AR-15 Podcast 184 - Who Do You Trust?

Welcome to Episode #184 of the AR15 Podcast. On this episode we’re going to talk about how to figure out who you can trust when you want to buy that AR and not build it.

Main Topic:  Who Do You Trust?

The question of buying an AR boils down to “who do you trust?”

What makes a manufacturer trustworthy?

How long has the company been around

What is their reputation like

Do they manufacture or source

Do they create or borrow

Well lead and financially sound

Who are we talking about?

Who do we trust?

Shannon R:  Hi, Just wondering how a person can wrap $5000 in a JP Rifle?  Where does all the expense come in?  I am an 07/02 located in Mn, and just can't wrap my head around a $5k AR15....we machine billet uppers and lowers for the most part right now.  Can you shed some light on this?  Thanks

Jeff:  Hey Guys, Love your show,  just started listening and have been getting into guns over last year.  I live in San Diego so veto-gunmageddon hits home.  But since I'm in the Navy and technically an out of state Resident, I don't get to sign the petition or vote,  but the laws surely affect me.

I built one ar and bought two more.  Recently I finished two 80% lowers.   Since my very experienced buddy helped me build my first, I need a refresher.  Can u recommend a good book with photos that step by step build a basic ar15. I'm deploying and will have no internet for YouTube or other resources.   Just want a book to walk myself mentally through a few builds while deployed.  Thanks for all u do!!

VR,

Re: Golden Rod Dehumidifier

I wanted to follow up on this topic because there can be some confusion. A rod dehumidifier doesn't actually do any dehumidification in the sense of removing water from the air. The rod increases the air temperature in the safe and as a result reduces the relative humidity a couple points. Relative humidity (RH) is a gauge of how much water air at a given temperature can hold, warmer air can hold more water... So increasing the temperature a couple degrees lowers your RH by cheating the air temperature up and not removing water. In my opinion their only purpose is to prevent condensation when you open the door and room air flows in. This is enough for safes that are in well conditioned spaces and not exposed to a lot of humidity. If your safe/guns are exposed to a lot of humidity, use a desiccant device like Reed mentioned, I use one made by Eva-Dry. These devices will actually reduce the water content in your safe. Just because it says dehumidifier or professional on the box, doesn't mean it's true

Jim R - What's the pros and cons of stainless barrels?

John Richardson - I was going back through older podcasts and I just want to thank you for the "what are you going to do in the revolution" podcast. It was well done, had some great ideas, and put it on the line. I will say that if it ever comes time to hide or bury my guns, it is time to use them.

Casey - Adams Arms has a barrel that they list is 223/5.56 it is 14.5 inch is it able to shoot both rounds? How do I know which caliber this is chambered for.

TheGunnyRet - Gentlemen, I work in Saudi Arabia and your PODCAST keeps my sanity and helps me spend my hard earned money… Recently listening to the Suppressor broadcast, you have now convinced me to go forward with a purchase and also build a SBR or two to attach it to...The Show is Great with all of it information twists....being a retired Marine GySgt I appreciated Reed's passion for Iron Sights but also JD's for spending money on parts
I would like to know more about "The Other Calibers build" in the AR Platform...6.5 Grendel, 6.5 Creedmoore, 300 WM, 260 Rem, 270 Rem, 458 SOCOM, 375 SOCOM, 5.7, etc...
Also on the Home protection Podcast with the Red Dot at close Range if you move the Dot up your round moves down...if you move the Dot Down the Round Moves up...note this is in reference to CLOSE RANGE within that 15 ft or 5m range. Just like on the old "Iron" Front Sight Post on an AR "Screw it Down" Round goes up....it's all about the angles… Keep up the good work Great Show...OORAH!! Marine Corps...

Jeff - Hey guys, New to the podcast and trying to listen sequentially. I cannot find episode 1-10 on stitcher and it seems the iTunes thing is the same way. I enjoy the podcast, but as a noob who hasn't built a rifle yet, I'm hungry for the basics.. where in the hell are episodes 1-10 hiding? Under Reed's hello Kitty coffee mug? Go easy on me, I'm a recent convert from the good old dirty dirty Soviet bloc style rifles.
Reed, I heard someone's feedback that you are boring and I just wanted to say that your voice is impossibly smooth... In fact I think your new name should be Barret Magpulo (get it snowflake? Barry Manilow) five stars when I figure out howto get iTunes working.

Reed (yes, there are two of us) - Hey guys, Just found out about your podcast a few weeks ago and I've been listening to a lot of your old episodes while building my first AR-15.  The info you guys have provided has been really useful and interesting.
I recently came across an accessory I'd never seen or heard of before so32. I wanted to get your opinion on it.  Do any of you use a dehumidifier rod (or any other dehumidifier device) for your gun safe?  It had never occurred to me that something like this might be a good idea.  It's probably not a big deal for people who live out west, but in the southeast and where I live in eastern PA, the summers can get unbearably humid and I had never considered how that might affect my weapon in storage.  Do you guys think these would be a worthwhile purchase or is humidity not really a huge risk to you weapons if you're storing them indoors?
Thanks and keep up the good work,
P.S. As someone who served 4 years active duty as an infantryman with the 101st Airborne Division, I completely side with Reed when it comes to the topic of back up iron sights.  With my build, the BUIS were the first accessory I added before even considering what kind of glass I want to get.  In my opinion they are an absolute necessity.  Anyone who only uses optics on their rifle is setting themselves up for failure.

Guy - it seems like Aero does not have the 308 actively on their web site. Have you noticed that there are some disappointed comments on facebook about the company.  Thanks

Jason - Been listening to the AR-15 Podcast for about a year now. You have one of the best show that i believes represents the people who like the black rifle. I have learned a lot from you guys over the year which has inspired me to build four rifles and take a stronger stance on the 2nd amendment. thanks for all you do, Jason from the socialist state of California.

Mike - Thanks for addressing my question on the effect of shortening the barrel of the 223/5.56. It helped set in motion spending WAY too much time reading articles and charts, using ballistic calculators, and watching videos I probably won't remember two months from now. Ha
When I called it an "intermediate cartridge" I was referring to terminal ballistics, comparing it to e.g., a 9mm or 30-06, or its effectiveness on a fox or grizzly.
While a 10" barrel may not be the best bang for your buck, it's still better than a pistol caliber, or a baseball bat.
Keep up the good work.

Carl - Dang it! I'm addicted! One complete build, one in progress and thinking of a third and fourth. That'll make my fifth AR. I was cool for 34 years until I started listening to your Podcast. In 1982 I bought a Colt SP1 AR-15 and have quietly owned it until now. All is changed. Truthfully I don't see it stopping until I have at least five...
Carried M-16s and a GAU-5a (XM177) in the USAF so I know my black rifle...

Charlie - Umm, like, y'know....you guys have an outstanding podcast; notwithstanding the grammar nazis.
I've been listening for about a year, and your information and lessons learned have given me the confidence to make all sorts of AR mods and builds. Now, I'm embarking on a DMRish built from the ground up. So, your recent 'cast on preferred equipment was spot on.

Feedback:

Sean K.  Oh my gosh. You guys say "you know" "um" "so" more than any other podcast (apparently Sean has listened to all 150,000 of them). I thought there was a level of professionalism when I started listening to episode 172 (I thought I was supposed to be paid to be considered a professional) but that quickly left my thoughts when Reed started talking and said "you know" 10 times (exactly) in just a few minutes (exactly how many minutes is a few). It was almost to (too) difficult to listen to (dangling participle). All the great information you guys share is lost with the filler (apparently we used filler enough to drown out 77 minutes of a show) and "you know" crap thrown in.

Spencer:  Hey guys, great show as always... but I was hoping Reed would mention where he found an A1 rear sight assembly for his retro upper.

I have exactly the same upper/lower set from Brownells, and it never really occurred to me that this part would be a sticking point. Is it possible to use the A2 parts in an A1 upper? I know it wouldn’t be correct, but I could live with that in my build.

Also, for the listener who wanted a reasonably priced suppressor to use for home defense, they should check out the Griffin Spartan 3. Its MSRP is $550, and it’s available for under $500 most places, so the cost is reasonable.

More importantly, it’s a direct-thread device that is intended to be pinned and welded onto a 10.5” barrel to make a non-NFA 16” barrel length.

This gives you the absolute shortest suppressed system you can get without an SBR stamp, and Griffin makes excellent suppressors that routinely outperform other 5.56 cans (The Military Arms Channel did a great review showing this).

This is how I plan on building a dedicated home defense AR that won’t leave me permanently deaf if, God forbid, I ever have to use it.

Rob:  Hi, Just saw an interesting Outdoor Channel show (Shooting Gallery 5/23/16) on owning silencers. Guest Jeremy Mallette was from The Silencer Shop (Austin TX.) and covered how to one stop shop a silencer. Would love to have someone on from The Silencer Shop. Thanks

Sam G:‎  I'm interested, but new to the idea of buying an AR 15. Wanted one for quite some time. Just wondering what you guys would suggest for a gun that's extremely compatible with attachments, and isn’t going to drain my bank account.

Jeff S:  Here we go again. How expensive do you think everything is going to get.

Bryan C:  Reed… Use a front sight for a hood ornament.
Jim R:  Suppressors for home defense ar's. On a budget lol. Still looking for the perfect home defense gun. What sights or laser for home defense. Also, update us on the new regulations for getting tax stamps for an sbr. Trust or no trust. I have 3 daughters that I would have in a trust if I get one. Thanks. Love the show. You guys are awesome!
Mike C:  I have been listening for a few months now, catching up on the archived episodes as well. I am a trucker and I have a lot of time to listen. I have an issue with the apparent fascination with short barreled .223/5.56 rifles. I have an AK pistol in .223 just for fun, but I don't think further hampering an already intermediate cartridge by going shorter than 16-18" is a great option. Loss of velocity is a negative in my opinion. Thoughts?

DW Taylor:  A few months back I had asked about your thoughts on the 6.5 Grendel. I had listened to past episodes that had touched on it, but episode 162 went into great details on the topic. Thanks for the very informative episode. Looks like that will be my next build.

Just to let you know, it isn't cheap to listen to your show. Since listening to the various topics, I've now milled 7 80% lowers, built an AR15 chambered for the 7.62x39, built an AK47, bought a night vision scope, made sure all my builds have iron sights, and now you guys keep talking about the AR 15 in 9mm...

So, should I stop listening or just buy another gun safe?

Keith S:  Long time listener (my review was read on episode 11... proof I've been around awhile).  I've been thinking of a competition between the show hosts. Each one builds a rifle from scratch... within a given budget.  Say you have $900 to spend or $1000... each week the host share what part they bought and cost and why... my assumption is that say week 1 - it's lower receivers... week 2 - lower parts kit ... week 3.. stocks.. etc. so that everyone is talking about the same part.  In the end each gun is submitted to a neutral party (I'll gladly fly out to Reed's house for a weekend of shooting). The winner gets bragging rights and the 3 rifles are awarded as prizes in a drawing... first place gets the rifle that the neutral party feels is best.. 2nd gets the 2nd best and 3rd gets the last one.... or maybe the winner keeps his rifle and the others are awarded in a drawing.

The rules... no parts that you already have.... must be purchased and costs kept track of so we can. Any tools that would be required to be purchased don't count towards the cost (just assume you borrowed them from a friend). I have a few twists/tricks that could throw the game around but it would be fun for you guys (and if I got to be the neutral party fun for me... but fun for me just to listen to as well).  I assume some will put money for the build aside for a scope, Reed wouldn't and would iron sights on.. etc... would be fun.  Everyone would have their own strategy on the build.  Anyway, it's something I've been kicking around for awhile and hopefully you can get Jake or a sponsor to kick in the money for it.  Enjoying the show for more than 3 years, keep up the good work... and get more range time when you can.

Semper Fi, Keith
