gun. He still competes…mostly in 3-gun events, currently. Duane shoots regularly in various disciplines --from black powder cartridge rifle to modern long-range activities and nearly everything in between-- recreationally as well as for work, hunting, and match preparation. Duane is married to his amazing wife, Jamie, and is father to 4 sons, two of whom are currently serving as military service members.
