Listener Questions

Jason (Supporter) - Oh I really like them I have a couple of their lowers and uppers waiting become rifles. Are they going to do anything California compliant or do they have any new accessories on the Horizon that they can talk about. Anything for 6.5 or 7mm in the future

Tim - Can J.D. at least not make drooling sounds while talking to them. It's extremely distracting. 😂

Tyler - How do they manage to keep quality so high and price so reasonable?
Bobby - Why haven't I been chosen to win the monthly rifle giveaway yet?

Matthew - What started the monthly build sets and how many different variants have there been?

Thurmon - Do they have any plans on getting into the 9mm or other PCC variants anytime soon?
Dave - Aero sells an upper that doesn't use the standard barrel nut. It takes a special handguard. I wonder what the advantage of that design is over the mil-spec one (which they also offer).

Charlie - Pls talk about the differences/ advantages of the new M4E1 lower/upper. (Bought a cyber Monday special.) What type of build would it be most suitable for? ie: Better suited supporting a heavier barrel or a larger caliber? Help me, I've bought another lower, and I can't get an upper.

Listener Feedback…

Tyler Wiese -  Thoughts on 6.8SPC and Grendel. Things from range, huntability, bullet selection, reloading, and trusted barrel/bolt makers. Would also love a whole wildcats show, with as many calibers and info as you can get. Also thoughts on the AR10 platform’s 45 RAPTOR

Jason Kruse - I would like to hear your guys opinion and take on the NRA and how people are becoming so disappointed in that organization. Also are there any good alternatives. Also would like your take on the 7.62 X 39 round in the AR platform.

Joe Oliveira - Proper cleaning times and methods. When to or not use a borebrush.

Craig Valentine - I have a 14.5" BCM carbine length barrel. What weight buffer should I be running to help compensate for the barrel length? I also have a rifle length BCM that feels much different. I also Know it's a longer gas system. I'm just wondering if changing my buffer weight(currently a 4.3)would help. I am running a JP Enterprises carbine length polished silent spring with it (not the silent capture)Thanks guys!!
Robert Mate - I have a old(1945) browning A-5 12 gauge shotgun that is in rough condition but still functions fine it just looks bad. No pitting but definitely needs redone. It was kinda handed down to me from my wife's uncle who isn't with us anymore. I am wondering if I should have it cerakoted or just keep shooting it and keep it from getting worse or try to contact browning to see about a reblue and service

Brandon Dhondt - I'm in the parts buying phase of my first build, a .308 composed mostly of Aero Precision components. I'm looking for a good reliable adjustable gas block, more particularly in Stainless vs black. I'm leaning towards the JP adjustable block but am concerned if the adjustability while the handguard is on since the adjustment screw is on the side of the block.
Any input would be great as far as other companies to look into or experiences with the JP block.

Connor R. Hebdon - Same idea as Robert below. What are some good 80% lowers and/or jig sets. I have a 5D tactical jig and I made some Bear creek arsenal lowers (worked really well actually) and always looking for more options

Alex Stephenson - I'd love to hear you guys talk about M16-A1 and M16-A2 clones.

Robert Mate - 80% lowers worth the hassle or not?

Justin Hope - Adjustable gas blocks. Hydraulic buffers. Opinions?

Jason - Got a question for the old man... or anyone else out there. Looking for some good but inexpensive iron sights for the AR-15 and 10 platforms. Thanks all.

Feedback:

Chase J: I guess this is old news, but have you heard of RF85? Apparently Anderson rifles has a coating/metal treatment/voodoo enchantment that allows their rifle to function WITHOUT LUBRICATION. You clean the rifle with soap and water?!?!?!?
There's a video where they shoot 300 rounds through it, clean with dishwater, then shoot 4700 more rounds through it, clean it 'Anderson style' by tossing it in a creek, shake it off, and dump a 30 round mag. 5030 rounds.  Straight up Kentucky madness.
I've been listening to your podcast for about a year, just re listened to your 6 part build from scratch series. I understand everything now that I've familiarized myself with a Colt 6920, putting 150 rounds down range once or twice a month, cleaning after every other trip to the range just to familiarize myself with the parts. Came across this rf85 video while scouring the web for things ar related, the bug has me pretty bad, and my gf loves shooting the rifle as much as I do. However, I may reconsider building myself a new rifle, and pick up an OEM Anderson rifle I can customize.

But anyway, what are your thoughts on RF85, and if it's all that they say it is, why hasn't this revolutionized the industry? Who needs chrome nickel Teflon boron anything when there's rf85?

Who am I kidding, I'll still build one. I'm itchin. I'm kinda waiting for Faxon to produce 6.5 Grendel barrels and bolts. Every time I hear (nick?nate?) talk about their engineering I feel like Jesse Pinkman (YEAH!!! Science Bitch!!!)
Reed, you have the same effect. You're the Walter White to my black rifle disease. I know JD knows what I'm talkin’ about.

Thanks for the show. I'll keep listening and using affiliate links. Chiau

Sean: In California... would it work for people to acquire a 458 socom AR... that way they can keep all their 30 round magazines? (i think it'll hold what... 9 or 10? ) of course you'd have to have some decoy 10 orders... (not sure since they can't be "detachable"... just a thought... always thinking…

Brandon: Listening to Josh Waldron on some of the pre-election discussions, I was kind of shocked to hear some details about the age of the NRA lobby in Washington, and I felt like he appropriately nailed exactly what I've felt about the NRA for years. I've long felt the NRA is far too focused on a glory days image of a father and son hunting deer, and more or less ignores the modern younger shooter and their needs and wants. I received a renewal request in the mail with a questionnaire that was tailor made to fire up my aging relatives with phrases such as "those washington politicians", but it did little to move my needle as a Gen Y/Millennial modern sportsman.

I would be interested to hear a guest from the NRA on your show, ideally to discuss their stances and progress on more modern issues like NFA restrictions, and the protection of AR's and other semi auto rifle platforms for any use (not just hunting).

Craig: Are those 83 lowers you have 80% completed or are they 100% finished requiring a 4473 form filled out? If they're all 100% finished lower"s; has the ATF questioned why you have so many lowers? Personally, I would not want the ATF's attention.

Feedback:

Sean K.  Oh my gosh. You guys say "you know" "um" "so" more than any other podcast (apparently Sean has listened to all 150,000 of them). I thought there was a level of professionalism when I started listening to episode 172 (I thought I was supposed to be paid to be considered a professional) but that quickly left my thoughts when Reed started talking and said "you know" 10 times (exactly) in just a few minutes (exactly how many minutes is a few). It was almost to (too) difficult to listen to (dangling participle). All the great information you guys share is lost with the filler (apparently we used filler enough to drown out 77 minutes of a show) and "you know" crap thrown in.

Spencer:  Hey guys, great show as always... but I was hoping Reed would mention where he found an A1 rear sight assembly for his retro upper.

I have exactly the same upper/lower set from Brownells, and it never really occurred to me that this part would be a sticking point. Is it possible to use the A2 parts in an A1 upper? I know it wouldn’t be correct, but I could live with that in my build.

Also, for the listener who wanted a reasonably priced suppressor to use for home defense, they should check out the Griffin Spartan 3. Its MSRP is $550, and it’s available for under $500 most places, so the cost is reasonable.

More importantly, it’s a direct-thread device that is intended to be pinned and welded onto a 10.5” barrel to make a non-NFA 16” barrel length.

This gives you the absolute shortest suppressed system you can get without an SBR stamp, and Griffin makes excellent suppressors that routinely outperform other 5.56 cans (The Military Arms Channel did a great review showing this).

This is how I plan on building a dedicated home defense AR that won’t leave me permanently deaf if, God forbid, I ever have to use it.

Rob:  Hi, Just saw an interesting Outdoor Channel show (Shooting Gallery 5/23/16) on owning silencers. Guest Jeremy Mallette was from The Silencer Shop (Austin TX.) and covered how to one stop shop a silencer. Would love to have someone on from The Silencer Shop. Thanks

Feedback:

Kris Peacock:  My wife foolishly purchased me an iPod for Christmas. Within a couple of days, I discovered the FRN and I've now completed an 80% lower build in 300AAC. It's certainly not my dream gun, but with about 500 rounds through it, I have had only 1 misfire using strictly reloaded ammo with brass that I cut down and sized. I've jumped in with both feet and I'm quite happy with my new hobby. Thanks for a great podcast and such complete coverage of the AR platform. Without this podcast, I would not have had the confidence to buy a bunch of parts and start building what I lovingly refer to as my "sport utility rifle."

Craig:  What is the difference between New Frontier Armory 9mm Ar15 carbine verses Stag Arms 9mm AR15 carbine? I presume these shot standard 9mm pistol rounds?
